Shed is fucking next level techno. His calibre of production reaches far further than Ben Sims. Shed releases a lot of material under Shed but also has a fair few releases under different aliases and a quite a few as unknown. He is a very prominent artist for Ostgut Ton which is probably one of the best house / techno labels.

Shed does house and techno very well, covers a wide range spectrum in terms of techno, wheres Sims is just banging 4/4 techno.... big room techno/industrial stuff. Sims might get more crowds to the gig as he has more exposure as a techno artist, but Shed is a bit more obscure and relatively unknown unless you actually follow him.

This is true and I really feel Shed's productions but if I had to pick between them for night of serious getting down action it would be Sims every time, the man knows how to rock the floor.

Fuck

I think Brisbane has some kind of Octave One curse... they are destined never to come here.

What's with techno artists charging so much money. Is it about the music or not?

It's such a shame but I'd imagine the logistics of O1 would be difficult and expensive. All that gear!

If VFTL wasn't announced I was considering going for either O1 or Shed.

Yeah, Hood is touring for TLOY but I've had the pleasure of seeing him twice so I don't necessarily need to see him again for awhile. Rather someone I haven't seen yet.

You are right. I'm sure Simon or Bucky will get around to making a thread (sooner rather than later I hope). But in the meantime for those not on Facebook etc.

Basic Soul Unit (Toronto)

Hot on the heels of our 4th birthday bash, White Rhino charges on with Toronto native Basic Soul Unit. With releases on Techno’s leading labels, Perlon and Creme Organization and a forthcoming EP on Boddikka’s Nonplus, you can expect finely crafted Detroit-style futurism with a little acid thrown in for good measure, raw textures plied with mind fucking filtered disco drones, hypnotic synth patterns, swirling jazz-trained keys and deep atmospherics. He effortlessly blends between Techno and House, smooth and rough, sexy and tough, with his eyes to the past and his ears to the future… This stuff lasts all night long.

Supported by Lone Pariah, Rikki Newton, Adam Swain, Walrii, Percy Miracles.

A bit of Basic Soul Unit background to get you into the mood for the gig.

SN Podcast 005: Basic Soul Unit

Quote:

We have a very special mix for you. This edition in our podcast series is by our August guest performer Stuart Li better known as Basic Soul Unit. Although Stuart in his BSU guise is famous for jacking dancefloor killers and mental workouts that utilize that classic dusty drum machine sound, his passion for music stems from a wider range of sounds that include latin rhythms, jazz tunes, funk, soul and melodic breaks. When we heard of his monthly Footprints night in Toronto, which he dedicates to playing music that influenced him and veers away from the traditional club sound, we immediately wanted to hear and share this other side of Stuart’s style. So here it is – an almost-hour-long sampling of music that inspires Basic Soul Unit. Get cozy with a hot drink and if you don’t have a fireplace this mix will help you stay warm in the freezing metropolis.

Tracklist:

Stanley Cowell – Travelin Man [Strata East]
Nathan Davis Quintet – Carmell’s Black Forest Waltz [SABA]
Tenorio Jr. – Nebulosa
Tania Maria – Para Chick [Barclay]
Norman Connors – Mother Of The Future [Buddah]
Eddie Kendricks – Date With The Rain [Tamla]
Alice Clark – Don’t You Care [Mainstream]
Jon Lucien – Do You Believe In Me [RCA]
Djavan – Nereci [EMI]
LOGG – Dancing Into The Stars [Salsoul]
Truth – Open Our Eyes (Marshall’s Elevated Dub) [Big Beat]
Fingers Inc – Mystery Of Dub [DJ International]
Millsart – Every Dog Has Its Day Vol 4 C1 [Axis]
Pharoah Sanders – Love Is Everywhere [Impulse]

What about The End in West End? From memory the White Rhino guys were going to put Levon Vincent on there. 100 person capacity, nice and intimate. Or, you could finally christen that new South's Leagues Club balcony provided it has been completed?

^^ Souths League Club isn't a bad idea. If you're really stuck for venue ideas that is.

People are quick to knock off a venue like a bowls club or sports club but if done right it's worked in places like Sydney. I was listening to the RA interview with Simon Caldwell and he said the parties they run at Marrickville (sp?) bowls club worked out so well they are still doing them there rather than at clubs where they were experiencing problems with the owners of the bar. It has allowed them to run the events the way they wanted it.

If you started the event at say, 8, I can't see why it wouldn't work.

South leagues club is great!

Mad Racket is that crew in Sydney...they have been doing that for ages with huge success. I believe the club is away from any residential space so they can crank it....this is really hard to find in Brisbane.
