So thought I might post here for some advice or thoughts. Currently using a Pentax k10d which is getting a bit long in the tooth. I want to upgrade but really dislike the feel and size of the k5 so tossing up whether to change sides or get the k5 and hope I get used to it. 60d s seem dirt cheap at the moment or am I better biting the bullet and going full frame. Would be sacrificing a fair bit of glass though ( 10 -20mm, 16 - 50 F2.8, 70 - 200 f2.8 and a 105 macro ) plus a flash. What would equivalent lenses be for a ff system ? Any advice appreciated.

i really enjoy the handling of the k-5 even if i disagree with a few controls vs canon (but that's what i'm used to!), i don't think you'd dislike it for long. i find its ergonomics better than the k10/20.

as for glass, the 70-200 and 105 are full frame lenses.... but obviously there's no full frame pentax body to use them on.

so equivalent lenses would be a sigma 12-24, any 24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 and 105.

Cheers on the advice . K5 just felt really small and uncomfortable in hand compared to the larger k10 saying that I always have a battery grip on which would make the k5 seem even worse. Should maybe try it with a grip on if I can. Possibly worth giving a go with how low price has dropped and apparently qq issues have been fixed up.

i've got reasonably big hands and the k-5 feels just right for me. k-r feels a bit small though. never used a k-5 with a grip, so can't comment there.

Well I've decided that deal was to good to pass up so fingers crossed I get used to it. Had to go through dcw as the place in that link was out of stock and vanbar looked to be grey market for that deal. Going to the states in August so may even hold the lens till after that rather then lug the 70- 200 around. Thanks again for the find Rancho.

So I thought I had a dud.... couldn't even manual focus.
Turns out that when the tripod collar is too tight (out of box) -- you cannot focus?

I sure hope the turning of it I did to see if it was stuck has not caused damage....

Few ROUGH fiddles in the loungeroom, shitty shitty light.

1.
Focus hunts pretty rough in low-light (ISO3200, 2.8, 1/30th) on skin.
High contrast is fine, and quite snappy (pings in, 1 micro adjust, locks)

2.
Bokeh is pretty sexy

3.
Comes with 2 lens hoods.... full frame 35mm and APS-C.
Locked together and on the 5D, I can't see the hoods at all -- so I can make a cannon! woo.

i had a play with one of these yesterday. Amazeballs.

Kind of interesting. Largely expected results... but DSLR not toooooo far off.

speaking of d800 went to the joe mcnally seminar the other day. sponsored by nikon so there were d800, d800e, d4's to play with

being lazy and copying and pasting what i wrote on fb :p

also got to play with a d800 with a 200mm f2 (turns out it was the one he used later in the show) what a mean piece of kit! the d800 feels heaps more rounder than the d700 but in a good way. feels a little smaller too, everything seems a little bunched up, easier to access buttons/dials while in the viewfinder but could be bump proned when jostling in a media pit.
custom tallman and ringman finger buttons are closer to the grip and way easier to press, again, could be bad or good. all the other design tweaks like the reworked mode dial on top and angled shutter button all are perfect. the note of the shutter has also changed, its gone from that whip crack that i love to a slightly muffled smoother sound, thankfully still nothing like the pissy film wind on sound like canons :p


as for the seminar.... i forgot he was a ttl nut :p

it seem to suit low to moderate flash users ...and the 90% of the crowd that were old guys that looked like theyd tell you using flash is cheating lol. good coverage of the most commonly used equipment, types and usage plus a couple tangents.

didnt really learn anything technical but was cool to size my skills up against a veteran and get me thinking on how i can improve some of my processes. wouldve liked for him to go into more detail of cleaning up the shot and tweaking it but it was still a good seminar, only looked at my watch twice in the 4+ hours and they had ham and cheese croissants and scones with jam and cream

Half the noise crapping out of the Nikons is a servo driven lever to control prehistoric legacy lens technology.

Nikon just needs to get with the program.

im surprised how many ppl out there that are still like that. just because theyre small and run on batteries doesnt make them inferior, they do their job, they add light, but for me its portability. dont know where id be without them

nah, not even close to fisheye which is 180 degree field of view. 11mm is 104 degrees and rectilinear.

citiwide are grey. i bought some filters from them yonks ago & had no issues.

alot of ppl swear by citiwide, one of the few places i actually havent bought a lens from but theyre very well known

vilz - troy has that lens if you want to get him to send you some shots or tee up a play.

read the reviews, the tokina does kick alot of ass. i chose the tokina 12-24 f4 over the sigma cos i liked the feel and build quality better

doubt youd notice much diff. in dof with everyday use but in saying that i pretty much never shoot at f2.8 speshly with a wide angle.

read a few things and seems people like the tokina better
maybe i should walk into a shop and have a loook

edit: the shipping from citiwide was a lot more than i was expecting

Nice and sharp and wide enuff, without going to a full fisheye, dont really spend much time down in 2.8 so cant comment too much about that.. im sure it would be fine
