Clive Palmer, or the Fat Man takes over the world
So Clive is going to build Titanic II, get the Chinese Navy to escort the maiden voyage, and in his spare time run against Wayne Swann at the next election.

Gotta love a fat rich prick with balls the size of his brain.

Put him in a Jabba the Hut suit, do that and I'll give him a pass on the taxes.

I almost want him to get preselction and win it for the comedy of it all..

Queenslanders have already voted for Katter, Joyce, Hanson and that precocious little shit Wyatt Roy in previous elections.... don't put it past them to vote for this bloke who is clearly on another planet.

Well said, Palmer certainly fits into the 'something or someone' category.

It's a Donald Trump style move imo. Make a run with no serious intention of winning, but force the media and the politicians to give you a soap box and answer all your questions.

The only difference here is that Gillard & Swan arent clever or witty enough to turn it into a comedy spectacle a la Obama.

Agreed. He has the affable Australian persona down-pat and the hard-work and prosperity bromides in the bag, as witnessed by his performance on Q&A's Climate Debate last week, and he's obviously got intelligence to get to be in his business position, but this doesn't exclude him from being mad as the Katter all at the same time.

Many people are successful through brute force and determination combined with zero ethics but I guess you need some intelligence. I don't think cunning = intelligence. I think people often use cunning to mask a lack of intelligence.

And yes the Q&A debate... his position was incredibly weak but he has the storyline down pat.

And phoneyhuh, I tend to agree with you. On the other hand Rinehart and Palmer really want the power to control everything and I wouldn't put it past Palmer getting into parliament. Queenslanders have no problem electing their resource owners into government and a lot of them probably really think he wants to help them.

What Rinehart and Palmer really want is to be able to employ migrant workers on terrible conditions and pay them peanuts.

Oh yeah, there is most definitely a force + determination + unethical component to succeeding in business but that is the kind of intelligence I was talking about: he wouldn't even need to be that literate or numerate (although I'm not suggesting he is neither), he could just hire smart financial and business analysts in order to fulfill his ambitions.

Regardless of any intelligence I think he has, I still think he's a khunt.

Pretty much this.

In addition to not wanting to pay tax, he also doesn't want to have to pay to go on TV.

He still does, sues left right and centre. Clive Palmer was one of the white shoe brigade, the people that destroyed the gold coast in the 70s.

Gina Rinehart is the same. Always threats of litigation. That's how they roll. It sucks that they represent our country's wealth - they quite clearly have no interest in the country or its workers, only themselves, they fund the coalition and try to buy the media.

Bring it on conservatives, you are making this country awesome. Thanks.

but there isn't in politics? Politicians are the most unethical, dishonest and corrupt group of people that could possible be characterised, not to mention stupid. Politics requires little or no intelligence...........just a determination to bludge off the public purse and make empty promises.

At least Clive Palmer brings some business savvy and some common sense

Can we bring this back to the Titanic II.

He says he's going to rebuild the Titanic. Says he will make it "unsinkable" unless someone puts a hole in it. Says he will get it made in China. Then says he will support Australian workers.

Seriously.

The Titanic.....

He really did excel himself at this conference.

Unless he builds an appropriately scaled shipyard and then gets a few thousand people trained up he couldn't really build it here.

Surely that wouldn't be a problem for Clive. You need to think bigger, Claude.

I'm sure with a bit of effort he could come up with a press release laying out his plans to pay to move the docks in Liverpool where they built the Titanic stone by stone to Queensland.

Surely if you are going to build a replica Titanic you need to build a replica Liverpool.

If Australia votes this guy in, they deserve what they get. Swan's comments on not wanting to move towards a US-style approach of handing the keys to these kind of fuckers is the most astute thing he's ever said.

How much do you really know about Clive Palmer?

Palmer has one income-earning asset, a nickel processing plant that is only just profitable, and a bunch of tenements no one really wants to help him develop because they are remote and unproven (China First is a stranded asset because the Chinese investors picked it for a lemon). Mineralogy and its subsidiaries reported net losses of $58.5 m in 2008-09, $29m in 2009-10 and $11.4m in 2010-11. Which is why he doesn't pay much tax. he doesn't actually make any money.
