Open Records
Hey everyone,

Just thought I'd post up a thread about Open Records, the label my friend Ian & I run out of Cairns.

We've been quietly plugging for years, but have never had too much connecting with the InTheMix crowd... but I'm hanging around a bit more now, so I thought I'd finally post something up here!

Open started out prodominantly releasing progressive sounds, though if you've heard our stuff lately, I'm sure you'll agree this forum probably applies more now. We will continue to release some proggy grooves, though they will have a bit more of a techy edge.

While Open is run out of Cairns, we have a solid representation throughout Australia, both DJs and artists. Our Australian collaborating artists include (but not limited to): Gavin Martin, Paul Abad, Ed Motive, Woodsman, Eegor, Drewan, Blinky, Def Digital, Algenon, Waltone, FunkForm, Interpulse, SunControlSpecies, Sensient & yours truly.

Internationally we've got stuff by Gary Beck (out today!), Erphun, Matador, Fiord/Antix, King Unique, Boris Brejcha, SQL, Weekend Heroes, Perfect Stranger, Criss Source and adding more by the day. Our general idea is to create a platform for Australian artists by pairing them with well known internationals on remixes and attempt to raise not only their and the label's profile, but Australia's as a whole.

While we've endured a few highs and lows in our time - the collapse of two distributions including the fated Stomp being the latter - we've managed to come out the other side fighting and are now signed up to Press & Play out of Greece, the powerhouse behind labels like 1605, Sabotage, Code, Respekt and more. We're stoked to be on board with this solid new network and excited about our future ahead with some pretty tidy releases in the pipeline.

Both Ian and I are always keen to make new connections and hear new sounds, so if you've got a tune to send to us or even just wanna drop us a line, feel free to do so at info@open-records.net or in our dropbox on Soundcloud.

If you have been supporting us, we really do have to say thanks from the bottom of our hearts. It's a tough industry and we've managed to survive over the years thanks to your support and hard-earned dollars. Respect.

Thanks heaps! Primitive indeed is a rocker... was definitely the favourite from the Beatport crowd

Our newie, the remix EP of Matador's Faberge with Gary Beck, Waltone and Mitaka Remixes is just out... Beatport gave us some love and a featured release in techno this week as well. We've had some in Progressive House and Electronica, but stoked to notch one up in the techno. Pretty excited about the potential on this one, the Gary Beck in particular has been getting a bashing from names like Dave Seaman, Hernan Cattaneo, Stephan Bodzin, Nick Warren, Dyno, Mihalis Safras, Anthony Pappa, you name it... finger's crossed!

Click here to check it out at Beatport if you like

OPNDG018 // SUBFRACTAL // DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE // BLINKY REMIX

As the Northern Hemisphere batons down the hatches for a cold winter, the sun is shining in Australia and music fans from all walks of life and persuasions are gearing up for the busy summer festival season. This vibrant culture has always underpinned the Open Records sound and what we do, and what better way to celebrate it than a brand new CD compilation?

Depth Perception, compiled by Open Records label DJs Solatek and Paul Abad, is currently in the final stages of production, set for a release in early 2011. In anticipation of its release, we are proud to announce the first single from Depth Perception by Canadian artists Subfractal, aptly titled Down The Rabbit Hole. Deep, dark and brooding techno at its best, Down The Rabbit Hole showcases the talents of this talented duo, fresh from releases on labels like Respekt, Sleaze, Bosphorus Underground, Frequenza and Brood Audio.

Australia’s own Blinky provides the alternative, following from his staunch cut on Expansion Pack with Def Digital. Proving that progressive house isn’t the only genre he excels in, Blinky delivers a driving peaktime techno stormer that is sure to be a hit over this year’s Aussie summer. A wicked cut by Israeli artist Dima Gafner will follow on Depth Perception when its released in February. Open Records wishes all our supporters a safe and happy festive season, and hope this package gives you some well earned Christmas cheer!

Never in the city, although Paul Abad is active with his festival Earth Freq in the region and we've always got really strong representation there. SQL is headlining Earth Freq next year, you might get a nice surprise not long after too

Here is the link to Earth Freq: www.earthfreq.com ... full line-up details are there.

Open Records is proud to first release for the year, a wicked remix package of New Zealand masters Fiord’s Scratching The Sides. 2010 was a defining year in Open Records history, firmly establishing us as a name to watch on the international scene with a string of Beatport chart successes and strong support from Radio and DJs across the globe.

Our first showing in 2011 forms a link between Open Records’ biggest and most successful release yet, Expansion Pack, and our next full length compilation Depth Perception, released in February.

