Little Nobody stuff
Hey mates,

Since I've passed on IF? to Sebastian Bayne, I feel a bit weird flogging my wares in that thread on ITM, particularly since some of the stuff I'm up to isn't always IF?-related but on other labels.

So I hope you don't object to me setting up this specific thread - I'll try not to over-use it and clutter up the forum, but there's a lot happening this year that I'd really enjoy sharing with anybody interested, plus it'll stop dispersal amidst other threads.

I think being over here in Japan over the past month has made me realize how short (and somewhat precious) life is - and how much we should live-up and enjoy what we have.

So, without further ado, here's some of what's been happening under the shoddy Little Nobody/Andrez Bergen/DJ Fodder/Funk Gadget banners over the past 4 months of 2011, the truly best parts being quality remixes from people like Bas Mooy, Aux 88, Justin Berkovi, Inigo Kennedy, Dave Tarrida, Shin Nishimura, Luke's Anger, Dave Angel, Mijk van Dijk, DJ Hi-Shock, Ben Mill, Cut Bit Motorz, Advanced Human and DJ Wada - all people whose music I dig and respect in spades.

Coming up in May and beyond are a series of releases (vinyl/digital/CD) collaborating with and remixed by the likes of Cristian Vogel, Blake Baxter, James Ruskin, Si Begg, Bill Youngman, Patrick Pulsinger, Tobias Schmidt, Vadz, Justin Robertson and JE:5, for labels like IF?, Slidebar, Gynoid Audio, Elektrax, Finn Audio and Auricular.

Thanks, G - you rock. Likewise for sure!

And now for the LP - my first proper Little Nobody album since Action Hero (2000), out today... geez, that took a bit of time:

LITTLE NOBODY
'HARD FOILED' LP

[IF125]

The official promo sheet waffle says:

"This album is about Little Nobody and his unique take on the regions between house and techno. Often raw, with a swinging groove and never formulised, he treads a path that would be considered unsafe by other artists; Little Nobody lets nothing get in the way of creativity. Highly listenable, always working on the dance floor, the Little Nobody sound is his alone.

"A number of singles have been released and remixed from the album notably, 'Metropolis How?', 'The Condimental Op' and 'Robota, with remixes by varied and accomplished artists including: Aux 88, James Ruskin, K. Alexi Shelby, Steve Stoll, Justin Berkovi, Inigo Kennedy, Dave Angel, Wyndell Long, DJ Hi-Shock, Jammin’ Unit, Bas Mooy, Sebastian Bayne and Dave Tarrida. The list could go on!"

Proof, I guess, is in the muzak, tho'...

Somewhat schizophrenic interview up on Techno How? site here:
http://www.elektraxmusic.com/hardboiled_little_nobody/

Also playing @ Unit here in Tokyo on 7 May, alongside DJ Wada and Shin Nishimura (it's a benefit for the people up in the north east of Japan), just in case any of you are foot-loose, fancy-free, and... happen to be in Tokyo!

Interview - in Japanese. Good chance to practice your skills with nihongo 日本語, or just ignore entirely:

In a nutshell, stuff about the upcoming party @ Unit, the recent album, an upcoming remix CD called 'Commix', and the recent travails here in Japan.

This Thursday 5 May, I'll be doing a live streaming set thing @ Dommune here in Tokyo along with Shin Nishimura and Hiroshi Watanabe (aka Kaito) - I'm doing the hour from 9:00pm (10:00 in Melbs/Sydney) and it'll probably be a hack mess, but I think anyone vaguely interested o/seas can tune in.

Shin Nishimura is on from 11:00pm (midnight in Oz) and will be far more interesting.

More info, most of it in Japanese, here:

I'll be playing @ Tokyo club Unit tonight, from midnight to 1:00am; cool local cats Shin Nishimura, DJ Wada (from Co-Fusion), Hiroshi Watanabe, Temma Teje, Dublee and DJ Sodeyama are on too, and it's a benefit party for the earthquake/tsunami people up north.

If you just so happen to be in Tokyo 東京, pop in; otherwise p'raps you could dust down your own private Lear jet for the occasion...?

Little Nobody
Definitive Dirge EP

channel038

FREE RELEASE

"The multi-talented Tokyo-based Ozzy ex-pat Andrez Bergen makes a welcome return to Dead Channel with four solid cuts of main-room friendly techno.

"These tracks evoke the sounds of Berlin’s legendary Berghain club and its residents Marcel Dettmann and Ben Klock – deep, shuffling slabs of late-night funk – but also retain that playful approach to production that we’ve come to associate with Little Nobody.

"Recommended to all fans of quality deep techno."

