Who knew that an $18 bottle of 2006 Barolo from Costco would actually be good?

GWD seem to be selling the 2006 Taltarni Estate Pyrenees Shiraz for $13 a bottle unlabelled. RRP $40...Anyone tried those wines before?

^^ Blue Pyrenees is alright! I always liked the Cab, but they've dropped off the radar a lil bit in recent years...

Did anyone go to the VC wine fair in Sydney on the weekend?
I was working both days but got to try a few of the wines anyway.

Highlights:

Solanes Priorato 2006
Norton Privada Malbec
Norton Privada Cabernet Merlot Malbec
Peter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz 1998
Pommery Louise Champagne 1999.

Good weekend imo!

Ooooh, new Vinomofo site. Shiny!

There was a bottle of that Liandra Shiraz in the Easter Mystery Box - I was thinking that it might het a go this weekend, so if it does, I'll report back.

I was interested in that Liandra until most other reviews scored it 90 or less. Halliday had it at 87 and best before 2009.

Think I might save my cash for the 2010 release of the Thomas wines shirzes. This guy is making some fantastic Hunter Valley Shiraz at the moment.

Buckle from Tuck's Ridge....They also had the Mornington Penninsula Pinot from the same winery at half the price but it sold out.

EDIT: Speaking of which, mine just arrived.

just got my invite to the Penfolds Kalimna Icon and Luxury wine launch in May - they are launching the new Bin 169 Coonawarra Cab Sav ... but will also be selling/tasting limited amounts of the 1973 Bin 169 Coonawarra Claret .

grr...

had a poke around molly dooker the other day... was interesting to see how they do it. there's no doubt they're setup completely for the american market and absolutely no intention of ever becomming a premium australian winery. Tasted their velvet glove and I have more reason to think that yanks are stupid. I can't see how it's worth $180, but if they're willing to pay, all the better for my friends working there.

So the Tuck's Ridge Pinot is pretty damn good - smooth, nicely fruity but not overpowering, good length. Bargain for $20 a bottle, Mofo strikes again.

I was looking at that one but didst get it. Shame, haven't had a superb pinot in ages.

Does anyone think the new mofo site is a bit too much? I just get the feeling they've gone from the little engine that could to a groupon style site.

Yeah a bit OTT. Will continue to put up with it though...The increased COTD pulling power could also lead to more variety in the deals they get.

I'm getting put off by the recent introduction of international wine as well as the style of the new site... while I'm keen to try it, I feel they would have in the past put together a tasting box of a smattering of french and italian/spanish wines. I'm not convinced to buy something I've never heard of considering the average markup of european wine here.

how do you guys know it's being run by catch of the day?

It's not being run by COTD.

It is still being run by WinCru (the two vinomofo boys and a talented local Adelaide web developer).

It was sold last week to COTD, so yeah, I expect it to rapidly change direction.

A lot of wine makers like Yalumba used to do mystery deals with vinomofo with little damage to their brand, but I can't imagine they will continue the relationship now that COTD / James Packer is owning the site.

I haven't bought anything from them since last year, too many great deals through wineries whose membership and/or email lists I am on.

For instance - go here : http://www.k1.com.au/Purchase/Tractor-Shed-Wines.aspx It's all good. Especially the Meritage, Cab Sav and Petit Verdot

anyone know of an android app that lets you take a photo of the bottle, log the variety, year etc then lets you log the characteristics and/or write a review to yourself?

I have a vision of what i want, but don't really know how to find it. if nothing exists I'd consider learning how to make an app to facilitate my needs (if there's the desire for it)

That vinomofo website is dangerous.... too many wines I want to buy.

I looked a while back for the same sorta wine app (iphone) Bracko, but wasnt able to find anything for the aussie wines, not sure if there is something newer around now....

I will research.

yeah, what i want is quite particular and i don't want to be forking out for the paid apps if they're not what i want.

basically i want to take a photo of the bottle then setup my own (or have logical ones premade) categories. Categories would be trended instead of set so items like region or variety wouldn't result in me scrolling for 20min to find Grenache or Clare Valley because France and the US are all listed ahead of Australia...

will do some hunting on google play today and see what i can find.

edit: anyone had experience with these:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...=search_result

this one looks the goods....

Found another app.... might not be for everyone, but it fits my needs.

Vivino - http://www.vivino.com/
iphone and android

Take a photo of the label of the wine and it will scan/bring up details and you can add you own notes etc etc.
If they cant find the wine it goes to their team and they add it to their database.

