I love the stuff from these guys. Their flanger and delay plug-ins are great, and they have a vocoder, something that seems to be hard to find in freeware. Can't wait to play around with this new synth

Edit: Downloaded this afternoon. Coupled this with the TAL-Tube plug in and had it sounding nice and dirty almost immediately.

I was searching out good tube emulators a while back, and did manage to come across a couple. Not sure how they compare to Antares, but there were a few good ones. Based off of the notes I took at the time:

  • TLs Saturated Driver This was probably my favorite one. I think the guy who made this retired from making plug ins, but still has them posted for downloading. Windows only though, so I don't use it regularly.
  • Ruby Tube Sounds decent, but keep the drive down.
  • Ferox Tape Sim This is a tape simulator as opposed to a tube emulator, but might provide the sound you are looking for.
  • Tal-Tube This is one of the few Mac ones, I use it on almost everything. You can push the Drive settings and it still sounds great. Just got their reverb plug in too, it's probably going to end up being my favorite 'verb plug in.

I haven't used Antares Tube in years, but I don't remember it sounding particularly tubey, nor great. It was better than Ruby Tube, though.
For 'analogueisers' I head towards the Massey Tape plug-in, BombFactory 1176 and errrr... I dunno, whatever I've got at hand.

been playing around with this one lately:

SSL SE 4000E Listen Mic Compressor
http://www.solid-state-logic.com/Music/LMC-1/index.asp

you can extract a bunch of meaty bounce by pushing it really hard after a a decent reverb. aka drum buss.

Free E-MU Proteus XV Download. I havn't played with it yet (too busy for the next couple of days) but it aparently includes the E-MU Z-Filters. It seems like it is a rompler capable of loading E-MU soundbanks. It is not a full on sampler editor like the Emulator X3.

Yeah I know they aren't bad.. except when you play a note it plays the same note just a few octaves down? Is there anyway to get rid of that? It sound like shit!

Just curious, has anyone written any songs using all free instruments and plugins? Besides their host, hardware etc of course?

I think I'll have that as my goal in the next few songs
