View Full Version : Do we really need these additional forums ??
I certainly don't think so - bloody waste of time... tunes and tracks should stay were they are !!!
I mean if this is going to be the "norm" now maybe the "Funky Dirty Breaks" & "Uplifting Melodic House" threads should be directed to their correct forums ...
Why not widen the conversation regarding genre, instead of being confined to one thread.
Here people can post all questions and comments regarding breakbeat which should minimise confusion and opt for maximum readability... instead of syphoning through one massive thread of "yah" and "me too, got it yesterday" etc..

theres pros and cons. i liked having all styles under the one forum because while i dont buy house records i like to listen to it and know whats big which was easy with it all under the one banner. on the other hand its good to be able to ignore the genres which really dont interest me.
as for the funky dirty breaks thread, i think that thing was getting out of hand. this way we can view all the topics discussed in that one thread in our own forum.
i think its better this way

i dont think it was getting out of hand at all. i think its a great thread, for breaks lovers alike as we had the chance to find out all the latest breaks tunes and other info.
we have some of the best breaks nerds on ITM who constantly pump out new tunage suggestions (cough..sco77k, stalks, wowkaharmos, and others ;) )
keep it going i say!

agreed
I like house / hip hop / techno as well and dont want to have to search more forums just to see whats new ... I will probably be using ITM less and less now cause of it ...
this is what I posted in the "ASK ITM" forum ...
Don't like it either and it has nothing to do with change - its all about "2 Many Forums"
I mean the breaks enthusiasts just post on the "Funky Dirty Breaks" Thread and the trance heads post on the "uplifting melodic trance" thread - we keep our shit in there and out of the way, but now I have even more forums to search through...
Basically I use two forums only on inthemix (sometimes more if I want to go for a road trip to canberra / melbourne) Tunes & Tracks / Sydney Forum...
Moreso T&T because I get to find out all the info on loads of different genres - I dont just like breaks but don't want to have to search another 3-4 forums just to read up on the gossip et cetera ... Makes it a bitch at home for me as well since I still have not invested in ADSL ..
I say leave it as it was ... new forums are crap - just start threads (and make them sticky) that relate to each genre in the T&T forum .. much easier

Define need.
I think they are a good idea, a good way to get like minded people talking more about music. And not just the musical elite with a phd in musicology like there was in the tunes and tracks forums either. Plus there is more to music than tunes and tracks, there is artists and culture too.

I think it is clearer and less cluttered, plus, we do not have to associate with 'the others' when talking about the music we like.
I think its a great idea to break up the music thread into different genres.
After all its a music website and we all like certain styles.

it's really the sort of argument that's always going to have people polarised, but the fact of the matter is that inthemix continues to grow at a phenomenal rate, and we want to keep the growth of the forums in line with that of the rest of the site.
we've had over 140,000 unique visitors in may, our biggest month yet and a 115% increase on the same time last year (65,000).
there's no denying that we all like a variety of genres, but the intention behind starting up style specific forums is to encourage more specific discussions - the general tunes & tracks forum is still there...
there is more to music than tunes and tracks, there is artists and culture too
Good call.

I always found it a pain in the ass trawling through the T&T forum to find the shit I was interested in.
confining a whole genre (including artists & culture, as Oblivia pointed out) to a single thread with the title 'Funky Dirty Breaks' doesn't really do Breaks justice. IMO
no.
i mean i think its great that we might interact a little more with the flip sides.. how YOU doin?! but i think its just givin us more to try to keep up with,.. which is hard enough at the best of times.
Also splitting the genres in completely summer 99! its hard enough, epecially in perth to get the support massives we need.. the division of genres in threads may encourage further sepparation.. i think it will.

from mad mike to answer the question of wheter we need new forums....
Communities like ITM survive by adapting and specialising in different ways so that people don't get lost in the "growth". We already provide an array of forums that people feel "comfortable" in. Its their home turf, they know the other posters, they feel they have something to offer. Hopefully we can do the same by breaking up the music genres a little as well.
stalka - i agree with you. I don't think we need them and that it is doing more harm than good. But dont let that lead you to use ITM less. Tunes and Tracks is still there and is the place were you can still talk about music in general. Especially that new staff that isn't so easilly categories into one of 5 simple holes.
Unfortunately now a hell of a lot more people will be missing out on exposure to other styles they may not have in the past... but on the upside T&T was starting to get very trancey, perhaps now it will return to a forum of open minded posters who want to find out about the best in every genre.
This is a bit of a strange move though. as the Scene (in sydney anyway) seems to be moving away from segragation by genres - I mean look at big parties like 360/ winter break having various styles in one big room and big house clubs like kink having breaks nights in the main room + all the smaller guys pushing a variety of sounds at the one night.... for ITM to split the forums by genres seems to be going against the flow IMHO.
I know if I was new to ITM and I saw 24 forums I wouldn't even bother. When ITM split the forums originally I was against that too, but was proven wrong. However it seems each time you add more forums you lose a lot of charachter from each. All the personalities get diluted and you dont really get to know anyone as well as you do if there is only a few forums, and that leads to more hostility between posters with differing opinionis.
Any long live ITM in whatever form it is in. major change is never accepted very well around here and I know this was done for a bigger reason and with a bigger vision than most of us realise.
I still love you ITM, but I aint sleeping in your wet patch.
See you in the T&T forum :)

I was actually undecided if we needed these extra channels. But now I can see the threads are more specific about the music we all enjoy. Hopefully it will help us find more of what were looking for ;)
It would be great to see more internationals using these forums as an avenue for good feedback and discussion. ITM is spreading its tentacles slowly overseas (look at some of the personalities we have posting nationally and internationally). And supposedly breaks is bigger in aus per capita than in Europe so there is no reason why these channels cant grow into the interntaionl spotlight.
Build it and they will come (and old proverb that you could never rely on in an internet business!) But maybe these channels will find the niche market they are looking for :)

I'm with you. This is my first look around, and I really can't be bothered doing it again. I'm going to stick to Tunes & Tracks - there's only about 30 regular users of forums relating to music on ITM anyway, and I want as much varied discussion as possible.
Maybe they should expand the General and Lifestyle forums instead? You know, like "Trying To Shag Someone Off ITM", "Drug Stories", "Rude Jokes", "Photos Of People Gurning", "Arguments", "Shoes", "Movies About Cats", "Movies About Zombies", "Movies About Men In Suits Looking Serious", etc.

haha nice to see everyones reaction :P
but where would: Movies About Men In Suits Looking Serious & Talking to Cats & Zombies come into it ... maybe in the breaks forum eh :P

i reckon its crappy... i ask myself why would i want to navigate to multiple forums when before i could just do it all in one.
RA ;D ;D did it but they have no where near as many forums as you guys nor do they do posters.
ITM is just becoming like Maccas... we ll all get fat and obese because it ll take us longer to read these forums... 20 years down the track dre will be hearing from our lawyers who will be contacting him with lawsuits regarding the expansion of these forums leading to our poor mental and physical health :P
i'll still probably read it though.. :)
