i don't know if you purposely lined it up so it pivots on the edge, but that makes it for me

98% fluke.
I believe it pivots around N-S poles, and Manly is East.... so I faced rough South

Yeap stars will rotate around the celestial poles. The South celestial pole will be positioned n degrees above the south horizon where n is your latitude (as far as i recall anyway). Thus for Sydney it would be 33.8 degrees above the horizon.

There are some tricks to easily finding it in Aus. This is the easiest way

April 21 is pretty much the peak of the Lyrids Meteor shower. While this isn't the best shower, it is on a saturday night, only 5 days off the new moon.

As I still haven't got a decent shot of a shooting star I'm planning to head away from the lights somewhere and spend the night trying. Anyone want to come along?

interesting....looked fine on both monitors at home, but way darker at monitor at work, will have a play of the RAW later on

so now we're in the good half of the year for meteor showers, thought I'd stick this stuff here so I can find it easy again later:

July 28, 29 (Sat, Sun)- Southern Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower. The Delta Aquarids can produce about 20 meteors per hour at their peak. The shower usually peaks on July 28 & 29, but some meteors can also be seen from July 18 - August 18. The radiant point for this shower will be in the constellation Aquarius. The near first quarter moon will set shortly after midnight, leaving dark skies for what should be a good show. Best viewing is usually to the east after midnight.

August 12, 13 (Sun, Mon) - Perseids Meteor Shower. The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at their peak. The shower's peak usually occurs on August 13 & 14, but you may be able to see some meteors any time from July 23 - August 22. The radiant point for this shower will be in the constellation Perseus. The near last quarter moon will be hanging around for the show, but shouldn’t be too much of a problem for a shower with up to 60 meteors per hour. Find a location far from city lights and look to the northeast after midnight.

October 21, 22 (Sun, Mon)- Orionids Meteor Shower. The Orionids is an average shower producing about 20 meteors per hour at their peak. This shower usually peaks on the 21st, but it is highly irregular. A good show could be experienced on any morning from October 20 - 24, and some meteors may be seen any time from October 17 - 25. The first quarter moon will set by midnight, leaving a dark sky for what should be a good show. Best viewing will be to the east after midnight. Be sure to find a dark location far from city lights.

November 17, 18 (Sat, Sun)- Leonids Meteor Shower. The Leonids is one of the better meteor showers to observe, producing an average of 40 meteors per hour at their peak. The shower itself has a cyclic peak year every 33 years where hundreds of meteors can be seen each hour. The last of these occurred in 2001. The shower usually peaks on November 17 & 18, but you may see some meteors from November 13 - 20. The crescent moon will set early in the evening leaving dark skies for what should be an excellent show. Look for the shower radiating from the constellation Leo after midnight, and be sure to find a dark location for viewing.

December 13, 14 (Thurs, Fri) - Geminids Meteor Shower. Considered by many to be the best meteor shower in the heavens, the Geminids are known for producing up to 60 multicolored meteors per hour at their peak. The peak of the shower usually occurs around December 13 & 14, although some meteors should be visible from December 6 - 19. The radiant point for this shower will be in the constellation Gemini. This year the new moon will guarantee a dark sky for what should be an awesome show. Best viewing is usually to the east after midnight from a dark location.

well if it makes you feel better I spent most of the night freezing my butt off and didn't even see one let alone photo one. the one plus from it was it was the first time I've got set up so my camera's automatically taking pics every X sec, something I'll be playing around with more. I also heard from quantum, who's somewhere in WA atm that he did at least see heaps, but again, no pic.

was ^that just 1 exposure or you use the star trails ap?

that was about 150 shots and stacked - 30 secs, f/4 ISO 800

just a touch-up of white balance in Aperture afterwards and that's pretty much it

Here's one where the tree wasn't in focus - This is only a 30 shot stack as we were interrupted by some hicks who were ultra dodgy looking so we left before we were murdered

Who turns up to the middle of nowhere at 3 in the morning and starts building things with planks of wood at a 'lookout'

We left and found a different shot far away from weirdos, a pity as we saw probably 20 meteors in the 45 mins we stopped first but at the 2nd location we barely saw 10 (and we were there for hours)

i'd like to be old school and just do one exposure for star trails but i think that'd cause all sorts of exposure issues, I ended up using pretty much the same setting as you, seems to about the best option. the first of those 2 is the one I prefer, it's a bit sharper.

+1 for the getting hassled by strange people while out for that, I had a car of people drive up (never mind that they were way off road) to check out what I was doing, and ask what drugs I was on, cause of course you'd have to be on something to be out at 2am

not mine, sort of glad as according to this it took him 2 years to get the right conditions for it
