Long term use of Stilnox/Ambien
Does anyone use Stilnox (Ambien) long-term? I am being prescribed it as part of a pain management programme, and I find that it is excellent. It does exactly what it's supposed to.
I know some people have problems with sleepwalking and doing things like painting on the ceiling or driving their cars, but I think a large proportion of these people either don't go to bed immediately after taking it, or they are not eating properly. My experience has been that you have to have your three square meals a day consistently. I'm guilty of skipping dinner on days when I'm busy, and sure enough, on those nights I carry on with bizarre behaviour, and have been known to have some odd msn chats (you know who you are) However, I don't believe that many people have side effects that they haven't brought on themselves, to an extent. So, my point is to make some noise and debunk the growing perception being fostered by two-bit journalists who can't find real news stories to publish (not mentioning the Sydney Morning Herald's name) I've been using Stilnox for 5 years now, both "classic" and the new(ish) Stilnox-CR. As far back as I can remember I've had nightmares every night when I sleep, and using this helps me forget more of them, and it's difficult to articulate how much of a relief that is. Whenever I have felt the need to rest myself from it, I only have to skip a night and it's out of my system. Zolpedium tartrate has a half life of 2.6 hours, so this will be the same for the majority of people. Otherwise, I couldn't be happier with the result I get from using it. Anyone care to share their experience? No, I don't have any affiliation with Sanofi-Aventis, financial or otherwise, apart from being a patient who uses one of their products.

I'm told I say the cutest things sometimes. Also, last Friday night I moved my bottle of Nivea face cream and now I can't find it anywhere. ![]()

My ex-flatmate is a long term user of Stilnox and is a pyschotic bitch. Although I'm still not sure if she was a psychotic bitch before she started using Stilnox, it's hard to tell. This is part of the reason why I am no longer her flatmate
She doesn't think there is a problem ![]() |

i think like you say, its not really meant to be taken with alcohol and some other drugs. using as per the instructions i havent had too many notable experiences, but i only use it occasionally.
the only story i have is when a friend was staying over with me at the new place i'd just moved in to. i had my tablet as we were getting ready for bed, but then decided to hook up my computer. it hit me pretty quickly and it was like i was drunk, falling all over the floor and slurring, i dont really remember but my friend had to put me to bed. the end.

I've had two prescriptions of 20 Stilnox in the past and they worked ok for me but took at least an hour to put me to sleep. The last time I had one about 6 months ago, I woke up 2 hours later and spent the rest of the night (about 5 hours or so awake)
nothing short of a tranquiliser dart can put me or keep me asleep if my body chooses to stay awake ![]()

I had been taking stillnox most nights for a couple of years until recently to cure pretty chronic insomnia, the only problem was I wasn't sure anymore if I actually had insomnia cos I was so dependent on the nox. I honestly didn't find many bad side effects.. eccept maybe pulling over my TV, sleeping with the lava lamp, trying to leave the house without pants, the halucinations while having sex, the very strange pictures I'd draw and a number of other bizarre episodes. but these were really more amusing than dangerous, and certainly weren't the reason I stopped.
I think I just started to get a little vague and unmotivated afterwards, like a hangover, I know they arent supposed to give you that effect but maybe I had a build up or something. I needed my shit together for work n that so i finally gave it in and guess what.. I don't actually have insomnia anymore and sleep great now. still they were fukn fun after a big night for sure! I think If you really need em they are by far the best out there, But I have to admit I feel heaps better since I stopped. One less dependancy can only be a good thing right. I don't understand ppl who fuck with meds (in general). You're on them for a reason & you've been schooled how they affect you, so why would you mess with that? ..unless you had no grand plan to, say, LIVE lol.
I was on stilnox for 2 & a bit years a while ago in combination with another med. In that time I experienced absolutely no side effects & had the best, most restful sleep of my life. Like most long term meds I was weaned off it & now take absolutely nothing.

Reactions to medications can vary significantly from individual to individual. I don't know very much about Stilnox at all but to suggest that everyone can avoid side effects from a particular drug by maintaining a particular lifestyle sounds really naive to me.

