Sydney - Best Indian?
anyone recommend some good indians places round the city/east bit? Have a reasonable one down south, but wouldnt mind going with some work peeps who are poms and complaining about missing bricklane etc (which to be honest, is one of the things I miss from London the most)

I've always liked ispice as a quick and tasty takeway joint. There was one in Wynyard station and one around my area although either it moved or changed names, I dunno.

i thought akis' at woolloomooloo was pretty good when i went there.

mumbai nights in neutral bay (bit off) is delicious but theyve recently closed and moved shop to join up with a taste of india in mosman, which i havent been yet but they seem to always be easier. mosman is prob too far off though.

Rangoon racket club and nilgiris.

Mumbai nights is pedestrian in comparison to those two. Don't take poms there.

I'm fairly sure there's another older thread on this.

For the poms I'd suggest nilgiris as its nothing like a 'standard' Indian. You won't see many normal dishes, its a very regional restaurant. It's pricey but worth it.

Maya Tandoori on Cleveland St in Surry Hills is good. Took a friend from London there and he loved it - even makes an hour drive from his house some nights to get it

what is it with poms and their "cudge" ?

I remember when the barmy army was in sydney some of them were having their fav cudge flown in from england daily- So retarded considering we have superior fresh produce, our restaurants would at least be on par if not better also

I disagree. Indian is not a cuisine Australia as a 'standard level' does well. You really need to search for really good Indian, in London at least you pay a lot less for what I consider fantastic Indian.

^ I still think it's retarded to fly it over in a airplane innit guv... considering what other cuisines are on offer here (apart from curry)

ps I think Surjits on Parra rd is quite good

I agree its stupid 'fishin, but I find it hard to defend Sydney's Indian unless you're talking expensive and unique.

Grapsta, I've heard the same reputation.

I thought the curry in London was generally pretty awful tbh unless you got out of town and went to Tooting or something. Think we do it equally well, if not better.

I've never lived there so my sample size is only 4 places but where I've been taken out I was impressed with.

Don't get me wrong, there are some great places. A lot of shite to though too.

What does make the UK generally better though is that Indian is seen as a proper cuisine more so than in Australia, so you get serious chefs doing interesting things rather than just churning out the classics.

I would recommend Surjit's (both locations) and Aki's in Woolloomooloo. Also, Aki's sister restaurant, Abhi's on Concord Road.

My regulars are Aki's, W'loo or Malabar on Victoria St. Was back in the UK recently and drove through Bradford at lunch for a curry and it was amazing. Some seriously good curry houses there!

I went to University there and didn;t cook a meal at home for about a year at one stage. Delicious and cheap as chips.

As for Sydney, Delhi oh Delhi is alright and Faheems in Enmore is bonza.

My Indian mate says it's the best food outside of his Mum's kitchen.

Can't get a much higher recommendation than that!
