What is techno?
hey guys. im relatively new to EDM (have been following for about a year) and i have stuck to house the whole time. lately though i have been getting into other stuf, dubstep, trance and im interested in techno. i look it up on youtube and im sure you can guess what comes up (hardcore, etc mixes from people that have no idea). so im wondering if you guys could put up some songs that could be called a definition of techno.

cheers

gee man, its like saying 'define rock music' - pretty hard to encapsulate in one track.

Forget youtube, use that to find stuff once you have some artists in mind. For now check out the techno sections of Juno and beatport.

Go through the 18 pages of mixes in this thread, plenty of direct links for easy downloading, all mixes are quality -

http://www.inthemix.com.au/forum/sho...221983&page=18

That might not really tickle your fancy straight away though, sort of an acquired taste that sort of stomping techno.

Go through this thread for the suggestions and recommendations here -

http://www.inthemix.com.au/forum/sho...d.php?t=283173

I'll always maintain that that Dusty Kid Essential Mix (that I posted in that thread^) is a good way of broadening your horizons when starting to branch out into different genres of EDM.

I don't go to be in the VIP area and drink fancy champagne. I don't need big breaks and a big song with a buildup and lights and smoke.. all you need is a kickdrum and a good bassline. You don't need any of that other shit. Na, I'm not going for none of those reasons... I'm just going for the music.

I say find a techno song you like.

go onto youtube. play it.

then click on the recommend videos on the right and you will find other tracks you like. might not be a super accurate way of finding music but i have found some good stuff over the years following those links

hehe..indeed.

I would say go to a party and experience techno as it should be experienced. Go to some dingy club/warehouse venue, have a few brews and dance ya ass off til ya lose about 5kgs. If ya dont acquire it then, time to move on.

IMO techno is about the approach more than the specific sound palette. The sheer variety of music posted in this thread attests to that. Asking "what is techno?" is just impossible to clearly answer for mine.

How old are you? I didn't get into techno properly until 2008, before that I was listening to cheesy trance bombs and hands in the air stuff and before that I was listening to metal / rap / hip-hop / classical music.
What you listen to / dig takes years to develop properly. I listened the other day to some of the stuff I had on my old hard drive and I rolled my eyes pretty hard and they nearly got stuck in the back of my head.

Just find stuff you dig, doesn't matter if some people on the internet don't approve of it, who gives a fuck. You don't have to like techno.

Also it's good to note that all of the music posted here sounds infinitely different in a warehouse / club / festival setting.
Plus take some drugs and see how you feel about dance music after that as well. Anyone who says dance music didn't evolve around ecstasy is kidding themselves.
Don't get hooked though, drugs are evil and will make you rob grannies for that next hit of space dust.

@slicydicer: fuck the drugs man lol. im 16 in a couple of months. from what i have seen of you in the forums you seem like a pretty good guy and speak some common sense. for example you were saying what you listened to before techno and stuff, well i have managed to rid myself of almost all of the top40 sort of stuff i used to listen to up until about a year ago, except (i will probably cop some shit here but meh) some guetta stuff, he got me into dance and house music and despite what he cops he has done a lot for house and he seems pretty awesome live. not sure i agree with some of his latest productions though

I'm not advocating drug use, I'm just saying that ecstasy played a pivotal role in the 80's early 90's of dance music and raves. And there's nothing wrong with liking top 40 music for that matter, you gotta like what you like and evolve with it naturally. I don't dismiss anyone for the music they like.

David Guetta is a smart promoter and is good at marketing.

This is what an online thread should be! History lesson, lots of techno talk, some comedy, an input from all ages. Timbo, if you like Tech-house, a label definitely worth checking out is: Diynamic. Then find a copy of Lee Burridge's Balance Mix and listen to all three CD's from start to finish, and play it loud!!

Im not as familiar with the sound with these guys here, since Im only 18.
But what first got me into it, was seeing Laurent Garnier at Stereosonic like over a year ago. "The man with the red face", just blew me and my friends faces.
