Every parent should have the right to kill their child up until they are of legal age and/or have left the nest.

It's an article written in an ethics journal by philosophers. Questioning and arguing about this sort of thing is what they're supposed to do.

'His goal was ''not to present the Truth or promote some one moral view. It is to present well reasoned argument,'''

...the paper was ''very theoretical''.'

Obviously I've missed it so maybe you could help me out, where's the irony?

FMD people are so quick to jump on board the hate bandwagon, instead of having a proper conversation about it.

I know it sounds fucked up, but why can't we at least debate it?

Because most people don't understand sentience, or the debates around sentience. What's more, many people abdicate progressive informed decision making to a set of 2000 year old mythologically based rules developed to control Byzantine empires.

Most people don't really bother to learn how much people who devote their lives to philosophy care about the human condition, suffering, meaning and a whole lot of other ontological and epistemological inquiries and ethical dilemmas. The typical reactionary responses to discussions on issues like this one always inhibit progress and the potential for a better life.

Is it any wonder, when the dominant icon in western religion is a man tortured and suffering a painful death?

I'd like to buy a crucifix please.

Excellent choice madam, now we have a couple of styles here. Would you like a plain one or one with a little man on it?

I completely agree. I don't believe that these authors have set out to argue that killing newborn infants is ok, rather they have set out to argue, ironically, that the abortion of an embryo or foetus should provoke the same reactionary responses that they were likely to receive in publishing this argument.

OK, well you probably should have been clearer in your first post. I'm not sure when I read the journal abstract that is what they are saying, but I'm going to read the whole article and get back to you.

Don't take our word for it, here's a quote from a happy customer who wished to remain anonymous "I had so many dead babies I simply didn't know how I was going to dispose of them all. Thanks to Baby Mulcher 3000 I was able to quickly remove the problem from my basement and, most importantly, clean up before anyone thought to look down there".

The authors explain why they are not discussing infanticide. They argue that the newborn can not "be considered a 'person' in a morally relevant sense" and that "it is not possible to damager a newborn by preventing her from developing the potentiality to become a person in the morally relevant sense" because she has not formed any aims yet.

My thoughts are I agree with the ethical logic used (which requires elaboration that I'm not going to post because it is tl;dr material) but I don't consider that ethical logic always necessarily subordinates matters of individual and social belief systems.

What I object to is the simplistic treatment of people who take on such challenging ethical isues which always results in a reduction to dogmatic ill-informed moralistic outrage.

I'm outraged in a strictly ironically non ironic sense

PS : I think a baby born with two heads and brain damage would make a tasty variant on Soylent Green. We could call it "Veal Soylent Green".

I'll start :

What's Gross?

Dead baby in a garbage truck

What's Grosser than that?

A garbage truck full of dead babies

What's Grosser than that?

One of them is still alive?

What's Grosser than that?

It's eating the other dead babies

What's Grosser than that?

You take it out, and it wants to go back for more

Newsflash: FEWSION GRASPS SIGNIFICANCE OF IRONY - In a historic moment recently on ITM, Fewsion came to grips with the concept of irony. "It was weird" Fewsion said. "I was in Sydney and like, talking to this guy and it was raining and he pulled a face and said, "great weather, eh?" and I thought "wait a minute, no way is it great weather". Fewsion then realised that the other man's 'mistake' was in fact deliberate. Fewsion, who joined ITM in 2003 and also confesses to having an imaginary friend, plans to use irony himself in future. "I'm like using it all the time" he said. "Last weekend I was grilling steaks and I burned them to sh!t and I said "hey, great weather!".

I dont see a problem with that. Post natal abortions should be legal up until age... 12. For those little shits that are guaranteed to amount to nothing but trouble.

Even God is cool with it. Although i'd prefer a slightly more humane method of dispersal than smashing them against rocks.
