As seen on FB, I was shopping for a blazer the other week. I ended up buying one from J. Peterman on l-a's advice. I was just reading their company history, and it's mildly amusing.

Quote:

The J. Peterman Company was founded in 1987 by John Peterman, an entrepreneur who was, among things, formerly a minor league baseball player. It took up the travel and safari theme originated by Banana Republic that was abandoned by them in 1989. The J. Peterman Company's first product was an original horseman’s duster, promoted with a small ad in The New Yorker. The company grew by offering distinctive lifestyle merchandise (including reproductions of antique clothing and clothing worn in specific films)

From 1995 to 1998, the most popular television series at the time, Seinfeld, parodied the owner and the company with Elaine Benes working at the catalog under eccentric businessman and world traveler J. Peterman, played by John O'Hurley.

In 1997, the company raised private equity to expand. The company opened up 10 retail stores in several markets, including New York, Detroit, and San Francisco. The stores were moderately successful but the growth was too fast for the company’s small operations. Despite $75 million in sales at its peak, the company was forced into bankruptcy in January 1999.

The company was purchased by Paul Harris Stores in 1999, without the future participation of Peterman. Paul Harris Stores went bankrupt in 2000. In 2001, Peterman repurchased the name and restarted The J. Peterman Company, with O'Hurley as an investor. Tim Peterman, one of the founder’s sons, left E. W. Scripps in 2008 to become president of the company. John Peterman became Chairman.

Huh. I did not know J Peterman was a real company. Learn something new everyday.

nrjize 07-Jan-16 03:20pm

The best bit is that O'Hurley became an investor. Art imitating life, imitating art.

big eddie 07-Jan-16 03:27pm

Derelict 08-Jan-16 05:49pm

Moving company finally fixed my desk. PC all set up again. The acoustics in this dungeon I have my pc are quite strange. Sounds a bit off.

MadMike 09-Jan-16 11:46am

Heading out to drinks to meet the crew of the 3rd annual Caribbean sailing trip. Can't wait to get somewhere tropical. Cold SUCKS.

Gruso 09-Jan-16 12:27pm

It's been stupid cold, wet and windy in Sydney for the past week too. Thankfully back to summer now... just in time for me to work the weekend.

Mickstah 09-Jan-16 03:44pm

Melb has been orright. Nothing to write home about but there's been a few almost warm but sunny days.

Need a few more mid 30 days then I'll be happy

silverspoon 09-Jan-16 04:03pm

You'll get them next week.

But be careful what you wish for. This summer is just getting started.

Derelict 09-Jan-16 07:13pm

Can't wait to go diving on the boat tomorrow with 31° temperature.

Onijin 10-Jan-16 05:40pm

Would trade the hot weather over here for a bit of cold right about now.

Gruso 10-Jan-16 06:39pm

I heard you dropped a mixtape over there

Gruso 10-Jan-16 07:05pm

Sitting at venue mangled and fading. Thus bouncer comes over saying how you feeling mate. I'm totes yeah, had a good bididdy, I accept it's nearly over, might head after this one. Then I realise he's actually saying 'do you remember me. You asked me to get the lights dimmed at Cruise Bar NYE.' We are talk. We have similar professional backgrounds. He wishes me.good diddy. All is cool. I feel racist for not recognising him.

ianwil1976 10-Jan-16 08:18pm

Hi gang! Happy new year and all that bollocks, hope everyone's 2016 is going swimmingly thus far.

I've had a great fucking break; my bro has been here from the UK for the first time in a decade, been awesome hanging out again. He left today, back to to work tomorrow, ho hum.

So, re: the chat title, is this it then? The bell is tolling for us? It's...The End...? :emo:

day drinking started at uni and never gets old. Come to think of it, I don't know why we didn't do more.

srs question.... looking for portable speakers. my requirements are good sounding, reasonably light still, battery life not so important (or no battery semi OK, but a battery would be better), works ideally over WiFi, bluetooth ok, note that I will be linking with an android tablet and a windows phone, so requiring an app to drive it is useless with WP. highest priority is sound quality within reason of not being a huge speaker and weighing 10kg. flatter response over the spectrum the better.

all of the reviews I'm reading so far are focused on taking your sick tunes brah into the pool with your water-proof speakers and teh bass.

big eddie 11-Jan-16 03:25pm

behave - price range.

nrjize 11-Jan-16 05:03pm

A relative had the beats pill speakers over Xmas and they went pretty good but 1) eurgh beats and 2) just looked at the price and fuck that

Bracko 11-Jan-16 05:05pm

yeah, I didn't put that on there intentionally.... I guess under $500. was looking at the bose soundlink 2 mini. in Thailand they're equliv $380AUD which fuck that, but the GF will be buying it in Germany for $300 AUD equliv.

may consider the soundlink 2 but haven't read many reviews.

it pains me to buy Bose because of 1. the brand tax 2. too many fucktards I've had to work with who call themselves "audiophiles" have a loving of Bose.... err.... no.

Any of you keen?

Gruso 12-Jan-16 11:26am

Can't do, but dang, didn't even know he was here. Where is the whatson for comedians?

Gruso 12-Jan-16 12:11pm

Hey, I posted something nice about Bowie. This shit hole is still eating the occasional post.

Spoiler:
We sorely need ch-ch-change.

Derelict 12-Jan-16 05:17pm

Need somebody to sample the random "dee-na-dup" sounds that Freddie makes and use them in an electronic track.

i am an alias 13-Jan-16 10:38am

why is it that kids need the room to be dark to sleep. yet when there is a black out and it really is dark with out the night light from the monitor showing, they suddenly scream in the dead of the night.

god, i'm so tired.
