What's happening / Why is the site broken / WTF is a Junkee

First a quick history lesson. ITM was founded in 2000 by Andre Lackmann, Libby Clark, and Neil Ackland. Something of a pet project initially, over the years that followed, every facet of ITM (news/reviews/events/forums) grew together into something great.

In the late 00's, ITM expanded beyond dance music into sister sites FasterLouder, Mess&Noise, and SameSame. The parent company (formerly inthemix dot net) became The Sound Alliance. In this time, great investment was put into dragging the family of sites into the social media age. Forum posters from back then will probably remember this best as the controversial ITM 2.0 redesign. Whether or not the outcome of that was successful, there was no question that wherever TSA went, Drey wanted the communities to come with it.

Following this, the ITM forums peaked and then pointed into a gentle decline. At some point both Drey and Libby moved on to other ventures. TSA broadened its horizons further with new sites AWOL (travel) and Junkee (sorta Buzzfeedy). Then in June of this year, The Sound Alliance rebranded as Junkee Media, cementing their new direction.

Here's what the current front page of ITM looks like. You can access the other Junkee sites by clicking "More Junkee Channels" at top right. http://inthemix.junkee.com/

Unfortunately, this business direction does not involve forum communities in the way ITM/TSA used to. Indeed, in my communication with Junkee HQ in the past two years as we (powerless mods) have tried to fix things, the message has clearly been that they would do what was needed to allow us to keep existing - but there would be no investment in the community beyond that. Truth be told, I'd have been happy enough with that, as long as we had a fully functioning site, and the appropriate access to manage it. Unfortunately we still don't have that, and we seem to slip further from it each month. Now I struggle to contact them at all.

In the past few months:
  • SameSame has been sold to another company
  • The FasterLouder forum has been shut down and removed completely
  • Mess&Noise seems to have received an upgrade to their forum software along the lines of the one planned for ITM. Theirs sits half finished, and they have seen a mass exodus of users.
  • ITM has seen a disconnection from the main site (no more embedded articles etc) which is a logical step to a software upgrade, because there is lots of old custom code that needs to be retired first. But many things are broken, have been for a couple of weeks, and no communication about any of this has been forthcoming.

This is all I know. There is absolutely nothing we can do. And while I've been hopeful and optimistic for the longest time, it's going to take a miracle to come back from this. Some say we're the last sad idiots hanging on to this place, but dammit man... an online community is a community. Some of us have been here for over ten years, and in that time lots of magic has happened, extending into real life friendships and more. And it's all at death's door, in the name of a new business model.

I'm not throwing the towel in just yet. There is a still a core group of rotters here that I like talking to, and as long as the bar is open I'll pull up a stool. I wish I had some sliver of hope to offer though.

UPDATE:

I have heard from HQ. The migration to new software & hosting is still happening, but not smoothly.

Still struggling over here with the vbulletin migration. Their engineers are pretty flat out refusing to migrate over due to sheer size of the data. I'm looking at potentially archiving and only bringing across the active forums (active = activity in the last 6 months).

ps. RWS made a script that cleans up the forum display. Requires a browser extension to handle scripts. Pick one of these:

firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/fir.../greasemonkey/
chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/d...jmpbldmpobfkfo

Then go here and install:

M_adz 21-Nov-15 11:29pm

It's been quite a while (lol) since my last post...but it's really really sad to read and hear about this. So much of who I am & what I've done in my life (yes #Mickstah et al I'm looking at you) is thanks to the ITM community. Tonight I sat around a table of friends all of whom are ex-timers (becy, swishfish, funkedub)...people I would never have known if it wasn't for this forum. and that's just my experience right now...

I know important & precious this crew is to so many of you & it a devastating to hear its getting shafted. This community has been integral to the success of inthemix over the years and its shameful that it isn't given the recognition it absolutely deserves. I hope that you find a space to continue the legacy (& I'm sure you will)...

Peace Out x

Hal Jordan 22-Nov-15 02:11am

Yeah I was on this forum before we even had to register. First as N2 and that was probably very early in 2000, actually I thought it was before 2000. Then Flying747, then a bunch of names the sequence of which I can't really remember.

