They are (or have) opened a new manufacturing plant in North Carolina, so they certainly are driving world wide capacity. Good on em, they were the first people to commercially push the craft brew concept in the new world.

Toohey's actually make a beer that isn't utter horseshit?

Got on the Young's Special London Ale over the weekend. Really enjoyed it, similar in complexity to an IPA, but has it's own unique balance. Not familar with the British brews apart from Newcastle, got some other good rec's people?

Had a session on this stuff on Saturday (at The Union Hotel, Newtown). Fabulously quaffable.

My local managed to source a keg of Yeastie Boys Gunnamatta, which won the popular vote at Melbourne Beer Week. Brewed with Earl Grey tea instead of hops. Enjoying one now. It's definitely different. But delicious.

New Goat/Mikkeller Crossbreed Black Pepperberry IPA is fucking outstanding. Complex flavour, love the slight pepperish aftertaste and with a glorious creamy finish.

If it hadn't have been for this brewery, there would have been no craft beer revolution, no little creatures, in fact probably no Australian micro's doing interesting beer.

Great article, didn't realise the massive influence they have had. I have sadly not even had the Sierra Pale Ale. Until tonight. No question as to why it is a classic brew. So well balanced, rich in flavour and the floral notes are fantastic. Quite clear where Little Creatures got their ideas from now.

Little Creatures is no longer Australian - they've decided they'd rather be taken over by Japanese behemoth Lion.

Sad news indeed, their bottleshop did not last long at all. Looks like they will be doing a fire sale this weekend to clear the space.

So stone and wood is the only "bigger" craft beer that's still independently owned? what else is there?

with the exception of coopers.

Little world beverages aka little creatures had a 20% share in Stone and Wood, so surely that must now mean Lion Nathan has a 20% share in S&W seeings how LN now own 100% of LC

Depends where you draw the line at "bigger" I guess.

Burleigh Brewing & Mountain Goat still 100% Australian as far as I know.

of those, I would have thought Mountain Goat was the only one of any significant size.

Grand Ridge does a pretty decent volume. They've been sold in Dans for a long time now.

Burleigh Brewing is at least as big (in capacity and volume) as those two, they just don't sell much outside QLD / NNSW.

4 Pines has a pretty big output too these days. Not sure if they're 100% Australian though.

Broo.

Although their product is closer to carbonated horse urine than beer.

yeah they've certainly been growing a lot recently... for ages feral white was available everywhere but now hop hop is in major chain bottleshops and on top at a lot of different venues

i think they're building a big brewery in conjunction with nail brewing to expand production

The Mrs whisked me off to Manly last night, for a celebratory evening (work promotion).... I'd not been to Manly for ages and was blissfully unaware of the Murrays joint (http://murraysbrewingco.com.au/manly/manlyWelcome.php)

Good selection on tap and the tasting tray was good value.

The 2IPA is a tremendous drop. Not too keen on the Punch & Judy (bit like Tetleys) or the Grand Cru (flavours all over the shop). The Punk Monk was very drinkable and the Spartacus was full bodied and delicious - abv was a bit OTT though. The bar food was tidy too...

She then dragged me to the Four Pines venue... http://www.4pinesbeer.com.au/map

Great food (double cooked pork belly) and the Northern Brown was the beer of the night. Solid colour, strong flavours but not overpowering, like Newcastle Brown Ale. Highly recommended.

I was under the impression that Feral had some sort of association with Woolworths? Or do they have some kind of contractual arrangement where Feral brews all of their dog-piss Sail and Anchor branded shite?

^ How does that relate to the 1000IBU in terms of palate-death? Because that's borderline for me.
