The original theme music is great - it still sounds kinda futuristic 40 years later which is no mean feat.
I remember reading somewhere about the sound of the Tardis arriving and departing - contrary to popular myth it's not the sound of an elephant in labour - it's a piano string being plucked and then played back at a slower speed - apologies if that disples any illusions ;)

How was that segment on Negus afterwards? I'm almost contemplating joining the Dr Who fanclub. Maybe I can score some mad paraphernalia
How about the first doctor's attitude..............he's rather eccentric really, and mad too. He basically kidnaps those two teachers and thus Dr Who begins...................................8-)

Dr foreman... Dr who?
pretty amazing when you think that Delia Derbyshire (BBC radiophonic workshop) made the theme sound like that using only primitive tone modules (they didn't have a synthesizer till after '65)
was nothing like the composer intended, but she doesn't even get a credit in the titles, just listed as 'bbc radiophonic workshop'
It's just a tad before kraftwerk ;)

oh my god. when they were exploring the city...the walls painted to look like the passageways continued to infinity...omg...so budget...love it!
as for the original (and BEST) theme (which is still in my head), i found this info about it...
One of the most popular cult TV shows ever produced was
the BBC's legendary "Doctor Who". The continuing
adventures of the enigmatic traveller in time and space
were seen around the world for nearly 30 years. A key
factor in the show's early success were the startlingly
original title sequence and theme tune - the first piece
of pure electronic music to truly enter the public's
psyche.
Composed by Ron Grainer, responsible for the slightly
less hi-tech Steptoe and Son and later The Prisoner, the
theme was electronically realised by Delia Derbyshire
and Dick Mills of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.
According to Derbyshire, Grainer popped into the studios
and scribbled a few notes and suggestions for the theme
before disappearing on holiday. Upon his return, the
composer was delighted with how the pair had interpreted
his ideas.
Synthesizers were still in the very early stages of
development at this point, the few that existed being
the size of a small house.
Most of the elements of the theme tune were recorded one
note at a time from primitive banks of oscillators,
noise generators and modulators before being spliced
together onto a final tape. Derbyshire and Mills were
way ahead of the studio trickery used on Sergeant
Pepper.

Just another indication of how ahead of its time Dr Who really was...Was anyone else startled by Susan's little spiel of the TARDIS' memory banks being a giant slab of computers??? Pretty futuristic lingo there considering the first real computers were still about 10-15 years off :-0
and also Dr Who had devised cloaking of sapce ships and craft long before start trek came about.
The tardis isn't really a phone box, it's cloaking device has made it to look like that when it hit earth so as not to stand out but has been broken and therfor stuck as a police phone box from now on.
We may finally see a dalek tonight aswell instead of it's toilet plunger pointing at susan :p

hmm first aired in '63 the 'first' computers are generally thought to be the one used by the Bletchley Park code breakers in ww2 & another one slightly earlier in australia (but of course we couldn't find a decent use for it so it went unrecognised)
so whilst the personal computer was a ways off, IBM was churning out tube driven monstrosities the size of small houses.

i am confused by the last two episodes.
from what i remember from when i was little i thought the daleks were machines, not a sentient species that congregated in groups to have conversations. are there creatures inside them, like the metal is an exoskeleton, or are they creatures actually made of metal? because that would be silly, a creature that can't climb stairs or traverse bumps, the laws of evolution would dictate they would never have developed on their jungly planet.
Due to the exreme radiation caused on thier planet by war both the Daleks and the Sau (i think that's what they are) have become mutated and grossly disfigured. therefor the daleks made machines for themselves to keep living in and working from until a cure for the radiation sickness and disfigurment can be found.
in short the Daleks are carbon based beings inside a "tank" sort of device for them to keep on living :)