I have met many friends on this forum, promoted parties and who knows what else. It's sad but it is what it is and change is inevitable.

For what it's worth this new business model will fail.

M_adz 22-Nov-15 07:45am

Yep, you're right - change is inevitable & there are some pretty innovative & creative peeps on here so it will be cool to see what's next

From what I gathered last night, you're not posting here because you've posted a small novel on Twitter.

Fair enough, well I was already too old even when ITM started.

Mickstah 23-Nov-15 12:11pm

Awesome write-up Gruso, really nice :thumb:
Junkee seem to have done all they can to delete their history and the story of how they got to where they are today which I find odd. They've had hugely dedicated communities following them for the better-half of ~15 years. You'd think that would be something to be proud of?
But apparently building a buzzfeed clone and getting a couple of awards for that is more important.

Anyway, ITM has given me countless friends and great times over many many years, in many locations around the country and the world. Like Madz said (random post out of nowhere!), I wouldn't be who I am today without ITM.

If you ask me the site just looks like someone's blog now. Did they win an award for that completely derivative design? Fascinating.

Also my blocker completely breaks the new menu system.

primalstatik 23-Nov-15 08:46pm

It is a massive shame to see this forum go to the wolves. Much like everyone else I have made lifelong friends IRL from this place. I am hopeful for a recovery if the software switch happens but it is looking pretty grim.

DTrancer 23-Nov-15 08:48pm

When ITM articles started pushing clickbaity mainstream articles, bagging the shit out of them during work tea breaks was my fav pasttime. Now junkee has managed to make this place more confusing than attempting to navigate pinterest on 'shrooms. I think this junkee betch needs to be banned for the world to be a better place.

Srs though, if this forum is going the way of $2 shops is it possible to pack this whole thing up and teleport it to a new, independant, forum of its own or slide it in as a subreddit? Any way to keep this community together so we can continue our smack talks about daft punk, paris hilton, and dj top 100 poll results.

NismoR31 23-Nov-15 09:48pm

we do already have a backup dental plan active here https://www.reddit.com/r/inthemix/

Gruso 23-Nov-15 10:09pm

You get mod, he gets mod, everyone gets mod!

We (GCP&G nerds) have also been discussing another forum. Reddit is no replacement for a forum, but most people are on there these days. We've got peeps who could set up a new forum easily (with some sick old school ITM theming) but then someone has to maintain the code, pay for hosting etc. And we wouldn't be able to take the ITM database with us.

So, still sitting here hand-wringing. But do drop into /r/inthemix. Hopefully we can ITMify it somewhat.

liberabit 24-Nov-15 10:01am

just think, back at the start of ITM there was no facebook, and electronic music was still 'underground'

it's a brave and scary new world out there now, but like others I'm glad I got to experience this and the friends I've made.

but my thoughts on getting a reddit account are best explained by Abe...

crabman 24-Nov-15 11:06am

Yeah, reddit is fucked.

Funkedub 24-Nov-15 11:19am

Don't let Reddit confound you.

Use RES, subscribe to things that interest you, remove those that don't. Filter by new etc etc.

Opening up the default front page of reddit ain't gonna give much joy.

DTrancer 24-Nov-15 12:41pm

Unless its a monday and you've just txted your sikkie thru and punched a few cones and opened a tinnie

Gruso 24-Nov-15 05:55pm

For those who don't have a reddit account. Excuse the tiny browser window I screencapped from.

This is reddit if you're a dirty lurker:

This is reddit if you're logged in, unsubbed from all the heinous shit, disabled thumbnails, etc:

This is /r/inthemix currently, with a nicer theme dropped in. Please disregard joke advertisement in the sidebar. That mod has been fired.

To see embedded pics/vids/soundclouds in posts (like you can on a forum), and unlock a billion other UI customisations, you can install the RES browser extension: http://redditenhancementsuite.com/

Once again, I just want to emphasise that we're not trying to force a mass migration to reddit... just encouraging peeps to keep it in mind as an alternate hangout, and hopefully demonstrate that reddit isn't actually a pile of shit once you've logged in and personalised it.

