Best Airport in the world is Incheon (South Korea), not Changi (Singapore)
http://www.theage.com.au/travel/trav...503-1y17m.html

Quote:

The best airports in the world have been named in the annual World Airport Awards.
South Korea's Incheon Airport has again been named the world's best, taking out the top award for the second time after first winning in 2009.
The airport was ranked in the world's top five for eight of the 10 award categories from Skytrax, which include accessibility, comfort, speed of transit, friendliness of staff, and shopping and other facilities.
Advertisement: Story continues below
The awards, announced last month, are based on surveys conducted by Skytrax with 12 million passengers of 100 different nationalities over a nine month period.
Asian airports dominated the list, with six of the top 10 slots awarded to airports in the region.
"Aside from the inherent benefit that many of these airports have in the most modern infrastructure and terminal facilities, the real differentiator that comes across in customer feedback is that the service culture across these Asian airports is very often at a much higher quality level, and most importantly delivers in a consistent manner," Skytrax chairman Edward Plaisted said.
Singapore's Changi Airport was named as the second best airport in the world, with Hong Kong International Airport coming third.
London's Heathrow Airport, the world's busiest international airport, was in the news this week for leaving passengers waiting for hours in long queues at border control, but the awards offered some good news for the beleaguered facility.
Heathrow's Terminal 5, opened in 2008, won the award for best airport terminal, while the airport also won the award for best shopping. Another London airport, Stansted, won the award for best low-cost airport.
India's Delhi International Airport was named the most improved, helped by the opening of its new, modern terminal in 2010.
In our region, Brisbane Airport was named the best for Australia/Pacific, but neither Sydney or Melbourne managed to rate in the top five, which was rounded out by the Gold Coast , Christchurch, Adelaide and Wellington.
The Regal Airport Hotel in Hong Kong was named the world's best airport hotel, followed by the Sofitel at London's Heathrow, the Crowne Plaza Changi Airport, the Langham Place Beijing Airport and the Novotel Suvarnabhumi Bangkok.
World's top 10 best airports
1. Incheon International Airport
2. Singapore Changi Airport
3. Hong Kong International Airport
4. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport
5. Beijing Capital International Airport
6. Munich Airport
7. Zurich Airport
8. Kuala Lumpur International Airport
9. Vancouver International Airport
10. Central Japan International Airport

I was debating whether or not to place this in the much-visited Travel forum, or in a forum that's conducive to debate.

But seriously, it doesn't really matter.

I'm allowing Incheon to be on the list, as I've never been there, and who am I to question its right to the throne... But seriously? KL? Even Japan (as lovely as the country is) is a bit of a stretch. The airport is far away from Tokyo, and boarding a bus is a laborious chore, rather than something akin to a pleasurable experience.

Discuss.

There is the option of getting the train to and from Narita Airport rather than the bus from Tokyo. I remember this as I caught it after getting the Shinkansen from Osaka. The bus is good if it takes you straight to your hotel, though.

Changi Airport's still my favourite. Least favourite is a tie between Brunei and Heathrow (circa 1996 and 1993, respectively).

Changi Airport has massage/spa ... Hong Kong does not (well, it has a foot/hand spa, but that's not the same as a 90 minute chinese massage)

Therefore Changi > Hong Kong

Agree on Schipol's high rating though, awesome airport with the hottest immigration chicks in the world.

Adelaide Airport easily the best in Australia, but probably a function of its newness

oh, and they are not talking about golden cat arm airport (Narita) when they say Central Japan, they are talking about Central Japan airport near Nagoya, which is pretty swish - they have a Japanese Bathhouse.

I do. If I have to fly into somewhere or through somewhere, the quality of the airport is a consideration. That's why if I need to work in Belgium I'll fly into Schipol rather than CDG. Or when I'm travelling through America I'll avoid Atlanta and DFW at all costs.

The food at Incheon is awesome and cheap. Excellent Korean [duh] japanese, Italian! Complete opposite of Australian airports where you pay $8 for some soggy chips or $14 for a dodgy sandwich.

Atlanta is ok if you like Walking, and Walking, and Walking, and then more Walking.

As a transit it isn't too bad, but if you are actually getting on or off at Atlanta, pack your rollerblades

Agreed that LAX is a shithole , but flying from Australia leaves you with few options, especially if your ultimate destination is west coast.

not sure at your surprise over KL, it's a great airport. Changi feels like it's been in renovation stage for years - definitely doesn't deserve no. 1 at the moment.

I don't get Hong Kong. Yeah it was fine last year, but what's so special about it? Changi in Singapore has a lot of life and character to it, HK just seemed dead the whole time.

Same deal with Belgrade, lol.

