I don't see why you would deny yourself a delicious tortilla.

The occasional green banana thrown into a smoothie is as far as I'll go for that cause. I don't really buy into the whole resistant starch supplementation thing. It seems unnatural.

FYP.

There's nothing quite like the smell of ammonia on your running clothes when you're only burning protein byproducts as fuel

I had to intervene. I managed to get the lamb and beef out of the BBQ before they hit 70°C internal, goddam rookie. The chooks are an abortion. Hopefully with a good rest the red meat will be edible

I was talking to an aboriginal elder yesterday at work who regaled me with tales of hunting Cape Barren Geese and what fantastic eating they were. Then he waxed lyrical about the utter unique and exquisite taste of Short-tailed Shearwaters... Mutton Birds to most; Moon Birds to his mob. One of the funniest chats I've had for a while and really very interesting.

Used to go mutton birding when I was a young lad.

Fuck the smell foul when cooking.

He's from the Derwent River somewhere. Also told me the pitfalls of not skinning a rabbit properly.

Back in Vanuatu we used kill, pluck and prepare the chicken ourselves whenever it was for dinner.

The smell of dunking the whole feathered chicken in boiling water was quite fowl.

KingWicked 19-Aug-14 09:50pm

Question. In 5/3/1 you have four lifts and four patterns (including deload). I'm using the Big Lift app but it doesn't advise of any calendar or schedule. How do they get split up?

jdoodle 19-Aug-14 09:57pm

do you mean over how many days in a week?

KingWicked 19-Aug-14 10:00pm

Have you read the book? And what do you mean by pattern?

You choose how many days per week based on your own time

If it's 4 days, do one lift per day, 2 days = 2 lifts per session etc

KingWicked 19-Aug-14 10:17pm

Rhetorical Questions by ITM's Brad?

E: made a bit more sense before your edit :(

KingWicked 19-Aug-14 10:19pm

Cool, thank you. By pattern I mean the 5x5, 3x3, 5/3/1 and deload.

little_brad 19-Aug-14 10:35pm

I personally think it's better to use a spreadsheet (heaps out there on the net)and that way it not only visualises it better but you can look back on months of progress as a record

I just take a photo of the week I'm on with my phone so I have it handy then record results after the session

Or use the big lifts pro app, and record them on a notepad app. EZ

Week 1
Day 1: Squat 5x65%, 5x75%, 5+x85%
Day 2: Bench 5x65%, 5x75%, 5+x85%
Day 3: Deadlift 5x65%, 5x75%, 5+x85%
Day 4: Press 5x65%, 5x75%, 5+x85%

Week 2
Day 1: Squat 3x70%, 3x80%, 3+x90%
Day 2: Bench 3x70%, 3x80%, 3+x90%
Day 3: Deadlift 3x70%, 3x80%, 3+x90%
Day 4: Press 3x70%, 3x80%, 3+x90%

Week 3
Day 1: Squat 5x75%, 3x85%, 1+x95%
Day 2: Bench 5x75%, 3x85%, 1+x95%
Day 3: Deadlift 5x75%, 3x85%, 1+x95%
Day 4: Press 5x75%, 3x85%, 1+x95%

Week 4
Day 1: Squat 5x40%, 5x50%, 5x60%
Day 2: Bench 5x40%, 5x50%, 5x60%
Day 3: Deadlift 5x40%, 5x50%, 5x60%
Day 4: Squat 5x40%, 5x50%, 5x60%

5+ = do at LEAST 5 reps, stop BEFORE failure.

That's just the main set, I highly recommend reading the motherfucking book because there's a whole heap of accessory shit that you should be doing after the main sets as well. For example, First Set Last & Joker sets.

One method of First Set Last is taking the first main set you did, for example, in week 2 that would be @ 70%, and do 3x5 at this weight.

