Not cheap when you add everything up, from memory…
Chest freezer (factory seconds) 260
4 Kegs 240
Taps, shanks, 4-way gas manifold, JG fittings & quick disconnects 420
C02 tank 180
Regulator 110
beer / gas lines 30
Drip tray 70
Timber + hardware 100
= $1400 or thereabouts, probably a bit more.

You can buy ready made kegorators, but they work out about the same $ by the time you buy the kegs, c02 + bits and bobs. Plus you dont have the added satisfaction of admiring your workmanship each time you pour yourself or your mates a beer.

Saw Goodieson beers in the fridge in my local bottle'o and picked up the Pilsner...

I'm pretty happy with it, tasty great hops flavour and well balanced, brewed in Mc Laren Vale.

Checkout Mad Brewers hoppy hefe. It's more of an IPA than a hefe, but styleguide nazism aside it's a pretty nice drop!

Doctors Orders Iron Lung is such a brilliant session beer. It's almost 7% but that's irrelevant - you can drink it until you fall over.

So If I am staying in Darlinghurst at the end of next week for a week or so, should I just go to the local Taphouse, or is it worth the walk over to Darling Harbour for the pumphouse?

what are the pumphouse patrons like? Seems expensive via the website.

The Mountain goat Craig's red ale is fucking brilliant.

The Nogone O imperial IPA is malty and sweet and brutal, at 10% I probably shouldn't have had a pint of it

Taphouse is a great pub, I can't recommend it more highly. Haven't been to the pumphouse

had it last night, wasn't really my thing... the hefe aspect was a bit too sweet and just felt a bit clashing

i'd just had the mountain goat rye ipa before it though so the hops probably didn't stand out as much as they would have

also had mikkeller beer geek breakfast - that was damn tasty

I have tried the vast majority of beers mentioned in this thread hence phoney's post. All of them sampled at The Local Taphouse.

Said venue is on par with The Wheaty.

Thoroughly enjoyed Hoppy Hefe (although if this cannot reignite my extinguished love of hefes nothing will), Iron Lung (wow!) and MG rye IPA. I would really like to sample Craig's red ale.

Looking forward to the next IPA Is Dead release from BrewDog, as well as their triple imperial IPA: Anarchist Alchemist. One of the Local boys said he grew tired of the same yeast strains.being used in all BrewDog ales, but that to me borders on the pedantic.

That was nice. The carbonation was so strange being done with nitrogen, I've never had anything so smooth. What was that other one we had? That was brilliant.

Okay, I am going to discuss matters that may very well be deemed as being impure by some - but imo it is no less impure than infusing beer with coffee beans, cacao or whatever else might happen to be flavour of the month.

Mixing cider with beer (no grenadine, thanks!).

Over the weekend I mixed White Rabbit White ale with Monteith's crushed apple cider. The aroma alone bowled me over (I seriously advise against drinking this outside for it will doubtless attract the attention of things that sting). I could hardly taste the cider at all once it belnded, even after adding more of it to lessen the beer bias. The end result was a symphony of flavours (with a peppery spice to top it off) that had me going back for more and more.

41% of the list when there are what, roughly half of the microbreweries in Australia in Victoria.

meh - I don't read things like that these days because in general I don't agree with them and they just end up irritating me.

The victoria centric thing isn't surprising though, the craft beer thing in Australia may have kicked off in WA, but simply by volume of breweries and the bloggers etc who are based in melbourne, it becomes the default home of the craft beer scene in Australia.

The feral rye-pa is a goodun, although I think I preferred the goat one.

Lack of Hargreaves Hill ESB is criminal.
