Yeah, start of the show with the 'previously on Mad Men...' I was like 'fuck, it's a show about Pete, boring!' but it was actually damn good, yet again! Can't believe we waited so long and boom, it's 8 eipsodes in already, only 5 eps to go!

Always liked Lane, he was a nice character addition to offset the residents

Finale felt a little lacklustre after the way this season has been going, some bloody funny moments though

Finale was definitely not a big event, but you could say that's true to Man Men's understated style. Undoubtedly a bunch of more interesting stuff to follow on next season.

. Oddly, I'm watching a double Marylin Monroe feature on SBS or ABC at the mo, and it is absolutely striking how much Joan is Marylin in every physical sense. Crazy similar (red hair aside). The only main difference is attitude - Joan is confidence, sly cat calmness whereas MM is just cool, coy, innocent. Sign of the times I suppose, which is strange in itself, - Marlyin exudes the innocence of her time, "Joan" is a hard bitch of our gen, playing a Marylin of that time.

I was too stoned the first time I watched it to notice but I love the scene of Don and Lydia right near the end and how it ties together Don's reading of Dante in the opening of the episode. It shows that not only have Don and Lydia been together a while, it is implied that she is like the female version of Don also: when she replies to his, "To stop doing this," with "I know," it's flipping awesome.

i like the link they've been extapolating between don's ability to feel emotion and his success as an advertiser. last season, when he was clearly in love with his new wife, he couldn't connect with the mind of the consumer and the business struggled. but previously, when he was a real shell of a person (no compassion, no love), his emotional disassociation allowed him to engage with consumer desires and the business thrived.

i think the finale from last season and the pilot from this one showed a return of this pattern of behaviour. will be interesting to see where it pans out.

The awkward hug from Joan was hilarious. What the fuck was that pedo looking guy from the insurance company going on about? Has he been in the show before?

I just don't get Pete. Or maybe it's that he epitomises the maxim about the duality of man. He treats women worse than Don does, with a lack of sincerity and thoughtfulness and kindness (which Don, as big a cocksman as he is, doesn't lack: in fact he seems to have a genuine care and affection for the women he keeps betraying), yet then Pete goes into an impassioned, incandescent rage over Harry's brainfart about loss of revenue and disrespect for such a humbling moment in American history, the assassination of MLK.

And Don, he's entering the realm of pathetic old geezer Don Juan mode. Yet he is becoming more and more lost as he drills down, descending into the labyrinthine maze of his psyche, and becoming both embittered in the process yet strangely becoming more proprietorial over his mistress Sylvia, a woman who previously had told him, while in the coital act, that she prayed for him that he would find peace.

Then there are the two hugs given by two of the show's main female protagonists towards African-American female staff: Joan's coming across as awkward and insincere, Peggy's coming across as awkward and sincere.

I don't know where this show is heading but it's fascinating, to an almost voyeuristic level, to watch.

Well said, Geezah! Latest ep was amazing! Though I thought Peggy's hug was pretty sincere and not awkward at all, Joans was hilarious!

But ugh, the final scene with Don and Megan, wow, talk about getting chills! Will re-watch that soon...best scripted show on TV...possibly ever...the way nothing but everything happens at the same time, if you get my drift...it's brilliant!

Pete's rant

This is the one show I love reading recaps for because there's so much hidden meaning that most of the time I miss. It's a High School English teacher's dream!

The Age (SMH in Sydney) does a really good one, so does IGN.

Pete basically personifies frustration. He keeps seeing things he wants and thinks that he's 'owed' them - he deserved to be a partner, like Don. He deserves mistresses, like Don - and a flat in the city. He keeps on seeing the next 'step' as something he thinks he should take, not understanding that it's not always a trapping of success and that Don isn't someone to emulate.

He doesn't know what he wants and so seizes on whatever is happening around and above him as the next 'thing' to want - and then never understands why people react to him in such a negative fashion

when/how are they going to really tie Don's ex missus back into the 'main' part of the show. They keep showing her relationship with her new husband and the kids are going their (weird) ways, but I'm wondering what big event happens that either brings them back or cuts her out entirely.
