SYDNEY DJ Mix Thread 2.0

Let's try this again..

This thread is for Sydney people, to post up their own mixes, and perhaps even help some up & comers gain a local Sydney audience..

The same guidelines apply as the original thread:

1. You don't need to be a DJ. Just post up a selection of some cool tracks. You don't need to mix it in a DJ sense, Just do what you can, and post up a collection of some great music - give it a shot!

2. Design up a cover and a tracklisting. Put a little bit of effort into the presentation. You don't need to be a graphic designer, just give it a shot - It gives the mix some character.

3. GO DEEP! Make this a chance to play some DEEP or OBSCURE music in your collection, instead of the latest dance releases.
I'm sure most people will post up heaps of House / Electro / Breaks mixtapes - Why not make them a little challenging: Play an old record from 10 years ago - or give your mixtape a theme - Drop in some old samples or vocal bits from movies - or play an old rock song or whatever. It's up to you, but it would be great to hear the depth of everyones musical tastes.

4. Upload them up via yousendit, rapid share or those other fandangled file sharing sites, and post the link here

Was feeling the most uninspired i've ever felt in my life last weekend. Was playing The Cure and the lyric "breathing like the drowning man" voiced my feelings exactely. Decided to make a mixtape with a general theme of the struggle to keep one's dream afloat. If that sounds interesting to you, then click here :)

I don't think that's really the point of this thread. It's a thread about DJs getting a chance to be creative and show sides of themselves they don't get to show to others. Frenzie has an appreciation and understanding of music that goes well beyond that of many average generic DJs, and in his initial "mixtape" thread (and I'm sure this one), the point wasn't just to chuck together your latest demo of Beatport Top 10 bombs, it was to try something different.

Just use Paint or something similar. You don't need mad skillz to be able to do it - how do you create cover art for demo's you send to prospective promoters?

This is something I did in paint in 5 seconds, I used a photo from ITM galleries and inverted the colors and cropped the dj's head out... If this can be done in 5 seconds, imagine what you can do with a bit of thought (original image here: http://www.inthemix.com.au/photos28/.../aao.sized.jpg)

Maybe make a collage of photos of you and your mates partying.... 100 small images that make up a cool "album cover"

Ps: Marquis - if you still visit these forums, I'd like to see another mix from you as it would fit nicely in here... I still give the one you gave me at Dirty Donkey a regular spin

Have downloaded pretty much all these mixes and listened to them! Totally vibing the following:

Brut 33 - Forbidden Fruit
I'm yet to get to a Paradise Lost, but after hearing this, I'm totally keen.

Frenzie - Tonic
Such a nice, laidback groove throughout. Was listening to it while sitting outside in the sun today and couldn't stop grinning.

Neil UPP - Acid Mix
A man after my own heart. I ADORE acid house. Prob my fav mix I've downloaded all year.

Nonamaka - August Mix
Dark, rolling, minimal techno. In a market flooded with shit, generic pseudo "techno", this is the perfect example of what you can come up with when you put some thought in to your purchases and actually make an effort to dig a little beyond the top ten of the techno section on Beatport.

Magda - Speakeasy Promo
I've always liked Magda's tune selection and this is no exception. "Slow burner" is the perfect description, the kinda mix you can put on and just let it melt away part of your day.

Stu Kelly - Cranky Pants
I love deep house.

Daniel Stubbs - Fresh Meat Mix
Daniel is one of my favourite DJs and I always eagerly await his mixes. This is just another example of why he's fucking fantastic.

Stay tuned (like...an hour or so) for my contribution!

Wowk 18-Aug-09 12:05am

Okay, I have completed said mixtape I alluded to earlier! Here's an essay length post about it...

Andrew Wowk: Midnight In The Darkest Corners of My Mind

Essentially, this mixtape is a musical exploration of my darker side...it's all those tracks that appeal to the part of me that isn't about sunshine and lollipops. It incorporates influences from a number of genres, including trip-hop, industrial, drum & bass, dubstep, drone, and more. It's not a DJ mix, and it's not a dancefloor mix, it's a conceptual exploration of my interpretation of the word "dark" using my collection of music.

People will notice two things in this mix: distortion and a fair amount of Nine Inch Nails. The distortion I assure you is part of a lot of the tracks, so don't be concerned your speakers/headphones are fucked. The Nine Inch Nails...well...I just really, really like Trent Reznor. However, my inclusions of NIN tracks have tended to be ones I think aren't overplayed or "anthems" by any stretch of the imagination (and there's a couple of remixes in there too).

I've probably taken the "mixtape" idea to the extreme, because, really, there's practically no DJ mixing in here at all...there's like one transition where I manage to actually beatmix, but mostly it's stop/start or stuff where outros/intros mix together...there's just too much erratic shit going on in a lot of these tracks and bpm wise they are widely different in a lot of cases (and I'll happily admit I am not a turntablist so scratching/other trickery to mix the tunes together were out of the question). Plus there's even some mixing mistakes in there (eg cueing a track with the fader up by mistake and one or two bits of erratic levels throughout), but I decided to leave the mistakes in there, because this mixtape was never meant to be me showing off my technical skills.

It's two hours long, which I know is long, but, I struggled to really get the sort of breadth I wanted to get and programming I wanted to achieve with anything shorter, so I hope you enjoy the whole length of it!

Havik, to this day your 'Stiff Drink' & "It's Cold up in here' remain as top 5 listens on my ipod. Nice smooth music. First introduced me to Believer by Randolph 'Jazzanova Remix', awesome song. Will download new one once home.
Cheers

[quote=Wowk]Have downloaded pretty much all these mixes and listened to them! Totally vibing the following:

Nonamaka - August Mix
Dark, rolling, minimal techno. In a market flooded with shit, generic pseudo "techno", this is the perfect example of what you can come up with when you put some thought in to your purchases and actually make an effort to dig a little beyond the top ten of the techno section on Beatport.)

Thankyou for taking the time and effort to listen mate i do appreciate it. I will do the same for your mix which im downloading now, radical tracklist it should be a treat. :thumb:

cheers.
