"Mainstream trance is terrible at the moment."

^ I would be more inclined to agree with.

Otherwise, you are not digging for records on Beatport, Audiojelly, etc, deep enough. Personally, I prefer the more esoteric labels anyway, but occasionally one of the big labels like Armada and Anjunabeats comes out with a bomb.

Anyway, it is not like every producer for niche trance sub-genres have died off or will be... to my knowledge.

^yep

If you're going through the charts couldn't agree more. But this is the same with literally every genre (especially on beatport); there's rarely a track in the top 10 chart of any genre which is worth playing, or listening to.

Digging however still brings results

I agree to some extent, some labels are remaining consistent and not "chucking out" releases like Subculture, and AVA (both subsiduries of Armada). Neuroscience and 405 Recordings too.

I think its good that DJ's have to dig alot deeper nowadays rather than simply playing the top 10 from Beatport or Juno etc etc. It reminds me of the digging for Vinyl days (ahhhh nostalgia lol)

Its also testiment to the scene that producers like Guiseppe Ottaviani, Kyau and Albert, Stoneface & Terminal and Ronski Speed are still producing after all these years alonsgide the Ferry Corsten's, Armins and Paul Van Dyks of the world.

I wouldn't say that Trance is terrible, I think its more diverse i.e. not just the 138-140bpm uplifting hands in the air stuff (although i love that) and the number of producers and grown massively, which brings with is various influences from all over the world.

Even Subsculture, Enhanced, and Discover have been noticeably lower in quality - or maybe originality. Perfecto is going great guns though, and then there's all that great stuff sitting somewhere between trance and prog psytrance. It's there to be found if you dig deep - but IN GENERAL, now that 'trance' somehow manages to include dub step, electro, house, prog, techno, AND trance... there's a lot of commercial, mainstream, 'quick fix', 'wow factor' tunes. Makes it even harder to find the 3 - 5 decent tunes each month!

Ergh, this discussion is so

But this set by Tyas has reignited my faith in some quality, fun, driving, rolling bassline, 140bpm trance sets (note: even though there are some oldies chucked in). Electrovoya need to start their engines again, miss their stuff! Also, this set aint for the faint hearted...

Sean Tyas Live @ Trancemission Stuttgart, 2011 - Tytanium Sessions 126

1. Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus (Eric Prydz Remix / Sean Tyas Edit)
2. Phunpark - Midnight (Sean Tyas Remix)
3. Funkagenda & Fatboy Slim - What the Fuck (Tyas Rework)
4. ID - ID
5. Ferrin & Morris - Precious Times
6. Darren Porter & Sy Gardner - Springs Scent
7. Skrillex - Reptile (Kent & Gian Sardowsky Rework)
8. Mord Fustang - Lick The Rainbow (Sean Tyas Edit)
9. Sean Tyas & Bjorn Akesson - Zahi
10. Riialto - Crystal
11. Ruff Driverz - Dreaming (Neal Scarborough Rework)
12. Laura Jansen - Use somebody (Armin van Buuren Rework) erghhhh
13. Sean Tyas - Banshee
14. Sean Tyas - Believe
15. Sean Tyas - Solo (Roses Mix)
16. Insigma - Open your eyes (Sean Tyas Rework)
17. Photographer - Highway
18. Gouryella - Walhalla (Darren Porter Rework)
19. Sean Tyas - By the way
20. Jean Michel Jarre - Souvenir of China (Sean Tyas Rework)
21. Sean Tyas - Lift

http://www.filesonic.com/file/oQRLwc...9-SO_32835.rar

EDIT - Askew and Oakenfold's sets are pushing a superb underground trance sound, not necessarily psy, but top uplifting, driving trance, as it should be. And lastly, PvD is still smashing it out

I moved more towards progressive psy trance nearly 3 years ago now for the same reasons. Also, I am offended if I pay lots of money just to see some big name play on cdjs from the Beatport trance top 100. I can do that at home for nothing.
Still, even in prog psy, there hasn't been anything startling. Hanzo maybe, and about a dozen more tracks from last year.
So I cleaned up my collection, and play the best of the best of those. I found, if your music is good, it does not have to be the latest and greatest.
I play a lot of ambient and electronica instead these days. I do agree on John Askew though. He is one class producer.
Creativity comes in waves, I guess. We have to expect some quiet periods before we get something new.

Armin/armada a&b/anjunabeats have completely destroyed the scene. The obession with whack vocal tracks and the genre crossing cheesy melodies has gone too far. Thank god i still have fleming to listen to to remimd me why i fell in love with trance in the first place.

