ST-150 Tonearm Noise
Hey All,

Ive got an ST-150 here and have noticed that I can hear the tonearm resonating when certain music is being played.

For example, when a kick drum is playing you can hear the drum resonating through the tonearm.

The tonearm suspension is not loose at all (i have heard heard of a few people having problems with loos suspension).

Its like the tonearm needs some sort of dampening to stop this, has anyone else noticed this? Are there any mods that could be done to increase the mass of the tonearm?

I understand it is a common problem with the ST-150's... but more info required.

1. Is it both TT?

2. Are you monitors placed on the same desk as the TT?

I only have one of them at the moment unfortunately.

It is place up on a shelf a good distance from the monitors. Not that this should matter as it still happens when listening through headphones (with monitors turned down).

I wonder if i sprayed some of that expanding foam stuff into the tonearm it would help deaden it a bit...

I wouldnt spray anything into the tone arm as it would most likely unbalance it.

Can you feel any movement when you hold the cartridge end of the arm and lightly push/pull or twist?

are you sure your not hearing the cartridge, you should be able to hear the track with all your monitors/headphones off

No movement whatsoever, i very carefully tightend up the grubscrews a while back as the tonearm was a bit loose.

With my headphones on i can hear a resonance in the low mid range coming from the tonearm. It is the same sound as when i tap the tonearm with my finger, you can hear the tonearm"ring". Its like certain frequencies resonate through the tonearm. its hard to hear when a full song is playing but when its only the kick drum ior snare drum you can definitely hear it.

I guess this is why people compalin about the 150s feeding back in clubs.

Obiously i wouldnt be able to hear the cart when i am sitting 2 meters away from the TT with headphones on full.

cut a tennis ball in half, put that over the legs of your turntable, kind of like rubber "socks" for your decks,

Thanks for the advice, though its not the TT resonating its the tonearm.

Conclusion: ST-150's are poo, time to buy a Linn Sondek LP12.

Ive never seen anyone do it to a Stanton deck but I have put REGA and SME arms on SL1200s before, I wouldnt think it would be hard on a ST150.

Could the noise be the hum from the power supply Cumming up through the platter-stylus-cartridge-arm, maybe you just need a thicker slipmat or a rubber one! I dont know much about those decks really so its hard to say!

So i found the solution to this. I bought a 1200.

I have tested 5 ST-150's and they all have this problem looks like it must be inherent with the design.

I've played on the 150's before and never heard this noise, i would rate them as one of the better DJ TT's. How much do you want for your 150?