I've used it occasionally. Went through hard times a year or so ago where I took it for a month, after stopping it took me two sleepless nights before I could sleep again but then, all good. I still have it around for the very occasional night when I'm stressing or wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep. No side effects, I think it's one of the cleanest sleeping pills around and I wake up very refreshed. It's like anything, too much of a good thing ends up being bad.

bizarre - but stilnox does nothing to me except make me hot & itchy!
i've tried it twice to get to sleep & it's just made me both times hot, itchy & wide-awake. i tried it to stop using xanax, but ended up just stopping using the xanax altogether. i've read up on some side-effects & can't seem to find any mention of mine, & the docs are baffled.

I'm not overly fond of taking somnolence medication, but some people just have really bad problems with sleep, and I'm unfortunately one of them, and always have been. It doesn't help that I feel like there's a bulldog clip on my balls, and no one can work out why I'm in so much pain. ![]()

]Stilnox does have side effects. They're not based on anecdotal evidence. They're based on clinical trails of the drug prior to it's release into the market and ongoing monitoring of the effect on human beings of the substance.
Dependance is also a side effect. ? k_x oxo

Dependance is also a side effect. ? k_x oxo As for depencency - it's more habit-forming that was initially reported by the manufacturer, but not as addictive as being reported in the media. Once again, story being blown out of proportion. I'm doing this because I'm over being eyed off like I'm some kind of junkie scum by GPs when I ask for a script. I changed medical centre after one doctor started questioning my mental stability, straight off the bat, within a few words after I asked. ![]()

Im always amazed when I hear anyone say "ive been taking this for a couple years" in relation to any medication for sleeping. Of course I understand that there are people who do actually need it ... although the range of side affects listed in this thread sound OTT - we are talking about a sleeping tablet! I wonder if people are getting hoodwinked by GPs who over prescribe (shut us up easily) instead of finding a cure for what ills us? Surely there has to be a better way to live your life and get some sleep without that ... I dont take any regular medication for anything and work hard to avoid it. I will save sleeping and vitamin pills for when Im old and unable to exercise or chew my own food anymore.

I understand exactly what both you Tim and DS are saying. As someone who fluctuates between desperation for pain releif and the desire to be free of meds both sides of the story are close to my heart.

Do you know anything about sleeping tablets? Do you know what it's like for people who suffer insomnia or sleep apnoea or other sleep related illnesses? Yes, there're probably GPs who "over prescribe" as you say, but I'm yet to meet one. I'm someone who will not take meds if it can be avoided. I tried everything under the sun -twice- before I was at my wits end & agreed this was the only way I'd actually get some quality sleep. Sure there're degrees of seriousness when it comes to something like e.g insomnia, and you're probably not talking about people like me in your post. What shits me however, is that you say "we are talking about a sleeping tablet!" and "... get some sleep without that". The way you completely dismiss any seriousness of the condition shows how completely ignorant you & people who think like you, are. Just, maybe once, hold off your judgement & step outside yourself to try & understand that people have their reasons for taking certain meds.

DS. What if people can't find a cure to what ills them?
tash. I can understand what DS is getting at and I gree to some extent. I think that doctors do overprescribe meds or are too quick to prescribe them without offering alternative solutions. k_x oxo

Tim - if you want to chat to someone who actually knows what they're talking about, talk to a doctor. try to go to a family GP, not a med centre. Another option is to speak with the med info people at the actual drug company. They are generally ex-physicans who are paid to record any adverse side effects of the drug and provide any information to the consumer.
(and yes, I work in the industry)

This ignorant, judgemental utter f*ckhead does not dismiss the seriousness of these medical conditions at all but I feel a lot of people could be better served without sleeping tablets in our "a pill will fix everything" culture. Maybe instead of writing a prescription for a sleeping tablet, doctors could make more referals to the sleep clinics ... with long term meds being viewed as last resort? I see friends end up in a vivious circle taking sleeping meds so they can get thru work, where as a couple of weeks off work instead might allow them the time and freedom to readjust their own sleep patterns back to some type of normality. Unfortunately we live in a busy world and we choose to put our own health second sometimes. I took these for a couple of nights in hospital a few weeks ago after an operation although I cannot really comment on how they were .. I was also still on morp then! Im sure I will be using them again short term when I go back in for donor bone graft surgery in 2 weeks. Four big surgeries in less than 3 months due to a head on car crash can really throw your system out. I find it hard to sleep in hospital (my current second home) and I dont want to develop a bad sleep routine while Im in there...Maybe I do understand, just a little ![]()