Any true fan of the Doctor would know that there are little ugly guys inside the Dalek casings - they are not robots. No machine would have the bloodlust and will to take over the universe like the Daleks do. Can't you guys remember later on when the Doctor battles Davros - Supreme Leader of the Daleks.
Check out this link here (members.cox.net/nthdr/daleks/daleks_heirarchy.htm)...It goes on about Dalek hierarchy and which colours do what and so on. Suprisingly, I have no memory of 'specialised' Daleks with kick ass weapons or the ability to swim!!:-0

as we saw earlier in the week they are confined to the city because they need the floor to generate the static electricity that powers them.
the website SAP posted says that during the neutronic war the thals and daleks lost most of their technology, which is why the daleks don't have any on board power storage. sounds a little unrealistic to me...but hey...it's all part of the low budget hilarity ;)
it leads me to conclude two things about the spider daleks:
1. they're fanfiction, as i said earlier.
or
2. they're from a different time to the one in which these episodes are set.
again...just like t3, dr who and its concept of the physics time travel fucks with your head if you think about it too much. just accept it for the low budget schlock it is and enjoy it ;)

OMG
Doctor Who News 26 September 2003
New Doctor Who TV series
Doctor Who is coming back to BBC One in 2005. It will be a new live-action series, written by Russell T Davies.
Late last night we received the following surprise official statement from BBC Publicity:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lorraine Heggessey, Controller of BBC One, has confirmed that all rights issues regarding Doctor Who have been resolved and has green-lit scripts from writer Russell T Davies.
The statement notes that it is far too early in the day to discuss possible storylines, characters, villains or who might play the Doctor. It also states that it is unlikely anything will be on screen for at least two years.
It will be a family show, but no details are available on when it will be scheduled.
Doctor Who will be produced by BBC Wales in conjunction with Mal Young, Controller of BBC Continuing Series. The executive producers will be Mal Young, Russell T. Davies and Julie Gardner, Head of Drama BBC Wales. Russell T. Davies's writing credits include Bob and Rose, Queer as Folk, The Second Coming, Touching Evil (with Paul Abbott) and The Grand.
Mal Young says: "Doctor Who is a much-loved, truly iconic piece of television history. It's time to crank up the TARDIS and find out what lies in store for the Doctor. We're thrilled to have a writer of Russell's calibre to take us on this journey. However, we're at the very early stages of development and further details, including casting, will not be available for some time."
Award-winning writer Russell T. Davies says: "I grew up watching Doctor Who, hiding behind the sofa like so many others. Doctor Who is one of the BBC's most exciting and original characters. He's had a good rest and now it's time to bring him back!
"The new series will be fun, exciting, contemporary and scary. Although I'm only in the early stages of development, I'm aiming to write a full-blooded drama which embraces the Doctor Who heritage, at the same time as introducing the character to a modern audience."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A report in the Telegraph mentions that six episodes have been commissioned, but there is no information on this in the BBC statement.
A BBCi animated series starring Richard E Grant as the Doctor launches to celebrate the show's 40th anniversary. His adventures will keep you entertained while you're waiting for the new TV series to arrive.
We hope to have more news on this story later today.

