James Zabiela (UK)
Knowing what a great track should sound like - and the place it can be taken by warping and twisting it - is James Zabiela's forte. Layering different sounds with the aid of two Pioneer CDJ-2000s, a Pioneer EFX-1000, Korg Kaossilator, MIDI controller and a laptop, his hands and ears don't let up for a second, leaving many punters feet a-moving and mouth a-gap. Zabiela’s demands for such a kit wherever he spins is a reminder that he's one of the scant few DJs who's pushing things forward in 2012. James' style is trippy, bleepy and deeply - nay, downright - groovy. Oh, and watch out for a few gnarly basslines along the way, those nasty, dirty sounds are a part of JZ's signature now. Scratches, loops, and fluttering chord changes are all par for the course in a Zabiela set.
Since being snapped up by Sasha's Excession agency, he’s taken on Eastern Europe, Australia, South America and the US of A, while still finding time to record well-received CDs for Renaissance and unleash a string of fine remixes along the way. Royksopp, Ladytron and progressive artists Spooky are just some of the few that have been under the Zabiela scalpel. Pushing the envelope while still learning to cope with a real-life fan base and life on the other side of the record counter, it’s unlikely that James Zabiela will be taking a breather anytime soon. There are further late niteries like Tribal Sessions and Matter to entertain and regular slots in Romania and Budapest to attend to, not to mention five-hour sets in front of 6,500 screaming punters at Moonpark in Buenos Aires. No wonder Sasha refers to James as the guv'nor, And it’s still just the beginning.
Alex Niggemann (GER)
Producer, DJ and label owner (Souldfooled), his search for something bigger and better led him to leave his hometown of Dusseldorf for Europe's epicenter of electronic music, Berlin. It was here studying audio engineering he landed a job working for the legendary DJ-T which lead to his first release, a remix of Booka Shade’s ‘Darko’ on the influential Get Physical label alongside Tiefschwarz and Radio Slave.
However it wasn’t until Marc Poppcke, friend and current label partner decided to submit one of Niggemann's tracks to a label that led to his first original release. ‘Assign Me’ debuted on Sportclub in 2008 and releases on Meerestief, Micro.fon, Moonpool, 8bit, Be Chosen, Freak Waves, BlaBla, Tsuba, Poker Flat and Supernature have since followed and in 2009 he was positioned 8th on Resident Advisor's "Top 20 Charted Artists".
Alex Niggemann's style has without doubt that indefinable quality. Uninterested in sub-genres, Alex likes to describe himself as a House DJ. He produces and plays whatever suits him at the moment: from dark tech house to vocal- heavy house music and it never seems to miss the target with club crowds all over the world.
George Fitzgerald (UK)
The last few years have been as experimentally freewheeling as any in the history of electronic music, and there are few finer examples to support that argument than this London-born and bred beatsmith.
George Fitzgerald first appeared on our radar with his “Don’t You” cut on Scuba’s Sub:stance mix. Fast-forward a year and he’s got his first release on Hotflush, dropping the future garage soul of “The Let Down” and a luscious dubtech gem in “Weakness” plus releases on his own imprint ManMakeMusic. His productions combine exceptional style and grace both the warmer, melodic sides of house and garage with the more heated, pounding drum patterns of dubstep and techno.
All the best producers have hallmarks, and Fitzgerald’s are evident in his measurement, his awareness of light and space and his use of searing chord lines. His is the lightness that makes the darkness, seem darker.