Joker sets is taking the last main set you did and add +5%. Then keep adding 5% but if you don't know if you can get the wait, don't do it. Again, using in week two as an example, you'd do 3x95% then 3x100% etc. Do NOT go to failure. If you know you can't lift it, don't do it.

avatar_karma 19-Aug-14 11:23pm

This is what a full workout would look like:

Week 1, Day 1 (Squats)
Main sets: 5x65%, 5x75%, 5+x85% (imagine you got 10 on this last main set, you can obviously get 5@90%, so do some joker sets)
Joker sets: 5x90%, 5x95% (remember, we add 5% each time, if we don't know if we can get it, don't try)
First Set Last sets: 3x5x65% (they're pretty much drop sets to get more volume in)

Then do some accessory stuff for squats, like lunges or some shit. Then walk out of the gym like a fucking boss because you managed to do a proper squat workout. :thumb:

little_brad 21-Aug-14 02:21pm

KingWicked 21-Aug-14 08:55pm

Thanks Brad and A_K! I would be doing two days a week so I'll work it around that; maybe squats and bench, then deads and press. I just need to work out how and when I'm going to do it so a spreadsheet sounds like a good idea couple with the weights and advice from the big lifts app. Not sure how I'm going to fit it in so that may take some juggling. Mornings are out as I take one of the dogs for a 50 minute walk before work. I cycle to work twice a week (45mins each way); do 45mins of clinical pilates once a week and like to get a swim in somewhere in the week too.

Being banned isn't proof enough? Gallen will still get to play the majority of the 4 Nations, so what are you worried about? He's a representative specialist, remember? Also this way you get to farewell him properly next year, hopefully he can play out the entire season for a change.

Astro-Boy 27-Aug-14 07:09am

Shit's expensive to buy by the trailerload, yo.

airconteka 27-Aug-14 07:12am

So instead of burning cubby houses you can purchase wood? Interesting.

Head over to his page and follow his progress. He is one tough man!
John is off and running!! 140km to go"

You couldn't do that, Glenn. No way.

I had a few beers at the time but his bedside light caught on fire and by the time I got to his room the flames were 3/4 to the ceiling, was pretty full on, was living in a Queenslander so lucky the wall didnt catch fire. Don't call me a hero though, I was just doing what anyone would do.

Wooo, just registered for 12k City2Surf, haven't run 12k before but I have done a fair few 10ks,

What's the general etiquette? I hate people in general so I am hoping to not talk to anyone and put my headphones in / listen to hip hop for the whole race, is this rude?

Also I have 3 days to prepare, ran a 10k the other day, thinking of running today, then resting up

Nah plenty of people run with headphones. Just make sure you leave room for people to be able to pass you from behind if they need to as you won;t be able to hear them.

Yeah, just keep left or over to one side a bit so people can run past you if they want to. Though its usually people who're running with their mates who're the worst to try to pass because they insist on running 2 or 3 abreast.

Current plan is kayaking in Alaska in July/August next year with a stop off in Napa Valley & Yosemite.

Only spending a couple of days there.

Pro-tip from not doing it ourselves: book your accommodation in Yosemite (The Ahwahnee/Yosemite Lodge at the Falls) at least 3 months out. Otherwise you'll end up booking in somewhere which is 1hr drive away like Tenaya Lodge.

I've got a tentative plan for in a year or so to fly to LA, rent a big-ass American bike (Harley, Victory or Indian) and ride it to Vegas via Death Valley, do the Grand Canyon, up to Yosemite, out to San Fran and back down to LA. How long do you reckon I'd want to allow to have done decent time to see the sights in each place? Bear in mind Vegas itself doesn't interest me much so one night there is plenty.

don't worry aircon, perth is fucked now also, can't even really go to the beach. 5 meter sharks can gtfo. Right near the beach.

No body got time for dat.

Only good thing in perth.

Now we have nothing.

Yeah it's a real shame. Everyone is seeing more. I have a few mates who dives for Abalone, lots who fish, and shark citings have gone through the roof.

I am going out on Sunday though after City2Surf, even though that is the 5 mins from where the shark got spotted, fuck running a race that finishes at the beach, on a HOT DAY, with OFFSHORE winds and a little swell and not going out !!

I'm on my phone, so will wait until I'm on a computer to give a full answer. I was in Yosemite for 2 weeks and barely scratched the surface. There's the valley, of course, which is huge - but there's also Tuolumne Meadows up above at about 10,000 feet. I'd recommend September or so, as Death Valley in particular would be heinous in Summer. If you want to do some day walks, I'd spend the best part of a week in Yosemite valley, and maybe scope out Tuolumne on the way to Mammoth Lakes and Death Valley. Let me know before you go amd I can send you the info on hot springs in the area.

I think Death Valley is like 2 days, absolute maximum. The Grand Canyon would be a bit longer.

