There's plenty of tutorials on youtube in getting the most out of effects etc from the S4 - there is plenty you can do, using the right effects with the right track...

To be honest, you're just going to get a lot of bullshit answers, and people paying out someone using Traktor without learning to use vinyl or CDJs first.

Still...

*just practise and figure it out, the S4 is pretty intuitive
*watch a lot of youtube videos, there's heaps of stuff
*learn to use loops, and well as dropping acapellas (other vocals, drumbeats and voice samples)
*watch other DJ's techniques when you're out clubbing or at mate's houses
*read up on your dance history and expose yourself to different genres (house, techno, trance, breaks, drum n bass, glitch, hiphop, garage, acid, hard dance, funk, downtempo)

*if you stick with it, get into vinyl and CDs (and producing!)

And finally - output>input i.e. good track selection and tight mixing will always win over choice of gear. Some of the best DJ's I know now use the s4 and related equipment, but they can also mix vinyl and CDs, but in the end they know how to rock a party and know their music.

Isn't djing about looking hip and cool around your peers?

Good luck with that. Have a couple of drinks, not too many though, and get to know your tunes inside out. I'd also plan and practice the first couple of mixes just you don't have to think too much initially.

I remember my first club gig - it was great fun.

Latest mix: strickly downtempo affair.

Use the record function on Traktor - I'd be useful to post the mix up, we can give you feedback (or tear it to shreds - hopefully not though!)

Good luck this weekend....

I got my first shot in a club about 6ish months after i started djing. It was a dj comp and i must have been half decent if they let me in. I was looking at the s4 but decided to go with the cdj/mixer option because i wanted to learn how to do it "properly". In the same time, ive seen guys who have been using controllers only being able to do basic mixing, less technical than i am with the cdjs and i think its what alot of guys are doing these days, learning how to fade between 2 tracks and thats it. If ur using a controller, take advantage of it, use the sync, but use all the extra functionality that comes with it to make something more than cross fading.

I had my first gig after about 6 months. But I'd learnt to mix on Citronic PD1s, the strength of the motor on the 1200 pretty much threw me across the room.

To put it short. I stunk.

Lessons in using a controller. Wow. I've heard it all.
