How could this make money? they are not touring the acts either.

interesting question. in the US, marquee was the highest grossing club in terms of revenue last financial year. however, the hotel overall is making a huge loss.

last year the comso gave out $90m in comps, so its not a sustainable business model (saying that i hope we get comps next week haha). interesting to see how long it will run for and if the same model will work in sydney - i don't think there are as many ballers here than that who fly in and out of vegas.

rich people don't go clubbing........not here or in vegas. It doesn't matter how you promote a club, it's still a club and wealthy people have got better things to do than hang out with clubbers.

a well dressed person doesn't mean they are rich............it's not hard to pull off leather shoes and pants and shirt that you buy at Myer and look presentable.

don't buy the bullshit that you hear peddled around.

Ivy Bouncer Pleads Guilty To Bashing
Updated: 11:33, Tuesday March 27, 2012

A cage fighter has become the third bouncer to plead guilty to bashing a patron in the basement of the popular Sydney nightclub Ivy.

Emmanouil Ntaras, 30, pleaded guilty in the Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday to assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company.

Police allege Nicholas Barsoum, 19, was held down and repeatedly kicked, punched and gagged, suffering severe lacerations to his face that required hospital treatment in August last year.

Last week Jason Mendelow, 25, from Rockdale and Paul Fenukitau, 42, from Hurlstone park, pleaded guilty to the same charge.

The case will return to the District Court on March 30 when a date is expected to be set for a sentencing hearing.
these words fill this space.

It's not called "Volatile Rich", it's called Credit Cards.

It's not totally unusual to rock up to these places and have to wait an eternity at the bar because some ditzy whore is ordering a single glass of vueve on her credit card.

What I'm wondering is - don't the promoters of this place see a total shipwreck coming? Shit location detached from the rest of the CBD and stiff competition from other establishments attracting the crowd they're after. We're only a small city, and the novelty seems to wear off a little quicker than it used to these days. Hell, look at Home - HMS Shitwreck floating offshore at Cockle Bay Wharf.

I think a lot of people are expecting this place to fail in the end. By no means do I mean hoping it will fail, as I don't look at it like that. Just that based on being around and seeing Sydney nightlife over the last few years, do not expect this to be sustainable.

Will be surprised if it does continue to run for years. Only way I can see this happening - is if they let every electro kid who rocks up (who all will for these nights they've announced so far) in at the door.

I don't go to be in the VIP area.. I don't need big breaks, a big song with a buildup and lights and smoke.. all you need is a kickdrum and a good bassline. You don't need any of that other shit. Na, I'm not going for none of those reasons.. I'm just going for the music.

The promotors of Marquee don't know the Sydney clubbing scene. They're just doing what works in New York and Vegas and not realising that it won't here...just like all the other hot shot managers that have come over from that side of the world.

From what I heard from staff night, even staff were given grief from entering, dumb bouncers had to be told that they were staff and be let in.
Music was stupid loud, floors vibrating, along with the walls. Free drinks were the cheapest liquor (although to be fair, it was staff night and free), but if they end up serving cheapo vodka for $14 a piece, good fucken luck to them.
Oh, and to line up, you wait inside the casino, getting in is a pain in the ass, they scan you license, take a photo of you and fingerprint you as well, I can see this going well on normal nights lol.

As bad as a train wreck waiting to happen this looks like, I'd do the same thing if I had that much money to invest. Let's see, I can invest my money in bonds/stocks etc...or open a wank club, get better returns after 6, 8 or so months and then pull out. I know which I would choose. You guys really think these Americans give a damn what happens after a year to this place? It's all about quick returns, back in Toronto, they used to do the same thing, they'd come open some "brand" club, make quick returns, then leave the club to the local promoters for a slow death.

Really, there is a tremendous amount of money that goes into fitout, insurance and wages. I would be surprised if 6 to 8 months was enough turnaround time to secure a good return on investment.

And there's also a tremendous amount of idiots willing to pay absurd entry/drink prices in sydney. One thing I've learned about Sydney is that it has more than it's fair share of fools who part with their money easily, no different to Toronto or any other major city.

I think its the best way to ensure the standard of your clientile, the tables have been sold on reputation only. You would want to ensure people dropping that sort of change are well looked after with a "crowd" to their liking if you want repeat business.

Only people complaining at the end of the weekend will most likely be those turned away.

I always thought this was going to aimed purely at tourists, just like the Vegas one? The type of place ppl go once every few years, when they're visiting Sydney. Surely there are 2000 cashed up tourists in Sydney every week wanting a big night?

Re the staff night- who was working there if all the staff were partying?!?

you betcha, with my white belt, diamond chain and blinged out watch that so big you can use it as a table.

But in all honesty it would take something very special for me to even consider attending Marquee, and i am afraid that Afrojack, Paris Hilton, will.i.am and avicii just aint it for me.

it's part of the The Star and Marquee have leased the space from Star for which they will be paying considerable rent. Fitout will be a huge cost as will all the various insurances etc. If Marquee goes bust, The Star will either re-lease the space to another group or refurbish it for an alternative use. The space won't be 'left' to a local promoter. They won't be making their money back in 6-8 months

So does Mike Sosa's tragic illness.