I'd also think about going to Joshua Tree if you're in that part of the world.

The ride between LA and San Fran will blow your mind. It might even be worth your while going nirth into Oregon and checking out Portland (beer!) and the dunes, if you have time.

Fwiw, I was in Vegas by myself without a tonne of money to spend and I found it thoroughly underwhelming. Not really my scene though, so take from that what you will.

I don't know if that's helpful, probably not. It will be an amazing trip though!

WalterBrown 01-Sep-14 03:10am

ahh i feel like such a loser. I stayed at work and had staff drinks, as usual we kicked on somewhere, then as usual since I have something wrong in my head, I was the last one drinking ,

so slept through my alarms and missed the race :(

really dissappointed in myself, but i only have myself to blame,

just wish I had more confidence so i didn't have to drink, pretty pathetic really!

gotamangina 01-Sep-14 06:48am

Drinking the night before a race you care about is retarded, even in moderation.

'Sallrite peaks, I got retarded drunk and wasted tons of cash on Friday then acheived fuck all of any use all weekend, mind you I hadn't committed to run in any races or anything either.

Isn't getting half cut before C2S pretty much compulsory though? I definitely remember doing it the year before last, can't remember if I did last year or not but I went better the first time anyway.

The drive from SF to LA can be done in 2 days however there are some nice spots worth checking out along the way.

2-3 days in SF to check it all out then drive the 2hrs to Santa Cruz for 2 nights. I don't think Carmel or Monteray is really your thing so maybe 4-5hr drive to Santa Barbara for a night is better. Then its only a 2hr drive back to LA but you can stop and check out Santa Monica & Malibu on the way.

LA itself is shit. You can check out Hollywood in a day. Downtown LA is the pits, avoid. Spend at least a day in Santa Monica checking out Venice beach etc. Then maybe another day if you want to go riding to Newport or whatever. I'd highly recommend adding another few days to check out San Diego. I've never been to Tijuana but if you're right there in San Diego... why not?

Vegas not being your thing I'd still give yourself 2 nights there, there is so much more to it than just gambling. You'll want to hit a gun range there and shoot some machine guns, trust me.

You can do Yosemite in a day if you stick to the shorter trails, but you'll want to stay near by so its a short drive in and out leaving you more time to spend walking.

If you were going to do a round trip you might want to try and get to Lake Tahoe and Sacramento but I've never been to either so can't really comment.

You could obviously shorten or lengthen your trip but I'd say you'd want at least 2 weeks to do what you described, 3-4 if you wanted to do it all at a leisurely pace so your'e not riding 8hours a day between destinations.

No idea if that helps but if you've got any questions or want to chat further just grab me on fb.

I did the exact same trip last year and agree with pretty much all of the above -- a few quick points from my perspective:

We did the SF to LA drive via the Napa Valley. If you're a wine drinker you'll definitely want to consider spending a few days there (we spent a week). The scenery is amazing, the wine great it will take days to get through tasting at just the bigger wineries, let alone all the niche ones. There's also the Sonoma Raceway, 6 Flags, volcanic hot springs, more golf courses than you could ever play and and a lot of museums nearby for some non-wine detours.

Even if gambling isn't your thing, I have a feeling that if you left Vegas after 2 days you'd be thinking you should have allocated more time. There is so much to do there that isn't gambling related: dozens of shows or concerts every night, the best outlet shopping in the world (imo -- I spend more than two days on outlet shopping in Vegas alone), gun ranges, canyon/hoover dam tours, pool parties, clubbing, strip clubs, food, buffets, more booze in more places than you'll ever have seen before...

San Fran is nice but there's only so much to do *without* planning in advance. You won't get anywhere near Alcatraz unless you book well in advance. It takes a few hours to get on a cable car if the weather is good and pretty much a big bus tour shows you everything else you need to see. There are lots of great cafes, galleries, museums and places to eat but you'll really want to pre-plan your movements or you'll be running out of things to do on the 2nd day.

Agreed, LA is really not a tourist place. We based ourselves in Santa Monica and hired a car to get around and see all that we wanted. Half a day in Hollywood is all you need. Chinese Theater, a few stars, a few shops, scram. Downtown is even worse. Santa Monica itself is lovely and you'll be glad to get back there after spending time anywhere else in LA.

Yosemite is on my bucket list still, couldn't get near the place due to the bushfires there last year. Next time!
