Too bad the Wave forum has disappeared, that place has a wealth of information about rotaries.

Anyway, both the Bozak & Urei still sound great with digital sources, and even better with vinyl. But if your only playing digital and looking for better sound quality, perhaps look at the way you are ripping your vinyl. Upgrading your stylus/phono pre/sound card would yield greater results than upgrading your mixer

@ Underdog: Cool. You have an E&S? How does it compare to the other 2?

@ Papanikolas: Good point with the ripping. I have considered changing the sound card actually, but I think its something I might do after the mixer upgrade. My home set-up isnt bad by any means, but just runs through some KRKs, so its no audiophile spec either. I cant afford to start going mental, hence the E&S seeming the sensible option. A friend is putting Theo Parrish on at an event next month...I might have to try & worm my way in while theyre sound checking. I cant help but feel that my Empath seems really linier in comparison to say, the 2016 & even some f the older Vestax rotaries Ive used while gigging. My eye is already on some Sure White Labels

I don't own an E&S but have a couple of mates who do and have played several gigs on them - they really are a solid nice but of kit and great fun to mix on - I have a Rane 2016 plus the XP kit at home myself, if I had the cash spare I'd order an E &S in a heartbeat!

Re comparisons to the urei / bozak - I've only played on a bozak - but it wasn't a custom install so the legendary sound quality wasn't teally able to be fulfilled - layout wise it's pretty straightforward

I'm a big fan of the usability of the 2016, it's a very versatile mixer and the sound is clean, maybe without the nice distortion of the Bozak but versatility goes a long way when using a mixer these days as we aren't just using 2 turntables and a microphone like when i was a youngsta!

Heres some pics of the first mixer, its got 4 channels, 2 of them are dedicated phono channels, the other 2 are CD/line inputs with a switchable A/B input. it has an FX loop for an Isolator. It also has a separate booth and master out. Im getting a very warm full sound, sooth fades too from the Alps RK27 channel pots.

The XLRs are not Balanced (for home use), but if its going to be used in a Club install I have balancing transformers to make the XLRs fully balanced!

Very slick indeed! Id be really interested in seeing what the desktop looks like when complete

Is there space within the unit to cater for 3 phono/4 line inputs? & What kinda price are we looking at for these?

Unbalanced is perfect no need to balance it even in a lot of clubs, just depends on the installer and the way the system is designed!

looks tidy!
Did you custom the faceplate and back panel too?
I'm curious as the circut board looks like it's done in mass produce.
Not single custom with etchplate, done at home.

And if I may be a little picky, the toggle switches seem a little to close to the rotary knobs. Might risk flicking the channel as you dial.

But otherwise, great home project! kinda jealous.
Have you checked out Marsh Media recently?

Looks great.

Nice to see that you actually built your Bozak clone.

But do you use a switched-mode computer PSU for it ?

From ebay:
"The PSU is an external laptop style unit, it automatically switches to overseas mains voltages and outputs 48v dc."

Yes Pern,
I have used a 48v switch mode PSU, its heavily filtered and complies with EC safety regulations. I can build a fully linear transformer based PSU as well if asked.

Ok,

Great that you will offer a "normal" PSU also, but i do understand why you use the current one.
The PCB looks nice but a little large :-)

Think your mixer is great option for anyone thinking of getting a Bozak AR-6 .

Pern,
This is my first draft of the PCB, so its spaced out nicely, I wanted to make shire all the audio paths were not in danger from cross talk. I have already drafted another smaller PCB. But this lager one works perfectly.
I also use the Switch mode PSU for it electrical safety (no end user will get electrocuted from this psu), as I said its heavily filtered and then its voltage is regulated again inside the mixer, Theres no 50hz ripple. At unity gain in getting a -80db noise figure (I'm happy with that, It beats the Bozak by 10db), also this mixer with its PSU can be plugged in anywhere in the world and it will work perfectly, I think thats a pretty convincing argument.
Thanks Mehdi.

As you say, with a lot of filtering and regulators that PSU should work just fine in most installations.

Just one thing i noticed in your ebay-text:

"there is no negative feedback in the audio circuit"

If you haven't changed the original schematics you do have that in the summing amp. This is a classic inverting SRPP design.

Pern,
I sense a certain hostility in your tone, don't be jealous we can both make good quality mixers, its a big world out there. I have not hijacked or made any negative comments on any of your threads, there are many comments I could make, but it does not bother me.
Good luck to you and you endeavours, I'm gonna keep going with mine and I have more to come.
Thanks but I don't need your technical know how, you don't have to prove anything here, I got my own thing and i'm proud of it!
Lets move forward to a place where we can all work together, not fight over who's spent more time at university, LOL.

djmehdi,

"I sense a certain hostility in your tone", I'm really sorry if you did that. That was not my intention and if you read my posts on other forum you should know that i never do that, i always try to help others if i can.

I think what you are doing is great, i just wanted to share some of the knowledge/information i have about the Bozak mixer since i spent a lot of time doing different prototypes/modifications and a lot of SPICE simulation of it. Information that i thought might be helpful to you in the future. I think that since there are so few that do stuff like you and me we all gain by helping each other.

But i respect what you say and will not post any more about your mixerproject here.

I don't think Pern was trying to start anything it was a bit aggressive but i think it was just a unintentional tone, neither of you are prone to throwing punches unlike a lot of people on this forum!

I think all this information will help the next generation get interested in Hi Quality DJ gear and not just the Behringer, Pioneer, Numark world we live in!

It amazes me that I've never seen that one before, Pretty sure it's not the DFA mixer as i should of heard!
Interesting how the warranty is only valid for EC residence, not too sure what that's about!

I'll have to ask around and see who's making it!

The whole EC warranty may be because of the power supply being 240v only or because it looks hand made (like mine), the maker may not be able to afford the costs to service a warranty repair any further than Europe. I have had some requests fro a 2 Channel version for my mixer, its in the pipeline.

Yeah your right, in the old days we had the same issues with Urei and Rane!

2 channel version would probably sell well mate, most home setups would work with a 2 channel!

Maybe i'll sell one of the Bozaks on eBay and buy your mixer!!! it is the original, might be a collectors item when you design the first DJ mixer to go to Mars!!!!

A 2 channel, desktop option is very interesting. I'm not in the market for a mixer although seeing how your first mixer turned out, a 2 channel compact design might make me look at selling my urei 1620le.

I look forward to seeing how it all goes.