Also good to see people like airwave producing decent music still.

A lot of people say that about Airwave from what I've seen actually...

But I'm gunna have to disagree with you on Anjunabeats/Above & Beyond/Anjunadeep though... even though, yep, it's following a similar down-tempo, genre-less path I dont think what I'm hearing from them is bad...

I consider stuff like Rank 1 - Airwave as a fucken cool, emotive, moving, hands-in-the-air, pop-another-flip type laser induced epitome of what my trance life involved. Some people consider that too old to be any good ("wheres the vocals?!/11four") and some people think that's sellout melodic cheesy crap ("90's goa was where it was at maaan!), etc.

Each to their own...

Why would anyone flame John Askew?

Fark, his set at Godskitchen Perth earlier this year was tremendous. He is a pretty eccentric character as well.

Anjunadeep is presently releasing some stuff that is actually kind of "deep". The cheesier, disco-tinged stuff gets long in the tooth quickly, but tunes like Oliver Smith - Oceanic are pretty dang good.

I honestly have no idea why I no longer religiously listen to J00F's Global Trance Grooves. Perhaps it's not dark and driving enough, which is how I like it. I haven't downloaded a show since the August J00F Editions 2hr mix.

GTG has actually gotten darker of late? It's slowed down, which is one of the reasons I'm not quite listening to it the *exact moment* it's uploaded, but that's a testament to how much of the deep stuff is quality vs the full on stuff atm. Turbo mix still rocks most months. But yeah, if anything GTG is darker than ever I think?

When you say trance I'm assuming you guys are talking about the older stuff like airwave (as an example)? If so then yeah not a lot of producers make that sort of early 2000's kind of stuff, which is a shame in a way (once I hear one classic I start combing through my library for all my favourites for an inordinate amount of time) but I still like what's being released today.

p.s. Anjunadeep is one of my favourite labels atm!

Because everyone has a right to voice their opinion. Not every trance fan is going to like Askew, even though he's 'the' rogue trance DJ of 2011, and possibly of all time lulz. He does play awesome stuff, however. The way I see it is that, if you are not producing big commercial-like sounds, whether trance or house, or whatever subtype within those genres, then they will exist, but will take the back seat to artists like Arty, Orjan, Armin etc etc.

Also, take into consideration how accessible music production software is, DJ equipment, and DJ tunes. Many more producers and DJs on the scenes means a lot moar crap and production mimicry. Whilst I enjoy some Anjuna now, most of it is trash. Most of Armada is trash. But with some good searching and patience, there's always going to be those gems. As mentioned, mainstream trance is undergoing a massive depressive episode.

trance is not terrible until acts like Flip & Fill, DJ Sammy and Ian Van Dahl are the dominant acts of the genre at a particular point in time (like in 2002)

But then again. there isn't much "trance" coming out at present since its mostly just house of some description ahha

I've never properly understood the path of old trance nuts moving onto psy... BUT when we all move on, I guess it's to the harder & faster stuff or the proggier and tech-houseier stuff *shrug*

I prefer the latter.

I prefer a latte.

I prefer a latte.

Someone get me a coffee.

Still love my melodic prog stuff. Sasha's recent set on nye in adelaide was great. Personally a lot of the techier stuff is cheesy with cheesy breakdowns and build ups but there is some good stuff amongst the crap. Im finding that a lot of the psy producers are producing sounds which are way more similar to the old deeper trance sounds than the current sh1te being brought out by the armada/anjunabeats mafia cartels.

I am severely over the politics and cringe when i think about how the likes of armin etc dominate the scene and dictate which direction producers under their stables should push musically. I remeber having a conversation with a current Top 10 dj who had fallen out with Armin about 5-6 years ago and it was having an effect on him being able to get his tunes on a lot of the radio shows and all other types of issues. Is that how the industry should work? It is the same bullshit that Armin himself had an issue with when Tiesto's management made festival organisers like Global Gathering sign contracts which stated that Armin could not play before Tiesto at any given festival and since then he has gone down a similar path of controlling the scene and who is allowed to come up the ranks.

Add to that the rigging of the dj mag polls. How farken stupid is it when you get situations like when Christopher Lawrence got booted out of the poll for the fake votes scandal when in the same year one of the acts who came in the top 6 - 7 paid djmag 10,000 euro to make sure they got a higher ranking. The biggest irony of all being that every single one of the other acts who had a high ranking had also done the exact same thing with the vote rigging.