Yeah, I wasn't super-impressed with it when we drank it last night - far from a bad drop, but if you'd been hanging around for 13 years waiting for it you might have been a bit disappointed.

gave that a go. Have to wait a couple of days for my first scan to be entered. Pretty useless without an existing db. Maybe if they market it enough and get everyone using it it'll grow pretty fast

Yeh I think thats the idea... more people scanning, the bigger the database is... I've got a few wines that are still waiting to be scanned most of the wines I scanned in came up.

I've had a few that didn't scan in, but when you manually enter it the db usually actually has them listed, if not then another year (which you can also change manually).

The features are there, its just not intuitive. I would actually help out with the scanning if they made a web portal.

Todays mofo deal is intriguijng but buckleys of sorting out what it is...they won't even give the region this time beyond "south australia".

EDIT: Not so hard after all. Either the Elderton Command or Penfolds St Henri by the looks of it.

I doubt it's Penfolds and they've had Elderton wines on there before.....so methinks the former

Wirra Wirra RSW also meets the 95pt drink by 2022 criteria ... maybe a little too cheap

Penfolds is a possibility, they are doing their nationwide launches for Kalmina club members of their iconic range, so they could be deprecating older stock.

95 JH points and an RRP of $90 isn’t a lot to go on to justify spending $55 a bottle, especially when 2007 was generally a poor year for SA shiraz (from many reports, St Henri included), with exceptions. I understand how providing a region risks having consumers work out who the supplier is, but it would also provide more insight into the quality/style of the wine as some regions fared better than others. Minimal tasting notes provided by the Mofos on this one too. One person’s perspective and a high RRP won’t make me purchase 6 bottles at $55ea. Also, the St Henri, RSW and Command suggestions assume it’s a straight Shiraz. The Mofos have tricked us before by tweaking the published variety. I think they previously called a mystery Shiraz Mataro a straight Shiraz, or something like that, which threw the ‘elimination by Halliday points’ method out the window.

All of that said, the 2007 St Henri was made from fruit from all over SA, so the ‘South Australia’ region of the wine fits with it, as does the RRP. Still, even if I knew it was the 2007 St Henri, I don’t know that I’d buy it – and I’m a huge fan of the wine most years.

Normally they give the region on those secret deals....

I suppose I see it as an opportunity cost thing...Even if 2007 wasn't the best year, is it going to be better than something I can get at a cellar door or at Dans for $55? I tend towards yes, particularly given I don't have the expertise or knowledge to really be picking out other bargains on my own...but of course it's a leap of faith. I split a box with a friend so am happy to take the risk....bottom line is that I've never been disappointed by one of those secret deals.

I still think it's the Command....They did a mystery box thing a while back where 1 in 10 boxes got a bottle of that. Plus I know one of the brand manager jonnies at Penfolds and he has always sworn black and blue they would never end up on those kinds of sites.

does seem like it was a challenging year in the barossa. I think I'm done with Vinomofo, I've been waiting for the glimmer of hope but if their picks don't improve I think a strongly worded, polite email telling them their site/company stinks ever since COTD took over is the prudent approach

It seems less attuned to wine lovers, sure, but there has still been decent stuff on there....half the stuff has been deals they already offered pre COTD...

I think the idea of it being a COTD site now may magnify how big a change its actually been.

But yeah, I've certainly bought much less recently.

I haven't bought since last year.

Really, since I'm a flight club member at bird in hand, a stonewaller at Rockfords, a K1 premier cru, a penfolds kalimna member, and also with peter lehmann, chateau tanunda, yalumba, two hands, murray street, debortoli etc, and personal friends with the guys at alpha box and dice, teusner, tin shed, battle of bosworth, the pawn, vinteloper, lazy ballerina and others .... I can get enough good deals at vinomofo type prices without having to bother with the randomness,.

I bought the Y&P mystery in March but otherwise I haven’t bought since mid last year. There seemed to be a time where the Mofos were on fire and I bought almost every couple of weeks – particularly early on where the mystery deals provided outstanding value. I hadn’t thought too much about the correlation between not buying lately through lack of interest in the wines offered and COTD ownership, but there may be something to this.

About this mystery wine, some valid points there about buying based on ‘trust’ and a proven track record, I just have an aversion to spending $55 on a bottle (or several) that I don’t know more about, regardless of perceived quality, as it may not be to my personal style. Re: the Command, I think this wine has a higher RRP than $90 and I’m pretty sure that any retailer will, when discounting, advertise a starting RRP on the higher side (as VM tend to) to achieve the largest possible discount in the eyes of the consumer once they set their sale price.

I don’t know. I’m intrigued with this one. To pump it up so much, it has to be something special or else anyone with half a clue would be justified in losing a lot of ‘trust’ in the brand they have built.
