The Food Truck Thread. (Wheresmyburrito?)
I was going to call it the Sydney Food Truck Thread.. But food unites us all in this forum. All are welcome.

FOOD TRUCKS COME TO SYDNEY

Link: http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/B...FoodTrucks.asp

A fleet of 10 food trucks has been chosen to deliver on something Sydneysiders told the City they want - more quality food at all hours.

A food truck is a mobile eatery that travels to different locations in the city. A panel of food experts chose the successful operators in a selection process that included a cook-off challenge.

The 10 successful operators will serve up exciting new food options including modern Australian from a former Tetsuya’s sous chef, steamed yum cha, and veggie burgers from a truck shaped like a barn – complete with herb garden on the roof.

The operators chosen are:

• Agape
• Al Carbon
• Bite Sized Delights
• Burger Theory
• Cantina Mobil
• Eat Art Truck
• Let’s Do Yum Cha
• Taco Truck
• Tsuru
• Veggie Patch

More than 30 hopeful operators lodged applications when the City sought expressions of interest last year, following extensive consultation on the city’s night-time economy.

The hopefuls went through a rigorous testing process that included looking at their business plans and background, and compliance with health and waste management codes.

The last step was a taste test, where contenders had an hour to cook meals from their proposed truck menu and were judged on the taste, their overall concept and their complete menu.

The operators can now fit out their trucks, which will start to hit the streets in coming weeks.

The City is lodging development applications for 13 sites across the Local Government Area where the trucks can operate. Likely sites include Belmore Park and Customs House Forecourt and Sydney Park.

The 10 operators will be the only ones with permits to use the sites, and they will be required to move between locations during the night. The trial will run for a year, and a detailed analysis will follow.

Opening hours will depend on the location and when existing restaurants and cafes close. A smartphone app being developed by the City will soon provide a real-time map, links to food truck menus and other details.

What you need is a van NYC style.

Call it the Midtown Muncher or something, and sell New York dogs, hoagies, pulled pork sliders, philly cheese steaks, pizza pie, pretzels and cupcakes.

Im surprised there arn't more around.... when I was younger I flirted with the idea of a mobile pizza van "the pizza man van". I doubt you could just pull up anywhere in the cbd and start banging out food on the footpath.

Been so excited about this getting up and running.

They mentioned Sydney Park as a 'parking point'. Would be so great to ride over with a bunch of friends sans picnic gear and be able to grab a great feed.

They should all rock up for dub in the park.

Second, according to http://theburgeradventure.com/top10-2011/ - pretty solid!

+1 for Taco Truck love...freaking amazing!

I do wonder how they'll survive in the winter months though, it's one thing to head ride to the local park and kick on a blanket for your often up to 1 hour wait fot TT or BBK when it's a lovely evening, but in winter?

Perth used to have a good one - although it wasn't mobile.

It was called Nick's Hotdogs.

Twas an institution.

But it was deemed "too ugly" by the city council and was subsequently shut down. Naturally unsightly tents peddling Foxtel subscriptions and stalls luring in unsuspecting people in for blood donations* via the question "what blood type are you?" are considered perfectly fine.

* I have no issue with the noble act of donating blood.

So has anyone else tried the two which are up and running so far?

I thought EatArtTruck was a bit of a wank. I had the pulled pork & mustard slaw, which was not bad but felt overpriced.
Cantina Mobil on the other hand does a pretty good burrito & taco. Both the chicken and slow cooked beef were damn tasty. Looking forward to the others starting up.

....personally $55 to eat food truck food and you'll have to pay for drinks on top of that sounds like just the sort of thing that's really starting to piss me off about Sydney food.....so many people charging crazy prices because this country has gone foodie-mad and they can get away with it.

$55 to eat street food in some dive on Canterbury road? It's not even BYO you have to drink their Mexican, Asian and local b̶e̶e̶r̶ bland adjunct lagers. I hope they go broke.

I strongly suspect that Sydney council would be charging these guys a hefty fee for operating these things which probably contributes to higher overheads thus pushing the price of the food up in comparison to what I understand is a largely guerrilla operation in the States.

I hope this factor doesn't see this fabulous initiative die in the arse.

I've seen the eatarttruck. Although not super cheap, the menu looked delish. Seems a very very odd move to roll these things out just at winter kicks in as well. I'd want my first 6 months of business to be a cracker, not struggling for a profit. I'd totally stop and snack on my truck food in the park/square if the weather was warmer but at the moment, no chance.

Have my eye on the kingfish ceviche and spatchcock confit when the weather is nicer and I stumble upon said truck again.

^^ a lot of the articles I've read seem to indicate that the SCC are right behind these guys and indicate they are actively helping them... that's not to say they're giving them a free ride, but it would seem counterintuitive to spend the amount of money they have in publicising the thing then watch them all fall on their face.

Krafty if you're comparing these to the typical burrito truck in the US then there's no comparison as they're not a foodie thing at all, they're cheap convenience food. The food trucks here seem to be aimed more mid-market, do I'd never expect them to be super-cheap. Hopefully it's like Bracko says and they're getting the necessary support from the council.

queue simpsons youtube [which is blocked for me]

the "small bars" act/licence which the state government introduced and the SCC wanted includes business planning meetings which applicants must attend to show competence in managing a small bar and small business successfully. This seems to be in the same vain... so fingers crossed.

+1 again for Melbourne's Taco truck, taco's on par with Mamasita and Senorita's and $12 for 2 taco's + fresh/home made corn tortilla chips is more than resonable really.

Had Beatbox Kitchen last night, it was no where near as good as last time I had it...I remember thinking last time "Hmmmm, tough choice, this or Huxtaburger..." not last night, Huxtaburger all the way

^ Not such a bad thing, late night food options in Sydney are truly terrible. Hopefully it encourages a street food culture (a guy can have high hopes right?)

Hey, there are some pretty good kebab stores out there. You do have a point though, everywhere that does a decent meal is closed by 10pm in Sydney, and if its open its not affordable. The closest thing you have to a decent feed is oportos really...

No I'm not comparing them to the average American Burrito Truck SM, I'm comparing them to the gourmet food truck movement that originated on the west coast and is moving across the states.

And I agree regarding support from the council. They do seem to be behind them. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt on their strategy but personally, I'd have been launching the project in the summer. You would have a greater chance of getting people to congregate for longer in public spaces therefore a greater chance of them spending money. The volume of people moving around the city in the evenings is much higher in the summer. I'd be capitalising on that to give the project momentum. 17 years in Marketing tells me that but that's not what has occurred so my thoughts are irrelevant.

maybe they're getting their act together in time for summer...iron out any mistakes in winter ...although more likely is red tape delays till now.

speaking of those WEst Coast gourmet food trucks...is anyone gonna do korean tacos..thats what I want....or a food truck that just does David Chang pork buns

Same deal with souvlaki in Melbourne, so much better than the dog food doners up here.

i find it hard to believe that all the kebab shops in one city would be so much better than the kebab shops in another city.....how could this be ??? did all the kebab cooks in adelaide / melbourne learn from the same ninja kebab master ??? Surely theres great ones and shit ones in all cities. I've had awesome kebabs all over Sydney just recently had really good ones in Bondi , Marrickville ...and just yesterday found a freakin awesome Lamb kebab cooked on a skewer over charcoal in a little shop in Eastlakes that had amazing chilli sauce and was massive for $9