First up on remix duties is Germany’s Ryan Halifax, delivering a storming, bass-heavy rework. Selected by label DJs Paul Abad and Solatek to feature on Depth Perception, the track has already picked up some heavyweight supports and looks to be one of the big hits of the Aussie festival summer. Fellow countryman D-Nox puts it perfectly: “It’s really good... it has a flow. All the sounds are connected and make sense together. It’s got good drive and will definitely work on the floor. Very pumping!”

Rounding out the release is Israeli producer Sheff, with his deepest and most intelligent remix yet. With big support on his prior releases on Open, including names like Umek, Christian Cambas, Misstress Barbara and Piatto, Sheff is fast establishing himself as one of this year’s most exciting names in techno.

With plenty more big releases on the way, we look forward to an exciting year at Open Records and think this is the perfect way to get us started!

Fresh release out this week... pretty pumped on this one, all solid artists and great remixes!

Open Records notched up our 20th digital release this week and we’ve got a little something special up our sleeve to mark the occasion. Israeli artists MUTe are no strangers to the international dance scene, but have recently found a home for their more techno-infused productions here on Open Records. Signalling a strong direction for Open Records in 2011, this remix package of MUTe’s stunning track Modern Talk, originally released on Woodsman’s compilation Expansion Pack, counts itself as one of our most ambitious and innovative releases yet.

Continuing their long association with Open Records, New Zealand masters Fiord deliver the first remix, with a winding, space-age techno interpretation that is perfect for the sweaty backroom or festival alike. Descending into even deeper and darker territory is Ireland’s Matador, who follows up his stunning track Faberge on Open Records in 2010 (our highest selling digital release in history) with another pulsing techno monster that utilises MUTe’s original lead synth to great effect.

Closing out the release is minimal’s man of the moment Roy RosenfelD. With long runs at the top of the Beatport charts in both minimal and deep house, this Israeli producer can count himself as one of the hottest producers on the international scene in the new year and a welcome addition to the Open Records roster. A massive thanks from all the team at Open Records for following us for this far, and we look forward to delivering more quality music into 2011 and beyond.

New freshness coming on 04/04

After featuring his track Vintage Lovers Unite on our last compilation Expansion Pack, along with heading Down Under personally to help us launch the CD, Open Records have long been keen to work again with our good friend Avishay, aka A. BALTER.

Together with Perfect Stranger, A. Balter is one half of the team behind legendary label Digital Structures and one of Israel’s most respected DJs and artists. For our 21st digital release, Avishay delivers a pair of original works, showcasing two very different sides to his style.

WALLA is a dusty desert weapon, blistering in intensity and perfectly suited to the peak time floor. With its driving bassline punctuated by a rising melodic hook and sharp percussion rhythms, Walla is essential for any discerning techno DJ or lover.

On the flipside, RUBIK’S CUBE follows a different tangent, favouring a deeper, more pounding approach. Perfect for more twisted dancefloor moments, its dominating analogue lead and punching bass and kick lend themselves to both club and festival alike.

We hope you enjoy this latest release from A. Balter and Open Records. Stay tuned, as our next compilation DEPTH PERCEPTION, featuring Mark Henning, ANNA, Seph, Subfractal, Fiord, Closer Apart, Rex'n'Chappo (new Decoy project), Sensient, Waltone and a whole lot more, is just around the corner!

SUPPORT // Umek, Kasey Taylor, Re Dupre, Dandi & Ugo, Christian Cambas, Spartaque, Oliver Klein, Tom Novy, Marco Baily, Dubfire & more more!!!

After a release on prestigious Berlin label Varianz, Open Records is proud to present our first release from Rex’N’Chappo – a new project from two of Australia’s most talented musicians, composers and producers, Ian Chaplin and Philip Rex. Ian and Phillip’s pedigree is nothing short of stellar; playing on countless ARIA Award-winning albums for Jazz , alongside being part of two successful electronic music projects – progressive trance outfit Decoy who released albums on Dance’N’Dust and Iboga Records; and live jazz techno/house imprint The Imps with Sebastian Mullaert & Marcus Henriksson from Minilogue.

With this new identity comes not only a new name but a new approach to music – both from a production and live sense. When they take to the stage, it’s “live” in the true sense of the word, with a goal of never playing the same set twice. This not only creates a fun and interactive live experience for both Ian and Phillip, but also gives the dancefloor something unique to remember each and every time. As such, their singles are but snapshots of something much broader – but are no less impressive all the same.

