Hi everyone, here's my first post in this forum. I'll start with my most recent effort as it's a Detroit and Chicago techno set, and Derrick May is in the country. Hopefully it'll get a few of you in the mood. All of my mixes are posted on Soundcloud, so I'll paste a link below and also paste my 'blurb' and tracklisting with it.

I-94 Detroit To Chicago 01 - Techno Soul

Techno from Detroit and Chicago, but with a feeling.

I'm not normally one for categorizing music by geographical location, I tend to prefer Ian Brown's maxim that "it's not where you're from, it's where you're at". I'll make an exception here though, because of the enormous influence of a bunch of (largely) black teenagers from Michigan and Illinois who soaked up white euro electronic music in the 70's and 80's and their own indigenous electronic funk sounds and expanded beyond them with their increasingly proficient use of analog synths and drum machines. They created something completely new in both structure and sound. Eventually, their brand of music to dance to was exported (back) to the Europeans, and also to other shores, and then expanded upon by new ears there. Whilst all of that happened, there generally remained a purity to the techno that comes from Detroit and Chicago, it isn't overly oriented to a crowd fuelled by drugs. In fact, a lot of the producers from that part of the world eschew that sort of thing. It tends to remain, as Derrick May commented "like George Clinton and Kraftwerk caught in an elevator, with only a sequencer to keep them company". Synth strings and snares rather than pounding bass and juno hoovers.

The interaction of producers between Chicago, with it's largely gay New York disco inspired house music and Detroit with it's robotic euro inspired electro and techno was evident very early. Derrick May has spoken of his, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson's late evening drives to listen to Ron Hardy play at the Music Box. Kevin Saunderson is a native of Brooklyn, and often journeyed to listen to Frankie Knuckles (another native of New York) play at The Warehouse and then The Power Plant. Early acid house producers from Chicago sought influcence from Detroit techno to distance house from disco. Playlists at clubs in both cities included both house and techno records. While many (most?) techno records from Chicago and Detroit are purposely robotic or futuristic, it's inevitable that some will include at least a modicum of soul given the exposure to disco and house - a feeling.

That's what this is. My take on techno with a feeling. After a listen you may think that that's a load of old tosh. At any rate, there will be more music from Illinois and Michigan to follow, eventually...

Well I tried to suggest that ITM create a Balearic subforum in the 'All About The Music' forum. Naively I created the thread in the 'Forums>General Interest>General' area, where it was hijacked and trashed. Apparently inthemix is more about lifestyle than music, and the 'All About The Music Forum' isn't relevant. Apparently.

Well, after eight years of vinyl, compact discs and Serato I have been mucking about with Ableton and produced my first ever recorded mix. Well the first one of presentable audio quality at any rate - I've got the hardware required for that now as well. Thanks Focusrite.

Is Balearic music “pop records that sound good on pills” or a "jumble sale of crap masquerading as gold"? I think that it's any old tune, as long as it has the 'right sort of Meditteranean feel'. You be the judge!

So here it is. A downtempo, mixed and blended collection of tunes with a big nod to Illes Balears and the Balearic dj's like Alfredo Fiorito and José Padilla. Best suited to the beach in Sant Antoni de Portmany, as the sun is setting, with lashings of San Miguel. I think. I've never been there you see.

Dub, reggae, house, soul, electronica, drum and bass and flamenco guitar. Enjoy. More to come.

Righto, here's the second part of what I intend to be a healthy and long-lived Balearic series.

Is this just a convenient way of indulging some ambition to cobble any old thing together and attempt to make it seem credible by giving it that 'Balearic' tag? Maybe, but not really... though I must admit that there has been a degree of expedience in my approach to both of the sets in this series thus far - there just isn't that much music out there at these low tempos and with this sort of 'Meditterranean' feel. I've tried to construct something that works and feels right, although with a limited set of tracks to choose from.

Which is pretty much situation that the early Ibiza dj's found themselves in. As Jose Padilla states in the djhistory article, “I think it was because we were brought up like that, but also there was not much choice. Now you can specialise in Detroit techno or deep house or whatever, then you had to play with what you had. We had to play so many hours that we have to play different tracks to make the session happen."

Why is any of this worthy of attention? Because it's fun, and we need fun. Some of you may remember the overly serious attitude and approach that characterised the majority of music in the 1980's. Before the end of that decade the Ibiza dj's delivered a refreshing sense of fun to a boozed up, drugged up and sexed up (read 'relaxed') holiday crowd, some of whom were inspired enough to take it home with them after the hangover had disappeared. In the words of Bill Brewster "The arrival of the Balearic beat, reinforced by the unstoppable force of acid house (more on that another time), altered the direction of British clubbing and, indeed, British youth culture, for the next 15 years. But, while it was Balearic that was the launching pad, the idea of playing eclectic sets in the same manner as Alfredo soon waned as the new house regime began." It started eclectic, and fun. Maybe it needs to go back there and start again?

Anyway, there's a few twists and surprises here. Go with the flow and don't get too serious about it. You can't possibly chin-stroke to a set that includes The Cure, deep Detroit techno, south London hip-hop, Tears For Fears samples, Martin Luther King samples, dub piano(!), trip hop, Chrissie Hynde, an abstract harmonium track and, erm, Simply Red.

As a point of interest, I have realised that in a kind of cool way this seems to have arranged itself into three 'mini sets' of 80's and 90's Balearic classics interspersed with more contemporary tracks (refer to tracks 7-10 and 12-14 with the last three tracks being straight out of 1989, right at the 'height' of things).