ive just started to get off it the last few nights ago. been using the standard ones on and off for the last 5 years. i would say it has had a major affect on my life. it kills all excitment in your life in every aspect. only thing that is fun is having more stilnox.there is the stress off having to hit another doc every week and spin another or a new story. and the cost off $35 a packet ( i myself was doing a pack a week ) hurts the wallet.
it has most recently had its hand in the end off a 10 year relationship with my partner. I dont think i ever really need it at the start, it was just the thing to after a big weekend but as time goes on you just want it so you dont need to think about the whole sleep thing. its been 3 night since i stopped cold turkey. havent had much sleep those few nights but i guess its just my body trying to get used to sleeping by itself. im hoping it all goes well. it can make you do some very dumb things, that im sure most wouldnt be proud off. |

i took it briefly (uni internship day-time, super night shift work all weekend and then the resulting insanity when you lay in bed for 6 hours on sunday night, eventually hysterical that you couldn't sleep - i can't even imagine how terrible it would be to feel like that longterm) and didn't have any of the fun psychadelic side effects described here.
not sure whether to feel pleased or cheated : ) a brief comment though tim - and i don't mean to be condescending at all, i happily admit that i don't know much about the particulars of the situation, but you mention going to medical centres and seeing various GPs... wouldn't a better way to deal with the situation e going to a single doctor (family GP as suggested above, rather than a med centre) who knew all your details and either didn't make you feel like a junkie and worked on your health problems in an ongoing way? i live in a junkie suburb in the city, and i've recently stopped going to our local medical centre after being totally fed up with the in-out-prescription service that you're inevitably going to get from a place like that. i had eczema so bad the skin on my hand so bad that my skin was literally cracking open and weeping (real sexy) and it was diagnosed as a fungal infection and i was given completely useless treatment for about 6 uncomfortable months. part of the misdiagnosis was undoubtedly the result of a crappy doctor, but a large part of it was the environment of medical centres - where doctors treat hundreds and thousands of different people, barely remember them, and don't really seem to give a shit about you as long as they get you out the door within your allocated 15 minutes.

I took stillnox for a couple of months straight - trouble sleeping caussed by work stress.
It worked very well but I found that I soon couldnt sleep without it which worried me. Once the work stress eased up I slowly weaned myself off it and I sleep fine now. I guess the sleeplessness was in my head so to speak. Didnt have any problems with sleepwalking or anything like that but I think over the long term it was making me a bit drowsy with a little less energy. Probably best to avoid taking it extensively if you can do so |

I used to take it, and used to do some odd things while I was asleep.
Steal my housemates' things, watch tv, eat, etc. It wasn't much of a problem, escept for the stealing my housemates' stuff. They weren't too happy about that.

I just re-read that thread and would like to add that different meds affect different people very very differently. Stillnox is no doubt safe for you if you have been using it without side effects, but that doesnt mean there isnt any truth in the news stories.
I do agree with you that journos blow stories waaaaaay out of proportion in a lot of cases! |

I've been taking half a tablet 4 or 5 nights a week for 9 months. No side effects whatsoever. When I first started it would knock me out for a good 7 hours but now sometimes I wake up after about 5 hours, but usually drift off again. On the weekends I make a point of not taking one, at least i can sleep in the next day if i struggle to fall asleep.
Yep I am a chronic insomniac - Those horrid nights, one after the other, of dreading going to bed, watching my wife doze off in 10 minutes while i read, turn out the light, toss and and turn for an hour, read some more, try again, watch as the clock goes past 1am, 2am, 3am, my brain REFUSING to shut down, finally falling asleep at 5 or 6am just in time for the alarm to go off. Chronically tired and weak from lack of sleep, having a cold or flu 90% of the time coz my immune system is shot. Stillnox is WONDERFUL and has saved me from this horror. |