Underpinned by a fat bass, Hurdy Gurdy’s bright pads, positive moods and evolving jazz influenced melody line make it perfect for those sunny festival moments – particularly when it drops! Flipping the script, Stop Sleeping’s low slung tech-house rhythms and washed out atmosphere makes it a more subtle but no less effective weapon.

Finally, the pulsing Train Spies closes the release out with its relentless rolling techno groove – bringing the end of this first offering on Open from this hot new Australian duo (but definitely not the last - stay tuned for Boobie Trap on Depth Perception soon). Enjoy it, coz these two old dogs are!

Been really stoked with the response Depth Perception is getting on Beatport - it's one of our most successful releases to date and it's only been out under two weeks!

Pretty stoked we have held down the No.2 highest selling Minimal release overall on Beatport for over a week now (as well as No.43 in the overall release chart regardless of genre), as well as three tracks still going up on the Minimal Top.100 singles. Mark Henning and Fiord have also charted the tracks too. Big respect to our label DJs Solatek and Paul Abad for putting together such a fine release, and all the artists and people who have contributed in some way or anyother.

And of course... massive thanks to everyone who's been supporting us so far on this one, we couldn't do what we do without you. We'e got a really busy few months in store and a majority of the music is from right here in Australia. We think it's going to turn a few heads around the globe!

Thanks for the support... really appreciate it! Was nice to see the release stay up there for so long - over three weeks and counting now. We've actually got some wicked remixes of the Henning coming soon... stay tuned

Couple of new EPs out recently... hope you enjoy them too.

Child's Goa EP is a stunning example of the Melbourne-based artist at his best, complimented perfectly by remix by Israeli masters Miki Litvak (remember Shnorkel anyone?) and Nir Shoshani...

CHECK IT AT BEATPORT HERE: http://www.beatport.com/release/goa/817671

Second up (and much more recently - it's still less than a week old) we have the first single from Melbourne artist Interpulse's debut album Eye On A Sphere. The all-Aussie affair also features remixes from fellow Melbournians SunControlSpecies and Rhythm Nectar, and I'm sure you'll all agree it's very tasty indeed...

CHECK IT AT BEATPORT HERE: http://www.beatport.com/release/buckle-up/817672

We hope you enjoy the tunes... stay tuned of news from Cairns artist FunkForm's debut full length EP Middleman next week!

Another week... another release... this time on the deep/tech-house tip, from Cairns producer FunkForm. We think this guy is one of the freshest new producers in Australia right now and think it's time everyone else found out about him too!

Loads been happening lately... I'm the first to admit I've been a bit swamped and have neglected this thread a bit... sorry ITM!

The big news for us is that we've been holding down the No.1 Release in Minimal on Beatport for the past week or so with Sensient's Buzz Kill EP... pretty chuffed! We've been charting a lot on Beatport lately, but this is definitely our first top spot.

Check out the tunes here...

We're also dropping a killer new techno EP from Melbourne artist Child on Monday, with a huge remix by Israeli stars Weekend Heroes. It's their darkest techno beast for a while, fans of Fear Factor will be stoked...

and finally... a free .wav download of "new school old school" turbo acid rave remix of Kuda by Child... enjoy!

Thanks to all those who've been supporting the little Aussie label that could... onwards and upwards! If you like any of the above tunes... hit us at Beatport here.

Loads more new tunes out at Open now... let us know your thoughts!

This first one from Melbourne artist Child, featuring Weekend Heroes remix, did great things for us on the Techno charts... No.8!

The next one just dropped this week... not much chance to chart yet, but we were hoping you could help with that!

Hope ya'll dig!

Fresh from the release of our new compilation series WIDE, Open Records is proud to announce our first EP for the year from US artists Terrakroma. Featuring two mind-bending techno originals from Californian collective, alongside a remix by Berlin-based artist Rebel HiFi, our 2013 kickoff is nothing short of a treat.

Huaska is Terrakroma at their twisted best. Mixing a relentless techno groove with winding atmospheres and chopped spiritual chants, this is pure journey music for dusty festival dancefloors.

Accept The Change keeps the tension high, with a spellbinding intro giving way to a haunting, pushing rhythm, spooky vibes and grinding leads. Finally, Berlin-based artist Bill Robin aka Rebel HiFi trades the Accept The Change’s frantic pace for more subliminal territory. Stripping the track back to its bare bones and injecting just the right amount of wobble, it’s a perfect end to a magnificent start to 2013 from Open Records.

TRACKLIST //
1. Terrakroma – Huaska (Original Mix)
2. Terrakroma – Accept The Change (Original Mix)
3. Terrakroma – Accept The Change (Bill Robin’s B’ak’tun Base 20 Mix)
