am planning a road trip through wales in mid-late june but am looking for suggestions on where to go and what to see etc!

Am taking 3 days/ 3 nights, and looking to drive down from London to Bristol on the first night. Stay overnight in Bristol and then head across to Wales from there.

Am keen to see Swansea and Cardiff and perhaps Newport (home of the GLC!) but am definitely open to suggestions from those that have travelled there as to what to go and see and do.

So hit me with it!
(please).. :)

Got two suggestions for ya!

The gower peninsula, a little drive past Swansea, is probably the best coastal region of wales. It has some of the best surf in the uk, beautiful beaches ringed by high cliffs and unspoilt rugged countryside. It's a great place!

Also, it is alot further away, but the tiny village of Portmeirion is well worth a visit. Constructed in the 1920's by a bit of a loony called clough ellis, it is a strange place of italianate housing tumbling down a lush green valley towards the sea. Its unusual beauty has meant it was the main 'star' of the cult 60's sci-fi series 'Prisoner'. Definately worth a look!

yeah go to the gower peninsula, its pretty damm nice there, maybe go and see a castle, just dont wear a fleecy jacket or a woolly jumper when you're near the locals and whatever you do never ever say anyword remotely sounding like Baaaaaaaaa! in public;) . when in the south east make sure to go somewhere were you can hear the locals speaking, they have one of the most amazing accents.

Get up into the Brecon Beacons. Great scenery, hard slog to get to the top of the mountains tho.

Found 2 good places.

Metropolis

60 Charles Street, Cardiff, CF10 2GG
Week hours: Monday to Thursday 12-11pm
Weekend hours: Friday + Saturday 12pm to 2am
Telephone: 029 2034 4300

Ultra-stylish city centre design bar that’s popular with 20 to 30-something media types and professionals. Quality cocktails are powerful and perfectly prepared but dozens of vodkas drunk either as shots or with mixers are equally potent and popular. Cool background music plays as you sip your way through the menu, and the whole feel is one of laid back communal charm with more than the odd cat-walk model type distraction. Don’t be surprised to be chatted up by one of the local independent, single and liberated women who know a good thing when they see one. Food is almost as fine as the drinks.

Via Fossa

Mermaid Quay, Stuart Street, Cardiff, CF10 5BZ
Week hours: Monday to Friday 11am to 11pm;
Weekend hours: Saturday 11 to 11, Sunday 12 to 10.30
Telephone: 029 2045 0947

Beautiful new spot on Cardiff Bay with a glassy view of the water, although no-one’s yet spotted that mermaid. Very busy on weekends, especially when the sun is out, it’s more wine bar than ultra-trendy cocktail bar, although the older, laid-back smart set who come here do add a touch of glamour, style and sophistication to the surrounds. Young and sexy bar staff and waitresses are welcome additions to the eye candy.

Anyone know the best (quickest and cheapest) way to get from London to Wales?

I'm arriving in London on the 2.8.06 and departing for Sydney on the 7.8.06. I'd really like to check out Wales - it looks beautiful.

Can anyone recommend the best area to stay if I'm only going to stay for 3 nites? I'd like some nightlife and close to the township [edit: city, for L-A's benefit, i thought township sounded quaint] but also near somewhere scenic.

Near the township? You are aware Wales is a country, yes?

/me sends Meibion Glyndwr around to burn down your summer house.

Best Kayaking in the world IMO ... I did a 2 week retreat in Wales in 94 when I was 17.

Horse riding, trekking, & Kayaking.

Towns have weird names though, never try to pronounce them just write it down & show the locals and they will help.

You can get there pretty quickly on National Express (bus), particularly if you are just going to Cardiff. Some nice scenery, day trips, castles etc around there if your're pressed for time to get anywhere else.

Not sure about nightlife though, been a few years since I was there.

St Fagan's Welsh History Museum in Cwmbran is really good. It's set on a big block on parkland and it has many original buildings from 100s of years ago - it's really authentic and you get a great feel for the culture!

If you stay in Cardiff you will still be close to Swansea and other scenic places, and it's probably the only place in Wales for nightlife. Cardiff castle is pretty cool!
