View Full Version : Redundancy - new job or travel?
OK so I have recently been made redundant. I had the choice to take the cash or an internal job and after seeing the amount of money on offer I took the cash :)
So what do I do now:? I know I could get a new job reasonably quickly with my experience, but a few people have said I should travel and I am also starting to think more about it as I have always wanted to travel South America (I'm 24). However I haven't got a clue about Spanish/Portugese and have never backpacked before so I'm a bit clueless.
What would you do? Get another job or drop everything and travel?
travel travel travel!
you can always get a job when you come back! :)

Travel!
No doubt about it.
drop everything and travel

Travel for sure
Most employer value life experience as well as work experience and you've got the rest of your life to work.
Please do it dude I have dreams about getting retrenched so I could do same!!!
Travel and be sure to pass on any of your gigs to me :P :)

It depends on what else you might want to use the money for as well. You could use it to set up your own business, re-train in a different job or put a deposit on a house.
If you don't want to do any of those things, and all you want to do is travel, then now's your big chance. But don't stuff around, get going or you'll eat into your travel money and you won't have done anything worthwhile with it.
lets see hmmm
GO GO GO GO GO GO GO
get a job over there...

Very old quote
No one on their death bed wishes they had spent more time at work.
Travel.

Travel wins by a looooong way
My work is going to merge with another company and I was so hoping I'd be retrenched and get given enough moolah to travel....but they didn't frickin fire me!!! How screwed is that?;)

TRAVEL!! It's a decision you'll never regret - even the bad times are learning experiences. Oh - and if you're asking the question "travel or work" then I believe your heart is telling you to travel. People who don't want to travel wouldn't be hesitating.

I'd say travel. If you got a fairly sizeable payout you're best taking some time off so you can keep your tax down (my dad had to take 2 months off when he got his redundency and he still paid shitloads in tax).
So yeah, if you can afford 3 or 4 weeks off then do some travelling.
have ur cake and eat it too, piss off all ur friends!
travel

travel
(work overseas)
its the biz 8-)

if its a bona fide redundancy the payout should be tax free.
but do what they said .. travel!

So true. I'd definitely travel but I would make sure I had enough money in the bank - I wouldn't recommend starting from zero at your new job again. You did all that work for a reason, don't squander it ALL away on travel :D
Travel!!!
Get on the first flight to Aus, it's amazing over there, backpackers haven!!!
Definately travel. This sorta sitch happened to me and im off to the Uk to work for a while. You dont have to put a time limit on it. Get an open ended ticket and you can come back when ever you want!
Take a tour if you are uncertain with things. then that way you can always go back to places you liked on your own! :)
Have fun!

eeep! careful abt statements of redundancy payouts being tax free ... they are not! they tax you at a higher rate if it puts you into a higher tax bracket and don't forget to check if they took superannuation acrual out as well ... I speak from bitter experience after receiving a nasty tax bill two years after a large redundancy payout ... I was taxed at the time but didn't know abt the super .... grrrr
as for the travel/work argument ... go travel ... you are young and most companies expect aussies to go on travel and life experience journies when they young ... just make sure you have some cash left to tide you over when you get back as getting a job is quite hard these days.
bon voyage you lucky bugger!
del :o)
I got made redundant in November & wasn't sure what to do either.
So... I got a casual job in a club so that I didn't spend all my redundancy $$ while I made my decision.
I have just accepted a job doing something quite different to my previous occupation & it's something that I'll be able to take around the world with me. I'm gonna stay in Oz till early 2005 & then do the travelling thing then (this was a plan of mine before I was made redundant).
It works well for me - I get to do both!