Wow - this drug is legal AND subsidisied by our taxes??????
Anyone read this and see a connection between the drug companies influence on govern, ent and the current state of illegal drug poicies?? Stillnox sems = Hallucinatons, highly adictive WTF, crazy off the wall experiences. the closest I ever hearsd of similar experiences on illicit drugs are the random bnad trip and crack heads!!! I have never seen such an overly negative resopnse to people describing the effects of pills, coke or pot. Yet these are illegal substances and traders of these products can be gaoled. Meanwhile the producers of stillnox are given artifically higher profits through government subsidies. hmmm

wasn't til a flatmate couldn't sleep cause of the fridge beeping one night that she got up, saw a bright light, found me in the kitchen snoring in the fridge, next to a bucket of kfc bones, that i thought ah finally sleep. And it ran out. true story. ah good times. |

My wife was taking Stillnox, it appeared to have no side effects, but we did notice it put here out real quick.
The after a month or so, I was groping her while she was asleep and she didn't put up any fight so i thought "ok, she is horny and wants sex", so I went for it. She played an active part in the sex, got up afterwards to 'clean up' and came back to bed. I didn't bother to mention it as we never do (long term thing I guess) But anyway a little while later the same thing happened again a couple of times, thought nothing of it. Anyway, one night I thought this is a bit weird, so I went for it again and it was full on, lots of orgasms for her, she was actively involved as usual, cleaned herself up, back to bed, etc, so I mentioned it to her the next day and she had absolutely no recollection, so we planned to do it again that night and video tape it, it was exactly the same, she watched the video the next day, was shocked and has not taken them again. True story |

I doubt I would have discovered my (not so rare) ability to function on just a few hours sleep a day if I listened to doctors. I'm sure they'd have me on something like this, in a pointless attempt to make me normal, just like all the other drones. Still, $35 x 52 weeks = $1820 a year for 5 years. Not to mention consultations fees for the GP to boot, I can see why it makes good fiscal sense for the industry to push a pill a day as a "sound and safe" way to deal with the problem of insomnia.
What I find is an hour or two in the sun and a bit of activity resets my body clock and gets me into bed for a longer sleep than I normally would take. Perhaps not-so-oddly enough, this is also well regarded as the best cure for jetlag. It just so happens I went for a ride and a swim yesterday afternoon, was in bed by 8pm and slept soundly for almost seven hours last night. I don't thnk I would have totalled seven hours sleep in the preceeding three days. I'd just like to ask the people who've posted they've used stilnox for long periods of time, does your work or lifestyle keep you out of the sun? Do you work inside, in a workspace with little or no direct sunlight? Do you keep fit by hitting a gym with artificial lighting? We've only had artificial light to work by for the last what, three, four generations? Before that and back into prehistory our bodies are designed and geared for an 'up with the sun, work in the field, bed by dark,' lifestyle. We fuck with that at our own peril, I feel. I'd be really interested to know if you habitual and long term stilnox users have a common aversion to or lack of time for catching some natural rays every few days. How common is insomnia among, say, builders, farmers, posties and other people who work in the sun or is it something much more prevalent in people who work (and work out,) indoors? Sure, I hit stretches where I don't see the sun for two or three days when I'm really busy, but I make time to go for a ride in the morning or afternoon (midday sun = cancer,) down to the (outdoor) pool where I do a few laps and have a bask to get things back into synch afterwards. Not because it's an excellent cardio vascular workout, which it is, but because I know I need to let my skin drink up some sunlight once in a while. I'm not saying everyone can or should do the same, I just mention it for contrast. I don't use any prescription drugs, I do have abnormal sleeping habits but I'm also a productive and (reasonably) well balanced person.

