i was going to get serato until a mate pointed out to me that i'd have to carry my laptop around to each gig....and then look after it.

i'd rather not have to worry about losing $2k worth of equipment while getting drunk after the gig

have you already got decks and/or a lappy?

decks + serato + lappy is a an expensive way to start out, but great if you can afford it.

most clubs will have an office where you can leave your laptop, or at least a coat check.

In my opinion it depends on the genre's of music and types of sets your going to play
If your a more fun and wild DJ who plays the more House, Electro type genre's that require fun mashing and looping and tricks etc etc
Get CDJs

If your a more serious say, minimal.. tech.. techno DJ get serato.

Thats just my opinion, don't flame me :-)

wham... most clubs are run by criminals.

quantum... this is where i learnt that no matter how drunk i am whenever i stand up i take stock of what i have

but a laptop is pretty easy to run off with, 100vinyl, not so easy

dslvr, SSL was designed for scratch DJ's primarily.... i think they do a bit more mashing, looping and "tricks" than your average faux mohawk electrofluro DJ.

traktor + akai MPD24 = very powerful weapon.

if you want to play out, CDJ's

if you don't care, serato.

setting up and shit is a pain in the fuckin arse and it won't be long till every deck in a club has been smashed to shit by CDJ DJ's using the tourneys as a great place to prop their entire pirated music collection.

fuck CDJ's and fuck serato. you need to look into getting a flute.

rubbish.

there's no issues with dropping the cables into a setup. since most clubs don't sink their gear it's piss easy.

and turntables were more trashed from being used for 20-50 hours a week than someone putting cd cases on them.

I'd be more concerned with my vinyl then my laptop.
Everything I have on my laptop is backed up on a removable drive.

Can't say the same for my vinyl collection

final word.... my laptop is now covered fully for 'out of residence' as well as in due to minor insurance issues around 6 months ago.

try doing that with vinyl

First I've heard of it?

I can categorically say that no club I've ever played at in Brisbane has had serato as apart of their installation in the club. I've seen loads of people use it - but it's always been their copy and not the clubs.

Also is the jury out on industry standard with Serato vs Traktor? I own serato but I wouldn't go dropping bombs like that.

i just hate being that guy that has to fiddle with the mixer while the last guy is trying to finish their set. and when i'm done i can't jsut get loose - ive gotta get my serato outa there again or wait until the end of the night to go home.
i cant just unplug my headphones and bail.

I generally wait till they're a few tracks in and then kick the cables. but most often i use the decks, they use the CDJ's and i hook into the channels the tables were/are on.

so there's no problems with the traktor setup, just a reach around and unplug, no swapping cables.

i think it's only fair to reach around the cable after you've unplugged.

i wanted to get serato because am into turntablism but most club's i attend to these days dont even have turntables anymore so it really sux for me basicly i have heaps of crate of vinyl and dont really get to play them out anymore...

i've also just got some cdj's cause the gig's i get there hardly ever turntables there.

but i still prefer the sound of vinyl than mp3.

even if they do have decks i find it really hard to scratch on them.. always too high, or not in battle position, or really loose tonearm...

CDJ's are at their peak so any club you walk in u find CDJ's.I think searto is still in its developing stage especially its no-good interface which does not support anyother digital DJ programme.

I've played on a mates version of Serato and I own a copy of Traktor. I much prefer Traktor when playing out, which is why I bought it. I find it so much more fluent to use.

But I'm buying a pair of CDJ's soon because I'm sick of lugging my laptop around, even though I play 90% of my own tunes I can still do that with CD's and it's so much less stressful worrying about a bunch of CD"s versus a laptop.