Hal Jordan 24-Nov-15 05:59pm

I never knew a moss piglet could survive in space. I should check reddit out more often.

horst 24-Nov-15 06:22pm

You (plural) think that reddit could be a long term solution?

but I see the need for an emergency collection point in case they simply switch off the lights.
Maybe a facebook group? maybe IquitITM?

Gruso 24-Nov-15 06:48pm

It's not my ideal version of a long term solution, but realistically, it's the path of least resistance.

I definitely couldn't do FB, especially at work. I also know there are peeps who can't do reddit at work.

Mickstah 24-Nov-15 09:59pm

Yeah I'm not doing FB.
Forum salvage is my preference. Migration if needed. Anything else will be second class.

Gruso 24-Nov-15 10:08pm

And I'm not giving up on the salvage. Just give us a fresh vB install and the fuckin' keys! (please xox)

well, unless there's some clause in the T&C about anything we've added to their Forum being their property, then all Intellectual Property is ours and we want it back, in its as-is format ;D

Yeah, it doesn't help much at all. I simply prefer the more structured and less cluttered appearance of a forum.

As for ITM, with absolute no communication from HQ to the mod team, no forum link from the main page and the mess that was left behind with Faster Louder/Mess + Noise forums, it feels like it's going to be a cut and run job.

Maybe better to accept our almost imminent fate, be organised to move to new ground now rather than let numbers slowly dwindle from 25 to nothing with people being frustrated by all the brokenness here.

Hey, I hope I'm wrong and they fix this place, but you have to be realistic :whyioughtta:

Fledz 25-Nov-15 02:35am

Yep let's move. This place is done.

SpaceMonkey 25-Nov-15 07:18am

Why don't we just organise a FB group for general ex ITM shit talk? And yes I know there's a few of you who're too cool for FB (ohai mick and Madz) but I'm sure you can organise a Google+ thing for the cool kids ;) )

BumblingBee 25-Nov-15 10:35am

it's not about being cool, it's about not wanting to sign up to a website with such a stupid name ;)

gravyishot 25-Nov-15 10:47am

Agree with those who say FB sucks. Reddit sucks less than that but is still an imperfect solution.

If the content of these forums get vaporised from the internet I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.

SpaceMonkey 25-Nov-15 11:58am

The main reason I suggested FB is simply that its the platform that the most of us would already be using. A lot of people don't use reddit and most never check Google+. Like it or not, FB is far more widely adopted.

horst 25-Nov-15 12:28pm

Well I suggested facebook just as a collection point, like on one of those fire evacuation maps, it's pretty useless for an in depth or even marginally less superficial discussion.

SpaceMonkey 25-Nov-15 12:29pm

That's kinda my thoughts, it at least provides s way to keep everyone informed on future developments.

Dr Rudi 25-Nov-15 01:30pm

Most have signed up for reddit already so no need.. undoubtedly new forum details will be there once this all goes south.

FB is some kind of corporate marketing brainwash social experiment anyway.

SpaceMonkey 25-Nov-15 01:48pm

"Most have signed up for reddit"? I'd say a far lower % than use FB, personally I avoid reddit as o don't need another time waster.

It does make sense for this purpose. If we end up having anything to announce, it will cover most current ITMers (and tons of old ones).

If someone wants to handle creating the group and doing the invites...

I found a heap of stuff buried in my forum profile settings stuff that let me access everything I've published, which I saved as PDFs that was after a lot of stuff had disappeared off the main page. Well before the complete redesign.

I really really hope they didn't just wipe everything, it'd be a damn shame to lose all that history. At the very least they could've warned people to save what they want.

Digitalgrub 03-Dec-15 01:46pm

I guess these things just die a natural death. With regionalized scenes, and most people plugged into various facebook groups, all the discussion of music and events is there.

