The DJ Booth

*rant* Same tracks. Same kit. Same ideas. But what about the execution?

*rant* Same tracks. Same kit. Same ideas. But what about the execution?
We've read the comments and heard the jokes about the "Post your Pioneer Setup Here" and "DJs playing the same tracks", and now I'm coming to understand the pain.

I saw this yesterday:

Media Player

And immediately thought "Bugger. I've been beaten to the punch again: so much for trying to be original". But then realised "Sheeeeet. (Nearly) everyone has a set of 1200s and 1000s, so I won't necessarily be seen as a biter".

In the process of finalising my setup:

The What:
- 2x Vestax VCI-100
- 1x Vestax VCM-600
- 1x Korg nanoPad
- 1x Native Instruments Audio Kontrol 1 interface
- 1x Native Instruments Audio 8 DJ interface
- Native Instruments Traktor Scratch Pro
- Ableton Live (7 LE, at the moment)
- 1x workstation running 3x screens (want to move to 2x 13" MBPs)

The How:
- 2x VCI-100 running TSP on 1x screen, audio routed through AK1 interface
- From the four (mono) outs, each channel is routed into a separate channel of A8DJ interface
- Ableton accepts each A8DJ channel into its own audio channel
- 1x VCM-600 and 1x nanoPad operating Ableton across 2x screens

The Why:
Intent is to run 4 decks mixing and looping, with effects being applied by Ableton and two additional channels running samples.

The Pinch:
So I've gone and had a look again at the vid and realised my execution of the concept will be different. What they’ve done is route their audio into two different channels using a common mixer. My idea was to have 2x rather than 1x set of jog wheels, and have the audio route from Traktor into Abelton Live (no intermediary mixer). The other thing is that the guy on Ableton with the MIDI mixer is playing loops by the looks of things: my routing of the audio through Ableton would be to apply effects and launch additional clips.

And so:
Are any thoughts to be had about this, or did you just waste 5 minutes of your life that you'll never get back?

PS:
Don't expect people to rate the setup (and no, I'm not of a belief that vinyl and CDs are dead), but find working off MIDI to be a bit of fun (that, and haven't had a set of decks within reach for almost a decade now). The nature of MIDI as well means that the control surfaces can pull double duty (if I ever locate that creative bone and try to produce a piece) and I'd be interested to try my hand and making an app in Reaktor.

You'd be correct, but...
...most of the vids from the Vestax website (that's where I originally ran into) are unimpressive.

I could only hope it would turn out to be more of a performance (versus a set) rather than two fellas desk-humping.

No thanks.

Already have four. Now if you have four hamsters to run them, I can start a belt-driven revival...