Yep, this one's a freebie through Leeds, UK-based label Dead Channel - if you're interested, just skip over here:

I love it, but that flammed kick drum is giving me all sorts of issues on four decks. It's either a two deck track or a top end / mid range only track for me
(is flammed a word? I mean it as in a drum flam, not a flame)

Heh-heh... I know what'cha mean; I tend to be a bit wayward in my production and I like to go a bit off-kilter and self-indulgently push the envelope, so it makes it bloody hard for me to DJ my own tracks out, since I usually use three or more sound inputs. Man, simplicity has its merits... just wish I could abide by 'em.

And if "flammed" isn't a word, it darned well should be!!

Thanks - coming from you, this is very much appreciated!

By the way, this 12" vinyl baby is out as of today, exclusive to German distributor deejay.de:

BEHIND MOISTURE CRACK 12"

feat. CRISTIAN VOGEL . TOBIAS SCHMIDT . LITTLE NOBODY . BILL YOUNGMAN

"Already doing the rounds in more prescient (not to mention incorrigible) electronic/techno sets is this gloriously wayward wax, #6 in a fine series, from cutting edge German label Slidebar.
This time they've inducted 4 fiendishly suave, long-time veterans of the genre: Cristian Vogel (Mosquito/Tresor), Tobias Schmidt (Scandinavia/Disko B), Bill Youngman (Tresor/Feinwerk) and Little Nobody (IF?/Noodles Discotheque).
The quartet don't just push all the right leftfield buttons and bling the tweak fantastic; they also reinvent the contemporary groove and find funk in the freak. Superb stuff that defies classification - just like the producers themselves."

Oh, by the way, I'll be in Melbourne for a couple of weeks in August - ostensibly to launch my novel plus spend some time with friends and family. And I've just confirmed that I'll be DJing at Sentido Funf in Fitzroy on Saturday 13 August (from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, alongside Andre Le Vogue).

If anyone's up for it, I'd love to see you, tho' be advised I'll be going for more low-key, soundscapey beats like the recent Vadz & JE:5 remixes, my older hip hop related material, and spinning through to the Lucy remix of Ben Mill.

A few new things to update anybody who's vaguely interested.

There's an extensive interview up today about the development of the novel (and my hack musical asides as well) on the very cool UPSTART site; big thanks to the writer, Radhika, for making it an interesting exercise - and for reigning me in and making sense out of my waffling:

http://www.upstart.net.au/2011/07/27...little-nobody/

******

In early August, I'm popping back to Australia for the first time in 2 years.

The Melbourne book launch for Tobacco-Stained Mountain Goat will be happening while I'm in town, on Wednesday 10th August, at the Miss Libertine gallery For Walls. It's set to happen from 7pm to 10pm and I'll be sticking on a dodgy soundtrack I've pre-recorded, mostly of music influences but also my own Little Nobody/Funk Gadget material.

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=152173894856521

******

On Saturday 13th August I'll be playing a one-off thing @ Sentido Funf in Fitzroy, alongside Jani Ho (Finn Audio) and resident Andre Le Vogue, before heading back to Tokyo for the long haul - if you're bored and in town, of course I'm going to say here that it'd be great to have a chin-wag... can't help myself! But it should be a fun rort of a night. I'm getting on early (7pm to 9pm) so I can kick back and relax thereafter.

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=167733399960740

******

Finally, here's a remix I recently finished (as yet unmastered) for legendary Detroit duo AUX 88, which they'll be releasing through their label Puzzlebox. Thought I'd wing it through here in case you're curious.

OK, I'm out the door tomorrow to get the flight from Narita Airport - about bloody time!

Be nice to spend some time in a place that isn't shaking every second minute. Hopefully see some of you while I'm in town - this gig is happening in just 1½ weeks, with special guests Jani Ho (Finn Audio) + DJ Andre Le Vogue.

Sweet review for the above EP courtesy of JUNO:

"The calibre of remixers on this release reinforces Little Nobody's rising status in techno circles. While Ground Loop does a fine, grinding take on the title track, replete with distorted beats, and German artist 88uw delivers a grungy-bass led interpretation, the fact that Gynoid persuaded veterans Chris Finke and Blake Baxter to remix Little Nobody is impressive. Finke's version of the title track is, as expected, a heavy tribal groove augmented by a snaking acid bass. Meanwhile, Detroit's prince of techno drops two takes. The "Recon Delay" mix is stripped back yet revolves around a pile driving kick, while the "Depth Charge" take is a galloping, drummy groove. The origial's insistent drums and intense rhythms are also well worth a spin."

Chuffed to be part of this.

OUT NOW ON 12" VINYL / DIGITAL:
AUX 88 presents Black Tokyo Remix SESSIONS 2

"Melodic, atmospheric Detroit techno remix session. Gez Varley [LFO] serves the strongest dancefloor moment with a lush, string-heavy G-Man remix of 'Shadow Dancing', while Andrez Bergen favours a more twitchy, Funked-up restyle for 'Electronic Underground' and Arne Weinberg does his deftly detailed thing to 'Electronic Cinema'."

