I started mixing with cassettes and then moved to turn tables back in the late 80's. Through time DJing has grown into larger scale platforms with USBs and computers on multi touch screens. When someone plays, its not just about pushing buttons on a laptop for preset playlists. This requires matching and synching skills combined with musical knowledge and strong mathematical aptitude. Six years ago, I thought about playing for a Guinness World record of 100 hours and learned that accomplishing an attempt to publicly spin music without sleep for multiple days requires courage. It also requires excellent health, clear state of mind, determination, good funding and sponsors to really make a successful go at breaking a record. I salute Rene Brunner (DJ DC), Smokey Joe, Hertz, and others for attempting and/or achieving their records, regardless of how Guinness or amateur spectators label each attempt.

It's easy for people to be critical and negative. I know many DJs..good ones, bad ones, and the rest. Regardless of how we measure success here, very few have the tenacity and drive to take on this challenge. We can all take a lesson from Smokey who is taking the latest GWR information like a real winner. Good luck to Hertz. Hope he achieves his attempt and much more. May we have half of the strength and focus these DJs have to achieve our own dreams.

I'm focusing solely on the reasons why people think it's worthy of respect. It's not worthy of respect if it's just a big stunt to promote his own name. That's akin to respecting a brand just because they've launched a new advertising campaign. If he was doing it for reasons outside of himself - THEN it's worthy of respect.

Do you know why I think people are hating? Because when it comes down to it, no one really cares about the record for the longest DJ set. It's a personal feat of endurance, a mark in a record book, but even the most rabid of clubbers has to admit that it's a hollow, pointless exercise. It doesn't bring anything to the scene. It was no different, no more meaningful when SJM did it. But Joe's insane personality got people on board and made it fun. I don't think anyone really paused to reflect on what it meant for someone to DJ for so long. They just wanted to see the crazy bastard do it.

Now DJ Hertz is having a crack at it, and while he may (by all reports) be a great guy and a capable DJ, he doesn't bring that SJM energy to the table. And without it, people are seeing this record attempt for what it is: A guy pressing buttons for several days. A self indulgent pursuit of bragging rights that feeds nothing back into the tapestry of humanity. Hertz is taking the flak, because he doesn't have the SJM bubble around him. But the real target isn't the man, it's the pursuit.

open-air rock music festival in Latin America. He spent his boyhood in Chile
where he was recognized as a professional champion BMX Bike Racer. His
travels with his family throughout Americas nourished his melodious ear with
music from various cultures. Being immersed in music all his life naturally made

time, Charlie P had the opportunity to visit prestigious venues throughout the
world. He fulfilled one of his dreams when he moved to New York City to devote
