These guys are killing it. Brewdog might be the media darling with the gimmicks and the one getting the distribution, but if you can hunt it down, just grab it, no matter which style.

not really. Brewdog is seen by many people (Harts, the Wheaty, NakedNed) as overhyped. Much better to get a fresher, better, more interesting beer from Australia or New Zealand (or California / Pacific West Coast) than a beer past its best from Scotland.

Stil, the afternoon I drank two growlers of brewdog hardcore IPA was one of the best, if not the bluriest, times of my life.

Brewdog is by no means bad - it's pretty good. It is just overhyped. Plenty of better beers out there.

Astro, I can't believe you are reading this thread. Must be killing you.

Tried the Mornington Brewery Witbier last weekend, very solid belgian wheat beer, plenty of flavour.

Think I might break my growler virginity and pop down to The Local's bottle store tonight

Cracked open a bottle of this yesterday, simply brilliant. It's really beyond beer in terms of flavour. It smells like bourbon and fig and toffee, it tastes like bourbon first up (more so than some commercial bourbons) and then you get hit with the coffee and fig and malts and even licorice - low carbonation, warms on the way down.

btw, the Reidel O glasses are great for beer

That's supposed to be pretty good, haven't tasted it yet. The Sierra Nevada is an American Barleywine, where the Firestone is an English-style barley wine.

American Barleywines are really hoppy and bitter, where the English ones are more into the malts and mouthfeel. I like both styles.

The Little Creatures Quiet American is due into the Hive Bar in Erko on Friday night apparently, looking forward to it....

Anzac Day was lubricated by Mildura's Mallee Bull (deliciously wintry and strong to boot) & Burleigh's 28 Pale Ale (a super crisp session beer)

just asked @NakedNed for the 411 on where in Adelaide it will be. I know the Wheaty will have it, but hopefully the cellars just down the road will.

on that topic, wandered in there yesterday (Melbourne St Cellars) for the first time in a couple of months. Bam. Their craft brew selection has exploded. Massive range of Belgian trippels and dubbels, Brooklyn brewery, Flying Dog, the full range of Hitachino and Baird, all the Mountain goat rare breeds, Feral, Bear Republic, Bridge Rd, Sierra Nevada etc. Picked up some more Hoptimum, some of the excellent Rare Breed Rye IPA, and a goodly section of Hitachino and Belgians.

This was quite nice, although not something I would drink everyday. It was weird in that it's so hoppy and bitter almost to the point of being too much (almost. not quite) but lacks the kind of body or heavyness that you get with a really strong IPA.

Just found out the independant bottle shop near my missus's house has pretty much the whole North Coast Brewing range, some Rogue, Bear Republic and Brooklyn Brewery, and all the interesting Sierra Nevada's (Very much enjoying the Ruthless Rye IPA). Fucking win, no more driving out to Leederville.

The end result of all this is that Red Seal Ale is my new favourite beer. So well balanced.

I tried out an Indian beer called Hayward 5000 the other week and it was pretty decent. Not to full on and was a good alternative to the tap beers. If you go to http://www.beerstore.com.au/ there are HEAPS of beers you can get delivered to try out. Sometimes you can even customize your own label for beers when they have the promo running.

Any recommendations for decent canned beers - off for a lads weekend which will involve several cases and a small fishing boat so will make housekeeping a bit easier!

Must be reasonably easy to get hold of in Sydney and not super exxy!

All suggestions so far have been Poor Blonde or VB - yuck.

You could try xxxx. Sure it is about 99% cat piss like VB and Blonde but it goes down like water. When ever I am playing beer pong or games of the like I normally buy carlton or tooheys. If you have a prefered tap club beer (carlton/vb/tooheys etc) you should be able to get it in cans.

You can get Squires in a can too. Where in Sydney, I have no idea.

Dan Murphy's has squires golden ale in a can. Apparently Becks and Heineken magnums as well. Most BWS's should have Heineken cans of the 330ml variety (they look mini, but hey it's the same volume as a bottle).

Best bet is to look for proper imported Japanese lagers like Kirin - always comes in a can. It's a great macro beer (stay away from the Aussie contract brewed version, disgusting).

Any decent large bottle shop like Dan's should have 3 or 4 UK ales in cans... Boddingtons, Guinness, etc.

BWS usually has a German pils called Oettinger in a can - much cheaper than Aussie shite and much tastier too.

I've also had no probs finding the James Squire Golden in a can, you can order it online too.

Bridge Road Brewers
Excise relief for all brewers, = benefit to small craft brewers http://t.co/dElELqLz

Quote:

Extending the microbreweries excise refund scheme

The Government will extend the current microbreweries excise refund scheme by increasing the maximum refund amount from $10,000 to $30,000 and removing the current production eligibility threshold of 30,000 litres of beer, with effect from 1 July 2012. The amendments will allow breweries to receive an excise refund of 60 per cent of excise paid, up to a maximum amount of $30,000 per financial year. They will also ensure that the refund does not penalise successful local breweries as they expand their production.

This measure is estimated to have a cost to revenue of $10.0 million over the forward estimates period.

I've found Boags Draught cans to be quite decent as well. I wish Dan Murphy's still sold the Asahi aluminium bottles, they were perfect for outdoors. If you search around online, there are beer shops that do sell IPA cans as well (Brewdog for example).

Went to Level33 in Singapore last night. World's highest microbrewery in terms of height in a building.

It's in the Marina / Financials district, so the place was full of corporates waving amex cards and talking about mergers etc., but the beer was decent and the view was phenomenal.

Couple of decent nights at the Wheaty in Adelaide.

Monday was Doctors Orders. The Doc came over from Sydney with his beers, including 3 small kegs of a one off / not available anywhere else in the universe smoked IPA called Synethesia.
It was served three ways (hand pump, on tap, and through the glasshopper with Ethiopian coffee). His new Plasma White IPA was also tapped.

Yesterday the Yeastie Boys came over from NZ. They spent the day brewing up in the hills (a new beer to be called Bruce, an English style lager) with Alastair from the Lobethal Bierhaus. The Yeastie boys are cool guys, mid 30s, one is the creative and the other the money guy. Again a lot of cool beers were put on tap :

Bye bye Badman
Rex Attitude through the glasshopper with wasabi and lime
Digital IPA
Pot Kettle Black
XeRRex
and the most popular beer at the GABS - the Gunnamatta (a earl grey tea smoked australian pale ale, with challenger hops)

oh, and the Feral Watermelon Warhead is off the hook, best 2.9% alcohol beer ever

down in margaret river this weekend... good to see some of the breweries busting out some more interesting beers like black IPAs and strong ales instead of the usual tasting paddle of: hefe/pilsner/kolsch/pale ale/porter. still had some pretty fucking average IPAs at a couple though

Speaking of cans, I got this last week:

Ok so it's more like a keg

But I fucked up the initiation process and it wasn't pouring very fast. Had to pop open the top to get any decent pour, but that has caused it to go flat