Changi feels like you're walking around in a Westfield shopping centre.

Schiphol is great, Copenhagen too. Like dbb said, hot immigration birds. Also lots of lounge space, quiet areas, bars.

Incheon is fantastic as is HKIA, the oddity is not seeing the redevloped Beijing Capital on the list..this airport leaves the others in it's wake...personally, I am in and out of airports each week and I find Incheon the best by far.

Was there 2 years ago and was certainly very good. No arguments on Changi. Zurich airport is also very good, I love it as it is quite compact and is quite slick. Schipol is just a monster sized airport, which drops a few points for me. I'm a massive fan of London City, purely from the fact that you can get through it so quickly.

And someone rated LHR from 1993? That's almost 20 years ago. Puhlease. It's still a pain in the arse when you come into it though, but the Virgin Clubhouse there is excellent at least.

Haven't seen the new airport in Berlin yet, plus India is revamping many of its major airports at the moment.

Worst airport easily goes to Chennai. It's a stinking sinkhole. Even Havana was 100x better.

yeah, when I went to Chennai airport, arrived at midnight in a Monsoon it was a real shock.

goats and dogs in mud out the front weaving in and out of the taxis and human chaos, massive anti terrorist bollards everywhere, guards waving around either guns or thermal cameras (for birdflu), you needed a "I'm not running a fever" signed card before you could pass immigration, no signs, people wandering everywhere, the toilet doors had brown liquid seeping from them ...

nuts.

LHR is getting better, but it still takes a good 30m to walk from T2 checkin to the Irish departure gates ... not good when in transit from Australia with a short time frame. Retinal scans everywhere as well. T5 isn't too shabby, but they've copied from Asian airports so no surprise there.

Incheon and Changi deserve top billing equally for me.

Both are dead easy to transit through, have excellent facilities for all kinds of passenger as well.

Narita isn't the best in truth, but the Narita Express and the Keisei Skyliner make it easy to get into town, albeit in 80 or so minutes.

Heathrow and CDG are just shocking airports on all levels.

I spend lots of time in all the airports mentioned in Asia and Hong Kong is still the best. Its well designed. Changi is illogical and looks like it's had addon afterthoughts with each terminal addition. Hong Kong has bigger capacity and throughput and has the ability to handle more than any other aiport in Asia. With the new terminal 3 in development, it will be the one of the world's biggest capacity airports if not the biggest.

It still has the record for me for disembarking a flight, clearing passport control, collecting baggage, clearing customs and into a taxi. 13mins flat.

did that this morning in Adelaide (flight from Singapore) in under 10mins ... yeah, I know, a lot smaller airport - but still super efficient.

Did the same thing in HKG in November. Can't fault it or Changi really.

Hong Kong also has that brilliant service where you can drop your bags off and check-in in the city in the morning, after you've checked out of your hotel. Then you can head to the airport and go straight through security onto your flight in the evening. Does any other airport do that?

Having been through Incheon quite a few times I don't see the appeal, at least compared to Changi or Hong Kong. I find Incheon huge, sterile and soulless, and I don't like the high-end shopping mall vibe. At least Changi actually feels like somewhere you can hang out for a few hours between flights.

Changi has the spas for the massages , so you can waste an hour there. You can waste several hours in the outside cacti beer garden, if you have the budget, or even just pop into Gheyland (10m away) for local eating house food and tiger beer ($4 for the food, $6 for a big bottle of beer) if you have just a couple of hours to kill (or, it is Gheyland, so you can also get a "massage" there too ;-) )

btw, Changi has complementary luggage storage services too. Just visit the "left baggage" counters and they do it all, for free. There is also a payable service, International Pte Ltd, in T1 and T2 (maybe T3 as well) for around $3 per 24 hours.

Also, like in all airports, just walk out the door to the nearest airport hotel, and leave the bags there, The baggage people never ever check if you have a current reservation at the hotel, and the service will also be free (with tips to be paid in America).

you can easily spend 2 to 2.5 hours at LAX immigration though - especially if your flight from Aus arrives just after the China/HK/Japan/Korean flights.

Just went through KLIA last week for the first time. Nice place. Had to kill ~10hours there so the range of food options were great, especially inside the terminal (C). Beers were expensive but we enjoyed chilling at the bar. Amazing how quiet the place is too thanks to all the soundproofing on the roof—a stark contrast to the big echo halls of Suvarnabhumi.

Changi is still my current favourite though.

Yeah, don't have a red-eye transfer at KL. Nothing was open when we got in just after midnight for a two and a half hour wait.

Just came in from Wagga Wagga airport today. Really surprised that didnt make the top 10. The fact there is no security screening meant no queuing at all to board the plane, it was a breeze.