SELECTED FEEDBACK:

“Fucking proper shit man, every mix spot on.”
STEVE STOLL

“Great EP—would love to play this out.”
LAURENT GARNIER

“Thanks for the Little Nobody/Aux 88 remix—it’s cool. Very different to the original, but it works well I think.”
PERC

“Wow, nice one, the Little Nobody remix is very funky. Quality!!!”
DJ HI-SHOCK/ADVANCED HUMAN

“Nice. Gez’s remix of Shadow Dancing is top, but my fave is Aux 88’s original version of Electronic Cinema.”
POSTHUMAN

“Little Nobody’s remix is how house music used to be. Nicely done—nicely recorded too.”
WYNDELL LONG

“Electronic Cinema – Arne Weinberg remix sounds good to me.”
SHIN NISHIMURA

LITTLE NOBODY
'LINOLEUM ACTRESS' EP
[IF?]

This baby's out now through IF?, with remixes by JUSTIN ROBERTSON, PAUL BIRKEN and SEBASTIAN BAYNE.

@Beatport
http://www.beatport.com/release/linoleum-actress/844035

Support from:

The Advent, Umek, Luciano, Slam, Danny Howells, Dibby Dougherty, Deepchild, Mike Callander, Bas Mooy, 88uw and others.

'Linoleum Actress' is the third single from the Little Nobody album Hard Foiled, released back in April. It is a twisted jacking and mutant techno offering. 'Linoleum Actress' defies any real categorisation except to say it is Little Nobody in full effect.

Releasing music for over 15 years, he is currently a favoured artist of Detroit legends Aux 88. This EP sees others turning their hand at remixing him.

The Deadstock 33s deliver a remix that takes only the underlying essence of the original and creates a version all of its own in a very clever way. The Deadstock 33s is the UKs Justin Roberson’s new psychedelic disco techno moniker. In the last year or so he has begun to define the Deadstock sound which is reminiscent of both his Lionrock and Justin Roberton works, yet something fresh and uncharted.

Paul Birken is a US techno hardware boffin who creates groove and nuance in his tracks with endless routing and re-routing of signal paths. He is well respected and supported by the underground techno artists of the world such as the UK's Surgeon. His remix is an industrial techno masterpiece, which should not be taken lightly.

Lastly IF? Records boss Sebastian Bayne seems to take things into deeper territory, but is somewhat thwarted by opting to use the most upfront synth parts from the original. What comes out is a big room sound that gets mind bending at its peak. Techno weaponry.

Nice work, that Meme original is real nice, I like it.
Audio Injection

Behind the Meme Claw sounds good to me.
Shin Nishimura (Japan)

The mood and vibe [of Scratch Awl] is bang on and reminds me of Traversable Wormhole. I really like it. I think, especially just before the middle where the pads really come in and there are the vox bites and delayed shakers, etc, it’s really strong.
Ben Mill (Ground Loop, Australia)

Absolutely brilliant. Can’t wait to get a copy.
Ryan Miller (Chicago, USA)

Νice project. behind the meme claw works for me.
Anthony ‘Shake’ Shakir (Detroit)

That’s a solid release, mate! Very nice stuff. I wish I had of had the Scratch Awl track for NYE because that would of fit right in with what I was playing. Love the second track too!
Gene Hoffmann (Australia)

I like Scratch Awl the most – really nice and dark.
Rysh Paprota (Australia)

Full support for the entire EP. Scratch Awl is my favourite.
Sebastian Bayne (IF? Records)

Very, very great release!! I will support in my next sets!!
Andreas Florin (Planet Rhythm, Germany)

F**king wicked stuff… Play until the cow comes home!
Matt Van Diemen (Australia)

Congrats man, nice work!
Luis Flores (Mexico)

Great groove.
Stingrays Stingray

Solid release again, the title track is my favorite. Great funk & atmosphere. Full support from me as always.
Mattias Fridell (Sweden)

Loving ‘Behind the Meme Claw’! The groove is very good and I like the breaks in it… very dancefloor oriented!
Claudio Masso (Italy)

I really like this.
Bactee & Tito (Poland)

Scratch Awl is phatt!!!!
Krenzlin (Germany)

The 2nd and 3rd ones are my faves!

Hey, mates - totally forgot to put this releases here:

'Chrysophylax' EP feat. Andreas Florin, Satoshi Imano & Homma Honganji

We also have the 'Robota' remixes out, with tweaking by Inigo Kennedy, DJ Hi-Shock, Ben Mill and Kultrun.

Plus I have a track remixed by 3phazegenerator on this new compilation from We Call It Hard in Germany.

Otherwise, production has been a wee bit on the back-burner as I promote my new novel 100 Years of Vicissitude (out this week) and work on #3, but I do have a remix for Chicago's Lester Fitzpatrick (Relief Records) coming out on vinyl early on in 2013, and a remix by Detroit's Alan Oldham (DJ T-1000) due for release through IF?