A Beginner's Guide to the TARDIS
http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/doctorwho/tardiscam/intro.shtml
BROWNHORNET: your bitchslap has hit you in the face.... it is indeed a chameleon circuit. BBC says as much. peace.
What is a TARDIS?
The TARDIS is the Doctor's method of travel through both time and space - all Gallifreyan Time Lords use TARDISes for getting from A to B - and from then to now.
And TARDIS means?
TARDIS, of course, stands for Time And Relative Dimensions In Space. Or Time and Relative Dimension in Space, if you're a purist.
What's a police box?
The Doctor's rather unreliable type 40 TARDIS appears as a Police Box - but only because the chameleon circuit that allows the TARDIS to appear in any form got jammed on earth in 1963. Police boxes used to be everywhere - they contained emergency telephones for 'Bobbies' to use before the Police got walkie-talkies.
Dimensionally transcendental
Of course, the external dimensions don't bear very much resemblance to what's inside. The interior of the TARDIS occupies a separate set of dimensions to the exterior - so it's a lot bigger on the inside than the outside.
How does it travel?
How the TARDIS actually travels through space time is a mystery. It does appear as though the whole ship (both external and internal dimensions) move through the time vortex, allowing the TARDIS to cross time and space. Hence the TARDIS interior shaking when the exterior is attacked.
Can you break it?
The TARDIS is almost indestructible. If it was completely indestructible then life wouldn't be very interesting, but it does appear to be resilient to extermination, being plunged into black holes and falling off cliffs.
What's inside it?
Inside the TARDIS there are an awful lot of rooms - libraries, gardens, swimming pools, and even a cricket pavilion. Plus two control rooms, a boot cupboard, a very large costume wardrobe and a pink Zero Room.
Who came up with the idea?
The idea of the TARDIS was originally mooted by Verity Lambert - the Police Box exterior was invented by Anthony Coburn, writer of 'An Unearthly Child'. The console room was originally designed by Peter Brachacki , who worked on the show's pilot episodes.
Ask a Time Lord, though, and they'll tell you that Rassilon and Omega together worked on making time-travel and TARDISes possible through a mighty feat of temporal engineering. No-one give the BBC credit for anything, these days.
Do we love it?
Over the years, the TARDIS has entered the national consciousness. Although the word isn't in the dictionary yet, it often gets used to describe something deceptively big on the inside - or automatic public toilets! Most recent proof of it's enduring legacy is an artwork by respected contemporary artist Mark Wallinger, featuring two TARDIS replicas at the Museum of Natural History in Oxford.

Just to add a little bit about the KLF tune, the whole point of it was as an 'artistic' piss take by Drummond and Cauty, to prove the inherent stupidity of the record buying public. They wrote a book about it, the hard to find 'How to have a number one the easy way'.

in short the Daleks are carbon based beings inside a "tank" sort of device for them to keep on living :)
Davros made the daleks to win that war for the one side, from accelerating the mutations coming from the war
What the side Davros was on did not realise is that he was not interested in winning the war for them, but creating a new species, and at the end of ('vengeance on varos' i think) the daleks actually wipe out both cities
the doctor actually gets off a bomb, and 'sets back the dalek evolution for a bit, but does not wipe them out
oh, and i think that was the episode where he was sent there by the time lords when he was trapped on earth
they wanted him to stop the daleks, even though hey are supposed to respect the time lines

Yeah considering I started watching when I was like 4, and stopped maybe -6 years later, I can't remember all the intricate little bits that I'd like (although I was absolutely sure about the chameleon circuit thing - maybe you should have read my post before mouthing off Hornet ;) ). I'm thoroughly enjoying this replay of the series and I truly hope Spike's post is on the money and a new series goes through. There are so many quality Dr Who stories just waiting to be told :)

I never understood why the Daleks wanted to invade Earth.
I mean all the stairs we have here will scupper their plans for sure.
Patrick Troughton, the 2nd Doctor, once lived in a house in the street behind my fathers Aunts house. As a kid I used to play in her garden knowing that Dr Who's garden was just beyond the hedge. Something that I thought was very cool.
On the subject of the Tardis. What will happen in the new series? Police boxes are no longer seen anywhere in the UK, so it would stick out like a sore thumb. The Doctor would only avoid detection if he put down in a museum every time he landed. This might mean he wasn't spotted by the General Public, but it would make it very easy for his enemies to find him.

My post before was from the BBC sight. I was doing some reading and the reason that they never brought the series back was because the BBC wanted a lot of directorial control over the series and the independent productions crews who would have made it were unwilling to do that.
BBC must either have enough of their own money now or have just reached some agreement. It isn't coming back untill at least mid 2005 anyway guys so nothing to be terribly excited about now.

Well that's cos the chameleon circuits must have shat themselves in the 2nd/3rd episode!! It was news to me that they fucked up all the way back in the very beginning. But if I think about it carefully, there's a couple of episodes I remember involving The Master (the Doctors' childhood friend and arch-nemesis) and he had a later model TARDIS that was in perfect working order - so it took on a number of different shapes (I seem to remember a large pillar being one). I daresay that the chameleon circuits are an integral part of the ship - so I have no idea what form it would take if they weren't there :? :?
Well I hate dr who, but this bit of news will cheer you all up.....
