Man, I loved Ming D...He was good friends with Danny D and everyone @ Global Village. He came down to Melbourne and played at some of the parties put on out at Footsgray. Im originally from Melbourne but moved to Sydney....I loved soooo many dj's back in early 90's...have to mention some but not all and in no particular order, my faves include:

Rudeboy
He$$
David Carbone
Steve Robbins
ATOM 1
BWANA
Danny D
Lenny Dee
GTB ( George the Boss from Adelaide)
Ollie Olsen
Fred Disko

and must mention the amazing sounds I've enjoyed from Mixmasters like,

Carl Cox
CJ Bolland
Cosmic Baby
Kenny Ken
Laurient Garnier
Sasha
Sven Vath

Look let's just say I have alot of favorite Dj's as they all have made my old skool dayz of partying soooo much amazing fun...they all rolled out electrifying, delicious, delightful and downright thumping get your but groovin tunes.....I just can't choose one alone. I really could keep going on ....but I'll leave it at this for now....

Digital Hippie, couldnt agree more.

In terms of early Melb DJs, I would also add

Will E Tell.

Jeff Tyler.

Otherwise your list is pretty comprehensive there.

Perth oldskool standouts:

* Greg Packer (amazing to just stand there and watch, no suprise he won the perth DMC in 91 & 92).
* Darren Briais (ok hes originally a Queenslander but hes ours since '92).
* Chase - originally from over east but ours since '90.
* In-E-Fekt - retired waaay too early, but still has the silky skills when you get him on the decks.
* Rob Fender - again retired too early and like In-E-Fekt still has it when you convince him to have a go.
* Space Ace - had tunes that no-one else did and used them to great effect.
* Rachel Harvey - had a real ego about her, but she could mix!
* Hutcho - amazing record collection, someone who will make you realise just how incomplete your collection is everytime he plays!

From Brissie:

Angus & Edwin ;-)

Also had a great tape of Vegas, around 93/94 I guess which was awesome, unhappily long lost :-(

Internationally, the sets Carl Cox & Trevor Rockliffe played at Strawberry Fields (the first) were amongst the best I have experienced... "Pop the baloons" for those who were there! lol...

Did that have "The analogue signal", "This is the sound of Rotterdam", "F*** The Children" etc on it? Man that was one great tape, I would do practically anything to get another copy!

^^^ Was it pure hardcore? If so, this probably wasn't it. IIFC, following the debacle that was NYE93, Vegas released the "Let It Out" as a freebie thank you for those that supported Tribal (promoters/parties). Gee, I hope I just replayed those politics as it were. Anyway, this tape had a bit of 'ardcore, as Mr George Vegas was, but much of it was the 'anthems' of the day (Sydney that was, certainly not Melbourne, and not sure where Brisssie was at), and sped up to +8 (with an unknown extra pitch tweaking under the 1200 hood).

Um, does that sound like the tape? One track that comes to mind is "Fruit Of Love" - Tranceformer 2 (ie. happy) that mixed straight out of (I think) "English Muffin" - Lenny Dee (ie. hard)????

Anyway, it certainly scored Vegas more gigs.

G'day Spectrum...

Yeah mate it definitely had English Muffin on it... Wasn't all hard core either, no, had some of the anthems of the day, some more obscure and darker stuff too... Great tape ;-)

Sounds like the one...

Well...

At present, the tape's over 4000km away in a shoebox in the wardrobe of the spare bedroom of the house where my Mother-in-law resides...

...along with every other tape ('cept Crisis' Prodigy4-Outdoor, cause some dirty sweaty raver stole it) awaiting me to remaster them to the digital age...

Trying to think of the other tunage on it...

He he well I know that feeling mate; I am living in London at the moment and *my* shoeboxes of tapes are currently in storage - with everything else I own - somewhere in Brissie :-(

Excepting of course, my Vegas tape, my old Krome & Time tape, my *prized* Carl Cox& Trevor Rockliffe live at Strawberry fields 1, and my *entire* collection of DJ Angus tapes, which were all stolen by dirty, sweaty ravers ...