Unfortunately it means that you do miss out on a lot of stuff, and can't have those really long music discussions. I'm actually surprised that ITM has all the EMC stuff going on - it's super top level industry stuff, and really cuts out the majority of dance music fans, DJs, and people putting on events, rave crews etc. It's kind of hard to have a community when a lot of the community isn't part of it. Is that just a sign of dance music being super popular, that it can be an industry/consumer divide instead...?

The feature articles have seriously dropped in quality too, mostly listicals.

stevenebsary 03-Dec-15 11:14pm

Yeah im hitting up perth people mainly, hopefully they kept photos, also we lost teknoscape.com.au which has given me permission to upload their archive. I used to contribute so i have some old editors and photographers details... failing that playing with web.archive.org i can pull out some limited stuff !

If anyone does hear anything feel free to hit me up. Lots of people are keen for event and photos archive for ood times sake :)

Facebook is hopeless for forum like discussion, which has its place. Prob put photos on there, as everyone loves to stay in the site to view things... and hate clicking out to read or look eh youtube! Lol bloody social media

Yeah they still appear to have contacts with the now very consolidated big end promoters (sony?) But with thier junkee brand, it doesnt work exactly with festivals or gigs yet... that will change maybe? Or not.

Lacking the old content is leaving a gap that themusic or someone may end up stealing... if they care or dont act

It was before the website got all broken. You used to be able to access any articles you'd published from your website profile thingo, where you had the artists you followed and 'friends' etc.

It's gone now. :(

Adzy_86 08-Jan-16 04:31pm

So shit, it will be a sad day if/when they kill these forums and the community that goes with it. Been using itm for ten years, and so have a lot of good mates who I either met on here, or met at events I heard of from itm.

Here's hoping the forums can be salvaged!

Adzy_86 08-Jan-16 04:39pm

Best case scenario they remove the forums from this shitty junkee etc. site or give us a separate domain, turn control over to us with a clean bug free install to do with what we want and continue the community

djarcana 11-Jan-16 03:05pm

Sad to see it go...

Came here feeling nostalgic, wanted to have a look see, read up on old threads/pics etc but its all gone :(

Hopefully something good comes from what is being planned, but we'll see...

Sadly that rarely works. Seen it happen dozens of times over the years -- a forum dies and it's transplanted or revived elsewhere; it's okay for a month or two when the oldies come out of the woodwork for nostalgic value, but they soon go back to their normal posting habits and the forum dies shortly thereafter. You can't save a forum without an influx of new members to replace the ones that leave, something ITM has struggled with pretty much since Facebook became the main social medium.

These forums are probably left on life support because the forum analytics are too valuable to the overall site metrics, what's ultimately pitched to advertisers. The sad truth is this forum will never recover and it's only a matter of time before someone switches the life support off.

adrian morton 25-Jan-16 09:43am

It's a sad day for the internets :(

I spent many hours having fun on this site.

R.I.P Itmer's

Gruso 25-Jan-16 10:02am

I went to Electric Gardens on the weekend. More than once I was asked "should we use real names or usernames" when meeting someone, which I thought was neat <3

ITMers. Not posting, but still kicking.

NismoR31 25-Jan-16 10:05am

I think 78% of the crowd there were ex-itmers. All the old farts come out of hiding for Digweed

A bit sad I didn't go, but also happy I didn't have to recover from it.

jdoodle 26-Jan-16 07:33am

yeah wasnt feeling fantastic yesterday, but had a top time

I gather the other 22% would have been shirtless dudebros looking out of place then?

Gruso 26-Jan-16 02:20pm

I'd say the festival was less than 5% shirtless. It was good.

airconteka 04-Feb-16 01:23am

When I moved to Brisbane I was blessed with meeting some great people from ITM, when I moved back to Sydney I didn't think I'd need ITM anymore but then I fell deeply in love with the S&F crew, even Derp. Now that I live in Adelaide I didn't expect to have any friends but I still managed to snag one via ITM. We were meant to be rock stars man!!!

Weinertron 04-Feb-16 10:02am

Well the Brisbane forum looks pretty dead, which is a shame because for the first time in 30+ years, I'm actually moving away from Melbourne to Brisvegasvilletown.