Yeah there was a thing in the SMH about her the other day and her parents fighting for the fact that Stilnox contributed to her death (I think she was the niece of a QC or something like that) lead to discussion as to whether stricter warnings should be labelled on the drug and should it be put in the habit forming category which ultimately means doctors should be less willing to over prescribe it. It was previously considered to be very safe and presribed very easily when it hit the market. The girl who died was about to get her doctorate. One of the lecturers in the department my bf works in at Sydney uni knew her well and was deeply affected by her death. She had been an honours student, studied OS, had been offered places at Harvard and the like, had an extrememly successful run of education achievements behind her with her whole life in front of her. At the time of her death it was reported as a suicide as she jumped off the harbour Bridge on the North side onto the pavement below. There are memorial flowers there at the back end of the park under the Bridge. In the lastest report in the SMH it was reported that in the security footage from the Bridge shows her staggering in a sleep like state, climbing up onto the concrete ledge of the cycleway and jumping/falling. She had been taking Stilnox for some months but had recently stopped taking it in favour of another sleeping pill (can't remember which one). Still though her family seemed to believe it was the Stilnox that set her for some kind of wierd habitual semi sleep behaviour (even though it wasn't stilnox that she was at the time of her death). A combination of a Police officer who worked on the case believeing from the footage that she was not in a normal state when she jumped and her family also getting the same feeling from the footage lead to them seeking stricter classification on the drug which took effect this week just gone. It was decided that the drug will not be considered a drug of abuse but will now have warning labels. Anyway... that's the story as I know it. Here's the link to the recent story about the girl that passed away http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/...190740530.html k_x oxo

I still think it's fantastic. Haven't used it in months, but there have been a couple of tough periods in my life when I'm sure it kept me sane. I used it non stop for a month once, couldn't sleep for two night after that but fine again after that. If I've ever run around raiding the fridge in the middle of the night, cleaning, or driving cars asleep, then I was blissfully unaware of it.

A friend of mine went really crazy on it.. he had been using amphetamines in a recreational manner all night and in the morning took some stilnox to try sleep, but the other drugs kept him awake, and he hallucinated REALLY vividly and was saying and seeing extremely bizarre shit. He had a great time but still it shows what an effect this stuff can have

I agree with you. I've never taken it over long periods and that's probably why I find it so brilliant. If I've had lone periods of disrupted sleep I can take it for three nights and it completely resets my body clock and I start sleeping normally again. I wonder whether people who have problems with it drink or take it long before they actually lie down to sleep. I've only ever taken it then read a book for five minutes and drifted off. Anyway... k_x oxo

I've heard so many crazy stories about stilnox over the years that I probably wouldn't take it for non-recreational reasons. That girl's recent, unfortunate death has made me even more wary of it.
I do suffer from disrupted sleep, so I have considered stilnox in the past. I find the light sleepers like temaz don't work for me at all. If I really want to med myself to sleep, a couple of panadeine fortes and a few drinks is a great short-term solution. I <3 codeine. But the easiest way for me to cope with repeated insomnia is to not fight it, I just pull an allnighter, go to work, and get an early one the next night. It does mean spending the day trashed, but no-one notices anyway, and I'm now a trooper when it comes to sleep deprivation. And at least I can use those night time hours productively.

Well, it's been 9 months since I posted this thread... and while I have the occasional sleepwalk (ny flatmate has some doozeys she's seen me do) they do their job well. My pain problem is neurological, there's nothing actually wrong with my gentlemen's area. No one would operate to try to improve the situation because I would risk fertility, so I went on a rollercoaster ride to find a combination of drugs which provide at least some releif.
I hit the jackpot with Amitryptaline. Endep + Edronax modulates the pain, Epilim controls pain spasms, and stilnox gets me to sleep at night. On Saturdays and Sundays I take Imovane (Zopiclone) which don't make your sleep onset any faster but you feel nice and fresh in the morning, unlike the older benzodiazepines. I used to have to take 8 panadeine forte a day.

I've had it prescribed a few times as I get terrible sleep apneoa (sic) every now and then for long periods. I found that while it did knock me the fuck out, I didn't have any adverse side effects, save for the fact that the next day I felt like I'd had a weekend on the pingers - groggy, disorientated, fresh as a 10 day old corpse - and basically felt more tired then not having slept properly.
I sleep a bit better these days. I don't drink anwhere near as heavily or regularly. I don't do drugs anymore ( actually I ain't done any for a few years so that really hasn't had an effect) I try and do a bit of exercise every day. I try and get a bit of sunlight which is difficult in an English Winter, though it has been genuinely sunny the last week or so. I'm starting to eat a little more healthy as well. Still, sometimes, when my mind races itself to the middle of inanity, I can't help but have a shithouse night's sleep.
