Motivating Liebing by Bruno Orso, 18 March 2012.

This mix is inspired by the official announcement of Chris Liebing’s long overdue Australian club tour. I'm pumped for a large dose of “fucking techno” and to get the chance to see one of techno’s leading lights in the flesh.

As I see it, Liebing occupies a unique position as a sort of elder statesman of techno and I genuinely believe that the evolution of his attitude, at some point in 2009, is one of the most significant reasons techno has never sounded better. Liebing’s broad appeal to the techno masses has seen (relatively) popular acceptance of deeper, (sometimes) hypnotic and proper industrial sounds; and, has had the added benefit of casting that shitty white noise/car engine idling phase of techno into the background (although it does persist but I won’t name names).

I am a fussy bastard and it is never as simple as just being happy that someone is touring and it being great. I want Liebing to delve deep into has bag of tricks to play a set for the ages (see incredible 2011 Collabs set with Speedy J). My view is that, in the context of a few "incomplete" appearances in Melbourne (through absolutely no fault of his own), the right warm up could be the best way of setting the tone for the deep and (then) banging Liebing that has been reserved for a disappointing few of his CLR podcasts.

If I was given the opportunity to play the all-important warm up slot this set is how it would sound (note that in my fantasy the mixing is actually as tight as the proverbial). I deliberately stayed away from CLR tunes and tried to avoid playing tracks from artists closely associated with Liebing (or at least the more common tracks from those artists) allowing myself two indulgences: Speedy J’s "Klave" (because it is a little older and is essential for this set) and Fixmer’s "Last Heroes" (because I don’t think anyone plays it). Klock’s "Pulse" probably needs to be considered a third indulgence. The remaining tracks are, as usual, from the artists and labels I follow closely.

After many months playing around and experimenting with my DJ setup I've settled on a layout and approach that I'm happy with. This is my first recorded set using NI Maschine alongside my Xone DX and Traktor. Maschine allows me to add a live element to my sets by adding percussion, effects and samples whilst allowing me to rearrange tracks and generally add more of my own personal touch to my sets. For me it's a whole new way of doing things. Hence the set name - Version 2.0.

I'm happy with how the mix turned out. As is the case with all of my mixes, it's a one take 'live' set with no pre-planned material or editing - what you hear is what you get. I don't prepare any loops or preprogrammed sequences on the Maschine. I just load up a few kits of samples and percussion and tap stuff in live. It's not perfect - but neither am I.

Wow what a mammoth episode! "My Beatport" for me has been absolutely inundated with amazing music over the past three weeks. With everything for chill-out to deep house, techno, progressive and even Drum'n'Bass.

When there's so much good music coming out it makes it a hard decision to figure out what to put on the show - so instead of sticking to the usual, this episode we explore the deeper side of some of my new music on a journey that will likely start on your couch and hopefully have you up dancing by the end of it.

I smash through 27 tracks over two hours, this episode is definitely a bit of an experiment - littered with a pile of three deck mixes, new genres and recorded on the fly. They say variety is the spice of life - I hope you all enjoy the end result!