RIP techno-based social life :(

liberabit 04-Feb-16 11:19am

while the Bris forum may be dead, the techno scene here is still kicking at least.

if you get here quick you could see Derrick May and Jeff Mills this Sat night.

Weinertron 04-Feb-16 11:53am

Bah I arrive on Sunday arvo

I hear Vril is playing some time in March, so I'll probably head on down to that and try make some new friends there ;D

Yeah it's the worst decision ever. Articles never have comments on them anymore.
FB only comment systems need to die.

DANCINGDI 09-Feb-16 09:47am

Even the Age does it now for some of it's sections. :(

I am getting it on SMH all the time, so its not just a ITM thing.

I just tried smh, no problem. So far the only place I get it is here.

I'm downloading Homes under the Hammer at the moment, when it's finished I will switch off Disconnect and see what happens , but I think I did have it switched off earlier and I still had the problem . Doesn't hurt to double check. Btw what does it actually mean.

Safari iMac. What is really annoying is the they have a box to check if I don't want to receive alerts but I am still getting them

Bracko 03-Mar-16 12:09pm

No idea. Google the text and you find a few bullshit links, reddit post which I replied to someone complaining that it happens on news.com.au and that's about it.

N.b. I've actually never had it on this site.

DANCINGDI 03-Mar-16 12:11pm

Google was the first thing I did, Google is getting worse , if it can't be sold to you it doesn't rate a mention. :(

Bracko 03-Mar-16 12:16pm

I've managed to remove all that shit but now some of my queries return odd answers.

Add reddit to the search string.

Gruso 16-Mar-16 08:51pm

Have hidden a couple of sections that haven't had posts this year (Buying & Selling, Newsroom).

Thinking of putting the General category to the top of the forum index too (so it's above the City forums.)

NismoR31 16-Mar-16 10:17pm

SYSTEM BROADCAST

We've set up an ITM group on Slack, where the bantz is real. Invite is by email, so post here if you would like one.

Literally dozens of hot ex-ITMers are waiting for your call right now.

What's going to happen to ITM? I dunno, but I'm sick of waiting to find out. This is not an announcement that we're jumping ship. I'll mod ITM until its dying day. Slack is pretty cool though.

Join us! :prydz:

DANCINGDI 12-May-16 06:24pm

Gruso 12-May-16 06:26pm

Yeah Electric Gardens was wicked, lots of old faces there. Minimal wankery.

I would like to +1 to basically what everyone else has said. Honestly if it wasn't for ITM I would not be here today.

Shout outs go to RWS, Bracko, MadMike, Gruso, kimberly, WoWk, Darko, ILoveTheCubs, rica, j-rod-scott. Half you ****s dont post here anymore, but I am still saying OHAI because I fucking love you all and this place would not have been the same without the constant daily banter in the golden years of 2006-2008?

xxoo.

PS. If someone can get me a dump of the entire DB, will host for free forever. Have ample capacity (the joys of working in "the cloud" industry). Just need a smart cookie who can perform the data import/export etc.
PPS, can someone restore :munted: ?

Carphead 16-Jul-16 10:38pm

don't see the problem. you can post and that's all the matters.

Bracko 21-Jul-16 11:20am

.

so... who wants their postcount returned to zero?

gravyishot 21-Jul-16 11:07pm

me me me.

gravyishot 26-Jul-16 11:40am

what can we do about getting posts deleted?

Bracko 26-Jul-16 11:50am

nothing. ITM has never agreed to delete all of a users posts and we're not about to start.

gravyishot 26-Jul-16 01:36pm

so what happens to the db backend when the forum is completely shutdown?

Bracko 27-Jul-16 03:38pm

NFI. Maybe log a helpdesk call with Junkee to find out :bl:

gravyishot 29-Jul-16 12:06pm

i reckon being able to purge accounts would be good before the database with emails and other personal details ends up in the hands of who knows. ps junkee is now owned by ooh media.

Bracko 02-Aug-16 01:34pm

That's fine for you to say that. however the few admins left would need to delete millions of posts individually.

ain't happening.
