I'm updating my resume, and can't really ask anyone at work to be a referee, not because I'm a dud employee, I don't want them knowing I'm shopping around.

There are a few former employees I can ask, would that do the trick if I put their mobile number? Or do I really need someone on the inside?

Don't do that. Bite the bullet and tell your current boss that you're not happy and that you're looking elsewhere.

I never specify referees on my CV - "References available upon request"
Then I provide contact details to the potential employer if it reaches that stage.

I'm the same angelbel, but the same problem arises once you do need the actual references.
It's tough leaving a company but not being able to tell anyone so you can grab a reference.

I guess I've never been in the situation where I've been unable to obtain a reference from my current employer. I've always told them when I'm looking, why I'm looking and I've been able to maintain a positive relationship.
My thoughts would be that if you're leaving on bad terms, you wouldn't want them providing a reference anyway.
I also think that by the time you get to the stage of having to provide references, you should be at the point of advising your current employer anyway.

I'll go with the referees on demand route, still having a think about what to do from there.

I've worked for my boss for about 7 years now, I have a good working relationship with him, but as he's climbed the corporate management ladder (the company I worked for got taken over another company more than 10X the size about 2/3 years ago) he's lost touch with what it's like to be on our side of the fence. It's too political in our team to let management know I'm thinking of jumping ship, it's the sort of place where if they found out you were looking, they'd say 'we'll save you the trouble' and that'd be it. I guess once upon a time I could confidently say my boss had our best interests at heart, but not so much any more.

I recently decided not use my current supervisor as a referee, and during the interview for the job (I didn't get it )
they asked, and I replied honestly explaining they were almost never present, and could not provide an accurate reflection of my skills and career progression. They seemed to appreciate that

I do this too. "references available on request"
i usually speak to a close colleague or supervisor who can provide a reference.
but in the event you have no one in your current position, just give for previous positions. like past employers or past colleagues.

never give references straight up as the prospective employer may take you out of the equation early if they contact your references early. eg. cmay think you are not suitable without giving you a chance, just because the person who gave the reference was not a good reference.

I want to get into Software Testing. I have no degree in IT, I've just done a few introductory courses and have certification in 'foundation testing'.

I have applied for a few jobs here and there but most say they need atleast a year testing experience which I don't have.

I have tried getting exp in my current work that goes on about career growth all the time, but after some questioning they said they have no opportunities. What's my next move?

Flew back from the UK at the beginning of last week but the only decent night's sleep i've had was when I got completely rat arsed on the weekend ... other than that i'm lucky to get 1-2 hours in.

Jet lag has never lasted this long, anyone got any tips for insomnia? Resisting the urge to reach for the sleeping tablets but this is getting annoying now.

I've used Mulungu and Valerian in the past.... Mulungu worked best for me.

They sell both @ Happy High Herbs so stock up!

http://www.happyhighherbs.com/Products/Relaxation-Herbs

Both those herbs are sometimes referred to as "natures valium"... so probably not the best idea to mix with a lot of alcohol. I found a dark rum and ginger beer with lime mixes really nicely with it though. Just experiment till you find something which works best for you.

Fuck sleeping tablets. I'm not hippie but if you can find a natural alternative to synthetic meds, you should always investigate. Obviously I'm referring to things like sleeping tablets, anxiety, anti-depressants etc rather than things like diabetes, heart disease etc

I would be careful about including anxiety and depression in the first category. Medication isn't for everyone but on the other hand it's not something everyone should be fucking around with.

Just ordered some mulungu, have been trying valerian and it does fuck all for me.

Of course I'm not playing those conditions down or saying they aren't serious. Some people aren't suited to the natural alternatives but imo anxiety and depression aren't as clear cut as something like heart disease. Anything to do with the mind isn't clear cut really so whats the harm in exploring all options?

I'm the first person to criticise unproven natural remedies for physical illness but if there is something out there that might help the mind that isn't a pill with fuck knows what in it, it really should be explored.

Mulungu works better for me. How long have you been using Valerian? It can take a few weeks to take effect depending on your preparation method. Just keep researching different methods and experiment. One of the negatives of natural herbs is the prep can be a little fiddly sometimes. Worth it though to avoid synthetic drugs though imo

Also worth trying Passion Flower if you haven't already

Indeed - especial bearing in mind the side effects and rapid tolerance build up of the pharma solutions.
I also think with depression/insomnia they're things most of us go through at some point but aren't the full blown that others live with their entire lives, those are for whom the strong struggle is for.

Rapid tolerance and side effects are the worst, especially the withdrawals that you get off pharma meds. I''ve been on 200mg of desvenlafaxine for probably over 2 years now and that had the least amount of side effects, but still took a lot of time for my body to adjust to it. Though now if I miss it in the morning and take it later in the day I get mad withdrawal symptoms. I've been on a number of other anti-d's and definitely if there is a natural something that can assist i'd invest it that. Saves much $$ as well.
