Some pano shots from the iPhone processed using CS Photomerge - Autostitch on the iPhone was doing wacky things with them...

Polarizer for portraits?

Should be fine (ie. neutral) as far skin tones go, and may actually assist in holding back the severity of a bright sky / reflective foliage to minimise a harsh, contrasty scene and bring detail out of the shadows...

...except portaits are typically shot at +85mm focal lengths where the sky or background is usually not dominating a scene.

So unless one's creating arty, wide angle fashion-esque shoots on a mid-summers day, I'd say the polarizer ain't on the 'must have' list for portraiture, but hey, it won't hurt it, and the 2-stop light penalty may actually be a plus to open up the aperture.

ive shot very few portraits at 85, even less above that. am i doin it wrong? lol i dunno about arty but im def. in the wide angle daytime scenario shots.
i was more wondering about the skin tones and maybe controlling the bg a bit which youve kindly covered

I'd have thought skin would look weird without any tiny reflections....
I guess you could use it at a partial setting though. /shrug. Never used one.

Nice one Carl, welcome to best sub-forum on the site.

Quick Pano question, what's the de facto standard ratio for panoramas?

you know what, i always hear ppl mention that, to clone out stuff from holiday photos. to some extent i agree and i have to say i did think about it but i think it adds to its own uniqueness and it reminds me of what it was like when i was there, that being construction was everywhere. it also isnt really that distracting. if it makes you feel any better i did clone out a crazy bum that i was bit too scared to ask to move out of the foreground

comparing some of my old photos from london 06 to the ones i took last year were pretty different, if i had got my clone on theyd look almost identical

This is a Panorama from the old Geelong B power station. Kind of looses all the sense of depth it has when it is so small. Oh well...

there's no one button way of stitching photos and having seamless joins. They always require attention & cloning afterwards

i use photoshop

lately i havent been doing much in post...
i think this is a good thing, like i am liking the way the photo looks out of the camera, not needing to fiddle with it to make it look how i wanted

that or i am lazy as shit

I think more black on the bottom wouldn't be a bad thing at all - would balance it all out i reckon

This is no love song and it serves no use, but if you want to sing along to some verbal abuse

it's been too long since I played around with stitching images, I can tell where that one was. Should have taken 3 photos rather than the 2. And is just me or is the horizon not level on that?

the horizon is slightly askew but the main problem is the lens distortion that needs correcting. that's why the horizon curves off on each side and dips slightly in the middle.

you need to correct lens distortion before stitching

It's lots off.
If I shoot a pano, I segment every 30degrees.

thanks guys

that was using autostitch and i've noticed it adds a lot of curve to the shots, need to be not so lazy and get more overlap

You can fix it (mostly) with a quick warp (Edit -> Transform -> Warp... Photoshop)
If you handhold a pano and don't pan horizontally, you'll notice it rises on one end -- warp it back in!
