Dear All
I’m off to the States at the end of the year on a J-1 work visa. So far, I’ve been offered a job at Mammoth Mountain ski resort. Has anyone skied/ boarded or worked there before? Any good?
I’m a beginner snowboarder and I’ve been told it’s great for snowboarding.

cant comment on CA
but skiiing (or in my case boarding) in the USA rocks
ive been a few times now and have an awesome time every time
the snow is more powdery and more frequent
less crowded (except on public holidays but thats a no brainer)
way longer runs
more varied runs
the list goes on
BTW i very jealous, youll have an awesome time im sure
by the time you get back you should be able to fully rip it on the mountain 8-)
Hey Sam,
I had a mate who went to Mammoth to work over Winter. Heard nothing but good reviews about his time there. He was an accomplished skier before he left but hadn't boarded before.
On returning, he's now a pretty good boarder too :)

A mate i worked with is one of the head instructors at Mammoth. From the video's i've seen they have some of the best snowboard facilities in the world. The free riding like most US mountains is great.
Go for it and enjoy man.

Fuck YEAH!!!!!
I spent a season at mammoth 2000-2001. It was the best fucking time of my life!! When we arrived mid dec, there was a base of 6 feet, and the locals were telling us how bad it was... I was thinking to myself if 6 foot is bad, come to buller and see what we put up with!! Anyway I worked as a prep chef in the Canyon Lodge Cafe, with a whole heap of the dirtiest mexicans you could ever meet... it was awesome!! The dirty sanchezes taught me how to make real mexican food, and the guacamole that we usewd to make there is the best guac i have tasted anywhere (even in mexico). I basically cooked french fries for 4 hours a day, and thus earned the nick name CHIP BITCH!! The mountain itself is so big that even if you ski/board pretty hard whenever you have a day off, you will still not see the entire mountain!! There are some really kick arse bowls and some mad terrain if you're willing to hike a little (dragons back/tail). I was caught in the middle of a white out whilst riding one day, and apparently it snowed 3 feet in 2 hours... man that was intense!! Being the stupid dickhead that i am, i decided to straight line it through the blizzard to a lower elevation where the vissibility would be better, what a disaster that was, i straightlined it into a cliff face, not very quickly mind you, because i had just gotten up from stacking previously... Anyway off the slopes the partying is full on. I don't think there was a night when i didn't polish off a case (half slab, 12 cans) of beer, the cheaper the better (thumbs up to Natural Ice)! Parties every night, down at the hot springs with kegs, at abandoned houses on NYE and then stealing kids push bikes infront of cops.... Man what a time!

Hey Sam I wen't to the states at the end of 97. I was with work USA and had a Job in the Main lodge caffaterria. The snow up there was amazing. I was there for 4months and I had a blast.
Get the Gondala to the summit and drop off the backside down to chairs 13 and 14 if I can recall it's the best powder runs. The snowboard park is awesome too. If you get a chance make your way over to June Mountain It's a short drive but trust me the snow there is so fluffy and soft it's mad.:tripping:

If its a powder day make sure you get up real early, I've never seen anywhere get tracked out so quickly as Mammoth.
Snowboard facilities there are some of the best in the world, 2 or 3 parks and 2 pipes, one of them a superpipe, and the freeriding is mad so really you can't lose. And the mountain lives up to the name, it's huge...
My only dig is that the snow is a bit wet being on the coast and all, compared to utah and colorado anyway, but if you haven't been to either of those then you won't know what your missing, so go for it!
