i'm not much of one for hyperbole, but i think i've stumbled across what may very well be the best pvd set ever recorded.

now, i must qualify that i've not listened to a new pvd set since 2005, but from all accounts he's no longer the same, so it shouldn't really matter.

this is a high quality, three hour recording from what seems to be a dutch party in late 1997. i can't vouch for the accuracy of the year, however (it could be early 1998 ). in any case, the tracklisting is very 97/98ish, so it is most definitely circa that specific era.

the entire three hours is an unrelenting mix of typical punchy pvd tracks (think disc 1 of vorsprung dyk technik), many of which appear to be his own re-edits that i've never heard before, proto-eurotrance, a few 97 era classics, and some almost goa-esque harder tracks. there's a handful of slightly weirder fillers, but these clearly must have been played only to settle things down a bit.

i've been searching out late 90s pvd mixes for some time cos i was invariably disappointed with his offerings from 2000 onwards (i'm a fan from way back, despite not following his current efforts). my appreciation for him stemmed nearly entirely from what he made and how he played prior to the millenium- everything subsequent never really seemed to recapture the energy and emotion of before and during the 97-99 gatecrasher era.

anyway, these late 90s sets (especially from 97 and 98 ) were always incredibly difficult to source. I knew they were around, but back then because of their rarity (coupled with my dial-up internet) it was near impossible to obtain them. I recently randomly stumbled across a gold mine on djmixes, with scores of recordings like this shared. so you can imagine my glee....

there's no tracklist but some highlights include:

malcolm maclaren - the bell song (one of the best tracks of the time)
a re-edit of his binary finary 1998 remix which simply has to be heard to be believed
(will add more later with times)


i invite you to have a listen and post comments. Maybe it will sound really dated to all you new kids, but in my opinion, some 11 years later, it still stands out. This is a glimpse of why he became one of the biggest djs in the world, before he really solidified his reputation as a commercial global superstar.

Came across this setlist from tranceaddict's tracklisting forum. It's pretty spot on with what you explained in terms of what part of the year it was recorded/3 hour set. Hopefully it helps out though, Paul's 90's era is phenomenal!

I think my fav of his was Live @ The Eau - 22 February 2000. Would love to find a copy of this again. The CD I had it on died. Track 30 onwards... phwoar, what a finish!

it could also be oakenfold and osborne, they had stuff with this sound too at the time.

Listening to it now, great set. Its amazing how much cleaner his transitions sound now tho. Ableton makes things nice an easy doesnt it.

Yes, I too miss the transitions between vinyl and vinyl. Yet, there are things you can only performe Live!

This set is insane, one of the only old trance sets from pvd i bothered to keep on my laptop. Reminds you how good he used to be once upon a time.

Listening to his pre 1999 stuff aint too bad. But not the be all and end off of his awesome career. Now that I've thought about it, even his Cream Amnesia 2004 closing party went off

To his credit though he played the 3 different remixes of Tell Me Why. First time I heard that track was on Bexta's first Mixology before I fully understood trance.