Too bad eh?

I'd so like to see these memoirs re-released on CD. Considering they were typically recorded on DAT, the quality would be magic.

The best I've been able to follow up is the Fantasia NYE93 series (http://www.fantazia.org.uk/Event%20info/ausss.htm), but even they've been crudily compiled with glitchy skips polluting the end of a few of the discs, and the videos feaure timecode splattered 'cross the top of the screen.

Oh well...

Been meaning to get in touch with DMC (Sydney) to request they re-release their Colossus party video on DVD (mixed by Pee Wee) circa 1994...

Yeah it is doing a great job that site... There are a heap of sites in the UK where you can purchase - or just download ( http://hardcorewillneverdie.com is a good one, go to the mixes page for a heap of rm files )

Aus really needs some sites like that; all those live sets on tape are a part of our history, it would be such a shame to lose them all for good...

Yep, for sure. And I will get it sorted one day, after our next trip back there. Once I'm done, I'll 'ring around' and see who else has got stuff to contribute.

It was due to this thread that I searched google and next minute I've pulled up this thread...

http://livechat.inthemix.com.au/foru...t=25754&page=3

... out of the woodwork. That should give the general Forum something to talk about other than "TimTams FTW" and/or "Poll: Spit or Swallow".

Lol -> just going back over threads to see if I had rudely failed to reply to anyone ;-) and came across this... Man reading that thread - and seeing people say that their first rave was 2000, 2003 etc -> Crikey! Makes me feel like an old man!

Yeah, you bloody rude bastard!

And did you see the "Two Tribes 2005" vote? Too funny, eh?!

It's an entirely different world for them now. Having had sprinkles of techno & trance via the advertising media in their pre-adolesence, they eventually get to venture outside into the "underground", start contributing to Australia's World's Biggest Munters statistic, and are completely ecstatic about this fresh new electro-breaky-80s-mash-up sound.

Isn't it... especially with the so called prog heads who are into a sound that was being played by our local DJ's back in 93/94 such as Phil Smart, Abel, Ray etc...

I have to to bite my tongue everytime I visit the prog forums.... they really have no idea!!!!

Yeah, your statement is great! Those guys should find something that has never ever been done before, if they really are 'true' prog heads.

I hate it when people say they like Wolfmother or The Music, or Jet, I mean really, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones and co have already done that. Why go back? New sounds only, or it's pretty much not worth listening to...

Angus, Ming D, Slipmatt, Akira, Cru-l-t, Archie, pre-obese Carl Cox - these guys would all drop the latest tunes, sample and cut the shit out of them, scratch shit up, drop crazy cartoon samples and stuff ... these guys were virtually DMC champions compared to your average beatmixing jukebox club DJ that Sydney has so many of these days.

Serious? well i guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I still listen to Fenix "Pure" and Paul Holden field of dreams three tapes and the mixing on them is damn good. I dont see how you could even class Vagas in the same league?

oh well whatever floats your boat.

I'll second that.. Vagas with Let It Out 95 is a complete joke! 94 was alright.. 95.. OMG.. *shakes head.

Have to rate Paul Holden with his mixed tapes tho! Have listened to them for years and the mixing is precision. Pity for some of his live mixes tho.

Re: Fenix - Pure.. is that the tape that has one side start with the "Inspector Gadget" song???? Dying to find out if my tape is labelled correctly or not. PM me)) If it's the one.. it's one of my FAVVVV tapes. Dying to find a better copy than mine

^^^ I'm pretty sure that tape was Spellbound (possibly Spellbound 3) and not fenix.

And akashanelson, I remember Quest - had a tape (no idea of name, can't remember year) that got an absolute caning for the longest time! That sure was a blast from the past!

If I still have it, certainly!

Would be great to catch up - we're hoping work sends us on conference in October - the last 2 years in a row we've tacked a weeks leave on the end and stayed in Syders. Will keep you posted.
