Just completed the Signal DLC last night. Was pretty good liked it a lot. The main drawback was the super lame final 'boss' battle.

Yeah but conceptually it was cool. I agree that it could have been done differently and could have been more effective.

Still can't wait for the 2nd bit of DLC and more Alan Wake. Such an amazing gaming experience.

Picked this up again this arvo, enjoying it a lot more now. I'm a fickle sumbitch with my gaming "moods".

Wake still annoys the living piss out of me, though; he's so fundamentally unlikeable. Hoping to warm to him. Just finished Ep 2.

Spoiler:
WTF is it with survival horror games and chainsaw psychos? Scared the piss out of me. Really dig the warped voices they use, very cool.

Barry is too fucking awesome for words. "My Eye of Mordor."

Up to Episode 6, it definitely picks up steam eh? Had my sister sat watching with a guide so been grabbing all the pages and thermoses and shizzle, think I missed a few in Ep 1 when I first started but I'll just grab those on Nightmare. Looking forward to going for those 3 chapter specific cheevos, too...the timed one, the don't die once one and the don't fire a shot one.

Some of the landscape shots have been been breathtaking, great engine but it's a shame it can't handle animation better.

"Fishing can be hazardous to your health!" Fuck those dudes in the yellow wet gear, fuck 'em right in the (fish) eye.

Finished last night. Cool but ultimately confusing ending...what a surprise!

Spoiler:
Rose holding the lantern but looking incredibly creepy and Nightingale standing behind her in the window. Then Wake saying, "It's not a lake, it's an *ocean*." Okayyyyy...

Gonna start on Nightmare soon, maybe go for the 3 level specific cheevos first. Doing the last ep without firing a shot will be fun!

I did the (section of) the last episode where you don't fire a shot ... not too difficult, and makes the gameplay more interesting.

Nice one, I'll be going for that on Normal at some point.

Decided to take a step back from it for the mean time, will come back at a later date. I'm all Waked out for now.

I've downloaded it but I'm not in the mood for it straight away after finishing. Obviously this makes me a mental.

So, I finally got around to starting this after buying it back on the same day I got Red Dead Redemption.

It's a lot better than I expected once I got into it! Finished Episode 3 last night. I really like the episodic format but... the episodes seem to get a bit too long for a good single sitting bite.

And there's a certain quality about the way it looks and feels that seems a lot like a first-party PS3 game. It's weird.

Yeah, they're not that episodic at all really. You need to invest a good couple of hours to get through each one without a break.

Whew. Nightmare difficulty done!

Three stinking coffee thermos still missing. So irritating that they didn't bother to at least tell you how many you'd got in each chapter. ****s.

I seriously enjoyed this game, even if it was stressful.

Cheers! Just 100% it then, too. Thankfully the thermos were fairly fresh in my mind so it didn't take too long to track the last few down.

I think I might wait until the The Writer DLC is out before jumping into The Signal. There won't be any more DLC coming after that either.

Fucking hell, man, nice one I started on Nightmare straight away after finishing on Hard but just didn't have it in me. Wake'd out, as you said!

Too much other shit to play as well, I'll get back to it at some point.

Of course!

I did crack the cheevo for defending the stage without dropping to low health on nightmare though. And I very nearly got the one for doing the first half of Episode 5 without dying on nightmare too. I accidentally walked off the helipad (derp!), because I couldn't see, and got wedged in the corner with Taken. So pissed off!

Is it tricky to get? Do you basically just cheese it through each area and avoid as many fights as poss?

Good work on that Elder God one on Nightmare, that was **** enough on Hard!

Yeah, you just leg it as often as possible. There are couple of spots you have no choice but to fight, but in most cases you can use flashbangs or the flare gun. There's only a few instances you really need to use standard guns.

It's not too bad really. After finishing the game on Nightmare, going back to Normal feels pretty easy. Getting thumped by 2 or 3 dudes at once still hurts though.

Just finished 'The Writer' last night and really enjoyed it. Not sure I completely followed the narrative, but the last half hour or so of gameplay was great.

Weird to release it years later. Though I'm interested to get it if it's cheap.

What's a ninja set-up?

Quote:

Though he couldn’t discuss specifics like release date, Remedy Executive Vice President Aki Järvilehto told Rock Paper Shotgun that the PC version will feature Steamworks and promised that “the experience of running it on a high-end PC, with a ninja set-up, [is] a big difference.”

Alan Wake is so good that date and platform shouldn't be relevant to your decision to play it or not.

Also the new Alan Wake, American Nightmares, is gonna be episodic so it makes sense to have it come out on Steam as well as PSN and XBLA.

Not moreso scary than it is atmospheric and creepy. It doesn't realise on cheap tactics to scare the shit out of you, instead goes more for the Silent Hill approach by creating atmosphere through sound and nightmare environment.

Fuck me. You guys playing this for the first time are in for such a treat with the first hour or so of play. I wish I could experience that all over again.

Beedles, speaking of Silent Hill...have you heard what the original art director of 2 has said about the HD remakes? He thinks they're shit. After seeing comparison shots, I have to agree. It's all too LIGHT. Fucking idiots.

Also, they've re-recorded the sound. Voices and all. Weak.

It's not that scary, more creepy than anything. There are some bits that are great, though.

If you want true terror on your 360, get Dead Space.

Bede - Creepy/atmosphere works for me! I actually prefer that to "jump scares", it's more subtle and immersive

Ian - Currently playing Dead Space! I'm up to Chapter 8. There are a lot of jump scares but it has great atmosphere too. The sound and music are great

Want: just so I can replay them. Achievements too.

DNW: Everything else. I heard about them adding new voices, and it turned me off straight away. Do not want bright lights. Want atmosphere.

Best use of sound in a game ever imo. Surround is used so fucking well!

Spoiler:
It doesn't rely on them, it has them towards the end, where you're going through the cabin and the flashes of the old woman appear. But for the most part it relies heavily upon sound and environment to create it's atmosphere.
