Not his output so much, just the amount of people fapping over him now. But there is an album coming....

And I still don't have Kinky Dudes or Well Done My Son on vinyl.

And I still don't have Kinky Dudes or Well Done My Son on vinyl.

I bought quite a bit of early shed/wax/eq'd on vinyl, including well done my son, and in the end I'm just not that impressed. Listen on a quality system and his production is pretty average. Actually a lot of the producers pumping out the releases are releasing some pretty poorly produced stuff. OK for churning through on the circuit I suppose, but nothing much worth collecting.

And on reflection I think most of his stuff is derivative, but he's not alone on that score either. I doubt any of this stuff will have much longevity. Which is fine if that's what you're looking for - it is what it is.

Didn't say it was, merely commented on something that I see.

As I said, looking forward to the album immensely.

btw Claude, I've played Kinky Dudes a lot over the years, as I own it digitally, and that shit kicks ass on any system. Totally disagree.

Ok, I don't have kinky dudes so I won't disagree. I stand by the my views on his production on tracks I have though. I have a very fussy system these days. It's changed my views on a few producers.

I really don't understand how you can come to this conclusion. René's more DJ tool orientated stuff (ie Wax, EQD etc) have some of the crispest production I have heard in techno in the last few years and sound superb on a quality system. Maybe you are referring more to the mastering quality of some of the vinyls you have?

His productions won't have longevity? You honestly think Shedding The Past is derivative and outdated?

Hey, it could be the vinyl, because that's all I have.

Shedding the Past is a really good album, some of it is definitely interesting, but there are some very strong 90s references in there (which I like).

I'm going to go home and play some again and see if I'm wrong.

See, and V-Tron basically though I was being serious.

If Shed had noticeably changed the direction of his music (like Voorn did) and essentially embraced a diluted form of electronic music that had existing mass appeal then you'd have a point joots*. I'd be the second guy behind you savaging him (out of sheer frustration).

This scenarios (if it is reality) is so different it isn't funny. Shed is just doing what he has always done and it must just be so fucking good that people cannot help but like it. If Shed is no good anymore then shut everything down, all of it. Basic Channel is shit, Detroit techno was never any good, the German rave scene was for pussies and late 80s early 90s Chicago house was a fad that was never going to last.

It is the one thing that stands out about Shed (not that he is the only one), he is one of the few guys influenced by the 90s whose music will seamlessly fit with what it was based on in 20 years from now. I suppose you could criticise him as being an imitator and not an innovator (I'd don't agree) but it would be irrelevant to the idea that somehow, something has changed because some young and enthusiastic EDM followers have caught on.

I think it just goes to show how far up their own arses Australian techno followers have become if they would seriously consider Shed's music to be anything less than it is purely because it has caught on with EDM's masses. I say Australia because I do not get the feeling that it is like this anywhere other than on ITM.

*this is the problem with opinions, objective quantification is ignored even though it is so goddamn obvious. It isn't a matter of opinion that Voorn's music changed and that he embraced that Manneheim shit that Nick Curly and everyone else was playing. It happened the moment he released the first of those tracks with titles based on household chores. It is a matter of opinion that the change in direction ended up with Voorn producing shit music. The thing is that at least here we can all agree that Voorn is no longer a techno producers arsehole.

On this basis I would challenge anyone to say that the Power House and EQD releases (being the most recent) have in any way departed from what Shed has always been doing. Whether you like them or whether you think they may be a little stale is irrelevant.

I suppose that "the Pretorian" is a change in direction but is it somehow making Shed more accessible to the Dirty Bird crowd. I think not.

Of course I never said I didn't love his music, I hope he only gets bigger and better doing what he does. I merely made an observation ;-)

Also, if he could just re-press Kinky Dudes.... it'd be great.

I think you'll find you're unnecessarily jumping down my throat here. If you could see my Shed collection, and realise how much he's influenced what I do, then you might understand why I feel protective, and hope he doesn't do a Voorn with all the success and the fapping.

Your rant is way off too. I love Shed but it annoys me how a lot of his followers (in Sydney anyway) lack a willingness to explore music on their own. There seems to be very little knowledge beyond current Berghain residents, pretty much everything they RAVE about has been mentioned on some trendy music blog.

My issue is with blog dj losers, not Shed.

Fine, you both got me.

But if you look at what has been posted there is a very clear undertone that Shed is becoming "less cool" because hipsters have jumped on board.

Don't worry, I've had to try and convince people in Brisbane about Shed but they still don't want to bring him up here. They'd rather have Ben Sims

I'm not even from Melbourne but I know that no techno should be at Brown Alley, period. Flown in for gigs many times to Melbourne and were at Brown Alley and been left disappointed every time by the sound and setup of the club. I know it's been clarified above that Shed won't be there which is great because if there are any acts I want to see held at BA, I'll have to sadly give a miss.

I understand that there may be club and venue politics in play but the quality of sound and room acoustics should never be compromised. I'm sure Melbourne has many other venues suitable for techno... what about Mercat basement? That Sandwell District night was epic!

Maybe the reason promoters don't want to bring Shed to QLD is because there is a good chance the'll lose money on it, Ben Sims on the other hand is more well known and to a small techno scene ala Brisbane that can mean the promoter might actually make their money back or at least come close to it.
