Cowan won't last much longer with Khawaja and Hughes waiting in the wings to get back in. He just doesn't have IT. Despite Hughes faults, he'll score more runs than Cowan and will actually be entertaining to watch once he's ironed out his deficincies. Even with his deficincies he's better to watch than Cowan.

Khawaja is a lazy prick and won't be back in for some time, especially with the attitude he has.

I can see a bit of this. He has had the opportunity to really go back to the sheffield shield and work on his technique and get runs,. The times ive seen him, he's struggled and got out with silly shot selection. He will need another year of solid runs now I recon

^ interesting, missed that one... reading between the lines it sounds like he's a lazy **** but I'm surprised anyone would have that temprament if they've been able to make it to the most elite level.

I reckon Cowan's worth persevering with. But it's a long stretch until the November test series. If anything were to change I'd imagine Watson would come back to the top and they'd give George Bailey or Peter Forrest a look in in the middle order/first drop.

Surely you've realised that Hughes is a busted flush and that if the goal is to regain the Ashes, he is not the solution?

Shiv Chanderpaul brought up 10,000 Test runs last night. Huge achievement.

Edit: just looked it up, he's the 10th player to reach the milestone. Tendulkar is on 15,470, more than 2,000 ahead of Ponting and Dravid.

Even more trivia: Jaques Kallis has the highest average of all the players who've made more than 10,000.

I did some maths the other day, for Punter to catch Sachin in the same amount of innings (that also means for Sachin to not make any more runs), he would have to average 71 per wicket until then. Not likely

And Gilly and Langer and... you get the picture

I hate how all the Indian, WI and Sri Lankan fans claim that Punter isn't as highly rated because he had the awesome team to back him up. Mates, he was a HUGE reason the team was so awesome. The amount of times he came in when either Hayden or Langer had gone out cheaply and piled on runs was amazing. His ability to build partnerships with any player is great too. He also has the best strike rate of all the 10,000 club afaik. And he is the best 4th innings player of the group.

Those criticisms are all hot air because they can't be justified with sustained excellence over years, there's too many variables for an individual player to not be found out over that period of time. They'd say the aussie batting wasn't that great because they never had to verse Warne and Mcgrath, which is a ridiculous statement because they only versed them one series out of eight/nine. The fact is it was a world beating team because both our batsmen and bowlers were the world's best.

What time does play start?

Also when did versus become a verb I need to go back in time to fix that?

And they worked bloody hard to get there. I get the feeling that the current crop are a little bit lazy. There is always reports about how Punter trains the hardest, but I reckon other than Warnie, everybody trained like Punter.

Def wouldn't say fitter esp with how many are breaking down. There were no slouches on that team besides Lehmann for a while. McGrath personified fitness, never injured. Hayden was the fittest of any Aussie batsmen, that century in the UAE in 50 degree heat proved that. Tougher, fitter, more skilled all of them.

Injuries mean you're not fit. Being able to run a long way on a treadmill doesn't make you fit, it's handling the rigours of match intensity that makes a sportsmen fit.

So everyone who gets injured is not fit? I might do a marathon on the treadmill, that makes me fit right?

It does. But for a sportsmen there's also the aspect of their craft and being able to execute it. E.g. Shane Watson wasn't fit for the purposes of bowling because he had bulked up too much and always broke down, nobody would have described him as a fit player then. Our pace attack is skilled but fragile, and the fittest batsmen are veterans.

There was a time where the Aussie player team sheet pretty much never changed. No one got injured. Would be good to get a stat on that.

Bit of a broad statement. I only hate them if they're one eyed cricket fans.

Because it's a one day series and Johnson has, despite his incredibly average test performances, actually been one of our best one day bowlers over the last few years. Certainly he's a better one-day bowler than Hilf or Siddle. It's not like he's back in the test squad.

Weather permitting we should wrap up the series 3-0 (Edgbaston and Trent Bridge are ideally suited to Anderson and Broad at this time of year).
