For those of you who like reading and stuff, check out the following transcript featuring Nicholas (AKA San Soda) and Bill interviewing each other - provides some good insight into what both are into and about...
BILL BREWSTER INTERVIEWS SAN SODA…
BB: What's the best thing about growing up in Belgium?
SS: It’s easy to study and there’s a lot of really good food and drinks.
Have you ever met Fat Ronny?
Never, just know who he is.
What's your greatest moment as a DJ and why?
Playing our recent kickless remake of ESP ‘It’s You’ in Panorama Bar in the morning with the sunlight coming through. We’d just finished it a couple of hours before and it was a perfect culmination of music, people and emotions.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island with one record, which one would it be and why?
This question is a nightmare, could pick so many, but for now: Slum Village ‘The Fantastic Volume 2’. Just love it so much, every track on it.
What's better, DJing or producing?
DJing, sharing the music is crucial and brings me way more joy. Producing is just another way of sharing music I think.
Why did you move to Berlin and how's it been since?
The question is “why did you stay in Belgium so long”! There’s not much there that interests me there apart from the music scene in Brussels maybe. I always found the general nightlife culture in Belgium to be very hypocritical and narrow-minded with not much left of the rich musical heritage of the 80s and 90s. I have a lot of respect for the few promoters left trying to push quality music though…
So far it’s been wonderful in Berlin although I’ve only had a couple weekends here. Really enjoying the food, people, nice spots in the city and the music. Excited about spending some time here in the summer for sure.
What's your number one favourite can't live without it record of 2012?
Omar-S ‘Tonight’ (FXHE)
What are you most looking forward to about coming to Australia?
Going to the zoo, meeting the people and seeing how they party over there.
If you were allowed to play just one tune at a birthday party, what would it be and why?
Bobby Brown ‘Two Can Play That Game’. Surely the best present ever…
Do you have a favourite record to finish a set with and if so, what is it?
Not one favorite but preferably something slow and sexy like Deniece Williams ‘Free’.
What's the best set you've seen/heard from another DJ this year?
Marcellus Pittman at Panorama Bar in Berlin and Theo Parrish at Corsica Studios in London.
Which producers should we be watching out for in 2012 and beyond?
Locked Groove, Pomrad, Mr. Beatnick, Het Collect-Ief Deruyter, Johannes Albert and Kevin Reynolds.

SS: How is your record collection organised and how often do you browse through it?
BB: It's organised in categories and in alphabetical order (I'm a librarian at heart). I have so many it needs to have some organisation or I'd never be able to find anything. Currently, I'm spending a lot of time in my record room, because I'm trying to prune my record collection down by about 2,000 to make it more manageable, so I've been re-assessing a lot of stuff I have.
Describe your ultimate dance party (size/location/DJs etc.)
My ultimate dance party is Low Life, my own party. We started it so we could act out our fantasies, I suppose. I think the ideal size for a great party is generally nothing over 5-600, maybe one or two rooms. A great crowd (word of mouth is the best publicity). If I had to pick a fantasy DJ line-up it would be Grandmaster Flash circa 1981, Danny Tenaglia circa 1994 and David Mancuso circa 1970.
What’s the biggest misconception DJs have about their crowds?
I'm not sure it's a misconception, but I think a lot of DJs play without acknowledging they have a crowd or even responding to them. I've seen plenty with their heads down as though they're in their bedrooms still. Good DJing is all about that interaction between the two, that's where the magic is.
What’s your favourite animal and why would/wouldn’t it be suitable for a club environment?
I love cocker spaniels and they wouldn't be suitable for a club environment because they hate loud music ;)
Which period in music history is most significant to you as a DJ now?
I would say the years between 1970 to 1976 are the most significant, because within that timescale everything we take for granted now was created, from the sound system as we know it today, the mixing DJ, the modern club environment, plus the creation of Hip Hop and Disco, both of which are the foundation for everything around now.
If you could own any piece of equipment in the world, musical or otherwise, what would it be and why?
A Vincent Velocette.
What’s the longest set you’ve ever played?
When we first started doing Low Life in London, I was the only DJ, so I played from the start at 10pm until whenever it finished (6-8am). I've done nine hours a good few times.
What doesn’t belong in a DJ booth?
Other people's coats.
What are you most looking forward to about coming to Australia?
I'm looking forward to seeing a culture that is both really similar to the UK but also very different. Plus the chance to catch up with some old friends while I'm there, like Colin Daniels, who I know from when he was A&R at Mushroom in London in the early 90s.
If you were allowed to play just one tune at a birthday party, what would it be and why?
The Beatles ‘Birthday’. Great song, fits the occasion.
Do you have a favourite record to finish a set with and if so, what is it?
There are a few. My two favourites are Jackson 5's ‘I Am Love’, which starts out as a beatless ballad and then gradually builds into this crazy prog-Disco track. The other one is Asha Puthli's ‘Space Talk’, a really beautiful and languid funky disco tune that is just perfect.
What's the best set you've seen/heard from another DJ this year?
Ray Mang in February – great mixture of old stuff and new, and stuff that hadn't even come out.
Which producers should we be watching out for in 2012 and beyond?
Amirali, Phon.O and Psychemagik.
