I was in Yosemite in October. One day I parked my car and started getting my stuff together. Alex Honnold pulled up behind me, got out of his van with just his shoes and chalk, said "Hey", and headed up to the cliff. Dude is indeed something of a badass.

I honestly feel sick watching those guys free solo, its something so far beyond what i would even consider.

Dean Potter on Separate Reality is the most awesome free solo I've seen. Such control.

^ Pretty decent article all in all. I used to hate BASE articles that portrayed jumpers as taking loads of risk. I've climbed down from more objects than I've actually jumped from and everyone else I've ever jumped with has been pretty conservative. They also don't take into account that you only usually hear about the jumps that go wrong, not the thousands that happen at 3am without anyone even knowing. Good to see a balanced piece for a change.

Um, he does. There's a video of him talking about how he's not that great of a climber compared to the guys who just do hard sport routes, but that his fame is built mainly around his soloing. Wait, here it is:

from about 4:20.

I've opted to do climbing instead of the gym, been going quiet often, getting my own harness soon.

been doing the indoor center in brookvale. very keen on checking out the st peters and st leanoards.

Hey mate WELCOME to the sport! I have been doing it for about 5-6 years now.. mainly stick to outdoor sport climbing ... but in terms of Indoors, ST PETERS is great.. a wide variety of graded climbs to quench your thirst.. but definitely get your own gear ... If your are tight with money I'd recommend going into climbing store.... trying out a few and buying direct online to save a couple of hundred depending on what your getting..

Let me know if you need any help !

By all means buy online, but going into a bricks and mortar store and trying stuff on first is a douchebag move. The store has to pay the staff who just helped you out and they have to bear the cost of keeping stock on hand for you to look at and/or try on. Don't be that guy.

i also prefer outdoor and think im better at outdoor however i dont do it as often (weather always fucks with my plans)

i have a general rule in thumb for buying online trying in store. no matter what it is, whether its climbing, diving, or normal clothes or whatever. at least spend some fucking money in store.

if the store is way overpriced compared to online i'll buy that stuff online, if its similar i'll buy it in store because they helped me out anyway.

If its within 15% i'll buy in store, 15 - 60% i'll purchase online but purchase something in store if they have helped me out, >60% difference, i'll happily try shit on and not purchase from a store that is blatantly ripping customers off. One of the shoe stores has started charging $30 for a shoe fitting which comes off the price of the shoe if you end up buying it, seems like a reasonable deal.

Seems totally reasonable. I'm not against buying online, I bought the majority of my rack online, back when cams were about 50 % cheaper in the US. If I'm buying shoes or a harness that I need to try on, I'll buy it locally and deal with the increased price. J-rod's "spend at least some money" policy is reasonable too.

The shoe thing works as Wiggle is still $80 or so cheaper to purchase Nimbus or Kayano's from even after you've paid the $30, i cant imagine the shops would make alot more than $30 on a pair of shoes so everyone kind of wins in this case.

Jarrard what's the Rock House like for solo climbers? Do they have staff there that belay for you or do you need to find someone on the day to partner with?
