You still need a powered usb hub to connect shit to it but potentially awesomesauce media player you can literally stick to the back of your tv

No reason it couldn't be a basic NAS/media player all-in-one (provided you are happy running external HDDs and dont need RAID etc).

The specs are pretty much on par with my $300 NAS.

was reading if you have a powered usb hub you can run pretty much anything off it. It runs linux so if there's a driver it'll work

Pre-orders reportedly go live in just under an hour. I think they're only offering the ethernet version first, for $35. (Non-ethernet version is still $25). I'm going to have a stab at getting in. Expecting server crashes.

That would be fine. I believe the USB port is standard spec, so it should supply 500mA like any PC port.

Yeah I actually didn't see it coming once they announced RS and Farnell were handling it. They're only two of the biggest component suppliers on the planet. So much nerd rage on twitter right now.

The $35 model has been in the works for ages, and is being released first because the community wanted it. The $25 model comes later, no network and only one USB port. That's the one designed for school kids really (which is what this project is for).

But yeah, this element14 website is excruciating. The product is featured on their home page: http://au.element14.com/ ..it says pre-order now, but clicking it takes you to their community site with no order button, and no way to do much else without signing up. And trying to sign up throws an 'unexpected error'. calm blue ocean

This page lists it at a more reasonable $38 (why there are two listings IDK). You can 'register your interest', which means you have to register. That process works, but that login doesn't apply to the community page. OBVIOUSLY.

I wasn't even mad at not getting an order in today. Now I'm mad because their site is so shit.

[edit] Apparently RS isn't selling at all until the end of the week. That probably won't include Australia.

wait how does USB power work (n00b electronic engineering dropout question incoming)

model B is rated at 700 mA over MicroUSB while the USB 2.0 spec maxes out at 500 mA, does that mean the unit itself uses all the 700 mA and could hopefully draw up to a whole extra amp to fully power 2 USB devices? and so anything in that 700-1700 mA range is obviously above the standard USB 2.0 limit but usually those mains->USB plugs can do more than 500 mA which is why some phones can charge faster off one of those than a PC?

That's a good question. The power rating of the board should (IMO) take into account anything it has to deliver via USB. But if that was the case here, the power rating of the model B would have to be 1amp to allow for 2xUSB, plus whatever the board needs. Looking at the model A, if they've allowed 500mA for the single USB port, the board would be drawing... 0mA. So I don't think they've included an allowance for USB at all. Maybe powered hubs will be necessary after all.

I'll see if there's an answer in the forums.

if you bridge pins 2 & 3 (the middle two) on a usb wall charger or cigarette lighter charger then phones will draw 1A instead of the 0.5A
wall chargers generally already have it bridged. Most lighter chargers don't.

My transformer prime usb wall charger puts out something like 2.1A so no idea what voodoo they got going on in there. It takes DAYS to charge via PC USB port

Trying to get a clear answer on this via google cache, ugh. Here's the vibe I'm getting:

- 700mA is a 'nominal' figure for the spec sheet
- The power input (microUSB) has auto-cutout protection at 1000mA
- They chose microUSB because of all the phone chargers that can deliver 1000mA
- The standard USB ports can deliver 500mA individually, but the total power rating of the board doesn't allow you max both at once, obviously.

In practical terms: You'd probably run a keyboard + mouse straight off one port, using the other for a flash drive or wifi/BT adapter. Anything more than that, powered hub.

Yeah they've only licensed the two codecs. Others will be installable but I don't know about HW acceleration. See what the community comes up with I guess.

Thought I scored a deal at my local pc stores parts bin with a c2d e6750 and gigabyte p35-ds3 for $30 today.. got back here, sifted through the piles of old/spare ram in my office and realised I'd only had ddr and ddr3, no ddr2 .. mutha ******.

Now back to $25 computers.

Got an email from element14, mine is shipping in about a month.

So I picked it up yesterday. Criminy it’s small. Set up a card with Raspbian, booted without issue, got as far as the login prompt, went to bed. I think I’ll call it Les.

First thing I found was that it's very awkward without a case. It's so light that you have to place it where the HDMI cable wants to sit, iykwim. So I need to get it cased up before doing anything else.

Once that job is done, dunno. The original plan was an XBMC frontend but it's not going to be perfect for that task. At first I'll probably just fool around seeing what emus and other little apps I can install/compile. Maybe see if I can get any Pandora software running on it. Later on I wouldn't mind getting one of these for some GPIO fun:
