Where to stay in....?
There seem to be a few threads floating around for different locations so maybe we can use one.

I'm looking for recommendations on where to stay in Paris. I'm not necessarily after specific hotels, more location - what areas have people stayed in and what recommendations do you have?
I'm going to be in and out of Paris for 2-3 nights at a time over the duration of two weeks. I'd like to be pretty central, not too expensive and an area that at least feels safe enough for a girl to wander around on her own at night.
Gentlemen, we just seized an airfield.
That was pretty fucking ninja.

Is there not a Paris thread? Location specific threads are far more helpful.

Having said that, hostels fucking suck in Paris. But you want a hotel so I can't be of much help I'm afraid. What I can say is though book asap if you're staying in summer, it's the most visited city in the world and most decent places are booked out. Def don't book on the go.

I don't need specific hotel recommendations. I'm more interested in areas to stay in.
At the moment I'm looking at Montmarte or the Latin Quarter.

Dare I say it... what is not too expensive and what is central?

You could easily stay around Gambretta in the 20e. Will be much cheaper than the Latin Quarter and not as nice, but that's a sacrifice to make if you need. At the end of the day, the Metro is your friend, and things are not that far apart.

Price wise, I guess I'd be maxing out at around $250 a night. I'd prefer not to be too far out of the central areas.

What does that mean? A 10 minute walk? A 20 min Metro ride?

Last time I was in Paris I stayed at the Hotel du Pre:

Would stay again, would recommend to others. I think I paid about 85 euro for a spacious (albeit single) room with two juliet balconies looking out over a quiet street with a park at the end. It is close enough to Gare du Nord to be convenient but far enough away to avoid the dodginess which characterises hotels right at major transport hubs and you can walk to Montmatre/Opera.
But we're fools if we sit back and stare at the ground
While the weasels and analysts sing
If we want our place in history, we can't let the frustration
Drive us to fashionable drinking again

what do you consider central? St Germain? The Eiffel Tower? Champs Elysees? Montparnasse?

The Montparnasse / St Germain area is very safe to stay in and walk around at night as a girl. Do not stay north across the river near St Denis / Gard Du Nord.

I'd also consider staying near Trocadero or Rue de Passy - much less touristy, lots of decent "locals only" style cafes and high end shopping. Still on the metro lines, and easy to get to the central areas.

I loved St Germain. Stayed at:

That area felt so central, such that we bought the metro 3 day pass and used it once, from the airport to hotel! Such a shame really, as there are some beautiful stations in Paris.

The room we had too had it's own little opening doors and teeny balcony.
