The Breakfast Club presents its third instalment of monthly parties on Friday 20th April, bringing you the diverse and talented Midland for an exclusive extended set.
Midland made his 2010 debut alongside longtime friend Pearson Sound aka Ramadanman with their anthemic track "Your words matter". The pair wove, defied and played with a number of genres and, in doing so, Midland laid a clear foundation stone for his vision of how electronic music could be.
Although house, techno and dubstep are being woven ever more tightly together, few producers have the genuinely unbiased output of Midland. His music spans Washed Out, Stateless and Caribou remixes; house, garage and bassier fare (sometimes on the same EP); and it gets played—and praised by—Sasha and Braiden alike. Accordingly, the Leeds-based producer's DJ sets are just as unpredictable. "I love Lawrence, Bibio, Radiohead," says Harry Agius, enthusiastically. "And Workshop stuff, and Laid Records, plus I've grown up with a revered view of the R&S horse."
It is a sound that is rooted in House and Techno but with the rumbling low end of Dubstep and wide screen experimentation of classic Electronica. His contribution to the esteemed Fact Mix Series further demonstrated this diversity and wit, bringing in influences from across the sonic and musical board. His subsequent releases on Phonica and More Music as well as remixes for Ninja Tunes, Werk Discs, Southern Fried and PMR have gained fans from many different avenues of electronic music. With wide ranging and solid support from djs including Sasha, Mary Anne Hobbs and Giles Peterson as well as further forthcoming solo and collaborative work with artists like Pariah and Ben Westbeech, Midland's intriguing, offbeat story has only just begun.

SBH: I read a trip to Spain is accountable for moving you away from drum n bass and helping you find your own sound. Tell us a little about this transitional period.



Midland: It was just that really, a transitional period, it felt like being 15 and discovering jungle for the first time, but this time it was house/techno and electronica. I was still djiing and doing a radio show at the time playing drum and bass so felt like I was being disloyal but it had to happen really, I had lost my passion for the music and it was mainly due to the limiting nature of its tempo.



SBH: When did your profession become making music instead of serving drinks? Take us back to the moment when you knew your career as a producer had started.



Midland: Well at the beginning after signing the 12” with Ramadanman I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do with my life, I was picked up by Stealth Management and signed a 12” with Phonica but it took time for everything to pick up and filter through. I think it was October 2010 when I decided to quit my bar job and try and focus on it full time. The next couple of months were so tight money wise that I constantly doubted my decision. Especially as all my university mates were getting real jobs and getting on the ladder so to speak. Things really started to happen around the beginning of 2011 when I got a new agent and gigs/interest picked up. It was and is still a bit mind boggling. You can never take for granted how amazing it is not to be waking up in the middle of the night worrying about how you are going to pay rent.



SBH: Song writing seems to be very much an expression of emotion in your production. Tell us how things usually start out when you sit down to write a track



Midland: The start and end point of a track is never the same. Quite often I will just sit down and make a synth patch or find sounds and they won’t fit in with the track I’m working on, but will save them and use them later on. Arrangement is the thing that takes most time, so after getting all the ideas down it’s a matter of making sense of them and laying them out in an order that will interest the listener and more importantly tell a story.



SBH: Tell us about the placement ep and some creative approaches you took in making the tracks.



Midland: All the tracks were written at the same time, and this was a conscious decision, so in one sense there is a sound to them, more aesthetically than in the ideas. When it comes to the inspiration behind them its anyone’s guess, although I do remember having a bit of a French fiter house binge and then writing “What We Know” shortly after [laughs].



SBH: We have had you over in Australia before and we are thrilled to have you back! What are some new things we can expect on your front at Chinese Laundry?



Midland: Well last time I played I was warming up for James, and so in that sense it was about building the crowd up for him, and also the crowd were there to see him really. This time I am on my own so it’s a chance to really play what I want try take people on a trip.

About midway through 2010 an EP was released on Aus Music by Ramadanman with a newcomer called Midland. At the time David Kennedy was a hotly tipped producer whose releases had been causing considerable buzz, and this EP gave further weight to his credentials while immediately boosting those of the unknown Midland. The new kid on the block was one Harry Agius, who quickly established himself through a series of releases and remixes as part of a new wave of producers who were happy to straddle the lines between house, techno and bass music. To be fair, Agius’ output has mainly focused on the first two of those genres, though the association with bass music through his first release with Kennedy would stick with him for some time. In advance of his Fabric gig this Saturday, May 26th, Little White Earbuds caught up with Agius for an in-depth chat ranging from the ins and outs of good press releases to making a difference through social work, producing music that stays true to what you want to do while being aware of public expectations and the importance of keeping vinyl pristine.
